3. Server Administration
Your Server Administration section contains all important data and tools to manage your server. Server Administration Details In the Server Access Data section, click on the menu page items to display the data. Technical Data The technical and access data is valid for your server at the time of delivery or after your server has undergone re-imaging. Changes to passwords, e-mail addresses, or FTP user names are not reflected here. Your server has an IP address, to which all your domains are directed. The server name uniquely identifies your server in the 1&1 Data Centre. Use the server name and server password to access your server. The host status tells you if your server is ready for use.
Please note: 1&1 assigns a server password for use with many types of access. For security reasons, 1&1 strongly recommends that you change your password, the first time you use the tool.
Plesk Plesk is a web-based administration user interface for configuring your Root Server. The access information can be found in this section.

11
Server Access You can establish remote access with the SSH (Secure Shell) protocol and an SSH client (see Chapter 5: Remote Server Access with SSH). Use the access information provided in this section. File Transfer Options To transfer files safely and securely between your Windows client and your server, 1&1 recommends WinSCP. You can find a free version, with documentation, at http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/ or in the 1&1 Control Panel under Downloads. With WinSCP you can choose one of the following three protocols for accessing your server: SSH (Secure Shell) protocol, SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), or SCP (Secure Copy Protocol). You can also use WinSCP like an FTP program to upload files
FTP Warning Passwords and other data are not encrypted when transferring data via FTP.
Serial Console Log on to the serial console with this data and access your server, even if networking is down.

Recovery Tool Restart your server using your SSH access (see Chapter 5: Remote Server Access with SSH) with the command shutdown -r. If this is not successful, or if you are unable to restart the server any other way, in your 1&1 Control Panel go to Server Administration > Recovery Tool. Under Recovery Action, check the Reboot now box. Choose to boot from the hard drive or from a special rescue system. For more information on the rescue system consult the 1&1 FAQs at http://faq.1and1.co.uk. Click on Next. On the next page, check your choice and click on OK to initiate the reboot process. Rebooting will begin immediately. Reboot Warning If used inappropriately, these functions can crash your server and cause data loss. You cannot perform a reset if the server is switched off or shut down.
IP Address Overview You can order up to 8 additional IP addresses and apply an SSL certificate to each within your 1&1 Root Server package. As a publicly limited resource, each IP address must be used for a recognised purpose. A list of your IP addresses is accessible via Server Administration > IP Address Overview. If you have more than one domain name under one IP address, you can reverse map it to one of those domains.

Domains
Step 1
Click on Domains. In the table's toolbar, click on New. Check to see if the domain you want is available by typing it into the text field and clicking Check Domain. Please note: Your current web host will continue to bill you for your domain. A domain hosted elsewhere cannot be used as an included domain in your package.
Step 2
The system recognises that the domain is already registered. Based on your current web host and the type of domain, one or two options will appear at the bottom of the page. Select the option to point your domain to 1&1. Click on Next. This option allows you to use your packages web space and mail system with a domain registered elsewhere.
Step 3
On the next page choose your mail servers. Check the settings of your DNS pointing. If everything is correct, click on Order. Then ask your current registrar to change the DNS entries accordingly so that your domain name points to 1&1s domain name servers. Name Server Settings Ask your registrar to set up only and exactly the two 1&1 name servers named in the process. If you set up any other name servers or fail to use both, the situation could result in misdirected requests for your domain.

Domains
17
Pointing DNS to 1&1 After your current registrar has changed the name servers, it takes 24-48 hours for the information to propagate in the domain name system. In the meantime, we recommend that you upload your website to our web servers to avoid downtime. We check your domains current e-mail settings (MX records) to help avoid e-mail loss. Choose to switch to 1&1 mail servers right away or keep your old mail servers until the new name servers have been distributed in the DNS. Once this has happened, we will notify you by e-mail. Activate your domains e-mail addresses under Domains. Mark the box beside the domain and click on Edit DNS Settings under DNS in the toolbar. It takes up to 48 hours to propagate the new mail servers. During this time, check your e-mail accounts with your old provider and 1&1. Then cancel your email settings with the old provider and use your domain name with 1&1. You can also point your 1&1 domain to another provider if your web host supports this option.
Domain Contact Details (Reg-C, Admin-C, and Tech-C) For ownership and administration purposes, contact information must be provided for a domain name. In the registrant (reg-c) section, type in the person or company you are registering the domain for. In the administrative contact (admin-c) section, use the person responsible for administrative (non-technical) questions such as rights, changes of ownership, etc. Admin-c can be the same as reg-c or a representative of reg-c. All technical domain questions are directed at the person listed under tech-c. By default, 1&1 is the tech-c for your domain, but you can change this to any other person. To change one or more contacts for your domain name in the Control Panel, click on Domains and select the domain by marking the box beside it. In the overview table's toolbar click on the Contact arrow to open the drop-down menu. Select the contact details to be changed.
Advanced Domain Administration Advanced users can point name servers, MX records, or A records to an external web host, if your web host supports this option.

Mail Server Settings Upon delivery, your Root Server package is set up to use its mail server as the primary mail exchanger and the 1&1 mail server as the backup mail exchanger. You can change the MX records.. To use 1&1s mail system, please change the MX records under Domains. Mark the domain and click on DNS > Edit DNS Settings. Under Advanced DNS Settings, select 1&1 mail server. To use a different mail server, select the Other mail server option. Enter the mail server (MX record) details of the domain you would like to divert to your local domain.
Editing MX Records You cannot edit MX records if the domain has e-mail accounts in the 1&1 mail system. Delete these accounts prior to changing the MX records. Please note: 1&1 WebMail and other 1&1 mail features only work with the 1&1 mail server. If you change the MX records, they will no longer be available.
You can reverse these settings so that 1&1 WebMail is available again. However, because of the name server entries that have to be made, it can take a few days during the change is propagated throughout the DNS. The 1&1 mail server will ensure that no e-mail is lost during this time.

19
Step 1
Start your SSH client (e.g. OpenSSH or PuTTY).
Login Troubleshooting If your password is not recognised, check that PuTTY is set up to use SSH2. To see this setting, go to Connection > SSH > Auth.
Step 2
Enter the server name or IP address. Type in root, as the user name, and the password of your package. The log in information can be found under Server Administration > Server Data in the Technical Data section of your 1&1 Control Panel. Check that no characters are visible on your screen when entering your password (if the password shows, it will not be transmitted securely).
20
20
Step 3
1&1 strongly recommends that you change your password the first time you log in. To do this, type passwd after you have logged in. In the prompt lines which follow, enter and re-enter the password. Once you have changed your password, make a note of it on page 2. For more information on SSH consult http://faq.1and1.co.uk. Take Care of Your Password Make a note or memorise the new password you have chosen. In the event of losing your password, accessing your server even through the 1&1 technicians will be impossible.
Serial Console Using the serial console, you can still reach your server when the network is no longer available. This occurs when your firewall blocks access or your TCP/IP settings are configured incorrectly. Your serial consoles login information is under Server Administration > Server Access Data in the 1&1 Control Panel. Log in to the console server with SSH. Then log in to your server using your user name and password. For more information on Serial Console consult: http://faq.1and1.co.uk.

Setting Up Domains If a domain is in your Root Server package, it will be set up in Plesk together with your servers name. If you ordered a Root Server without domains, a dummy domain default-domain.com is set up in Plesk as an example. Plesk. To configure domains, click on a domain name. As server administrator, you can change all settings, but your clients may only do so within the range of permissions that you allow. Setting Up E-mail Use either the local mail server on your Root Server or the 1&1 mail system. Your servers default setting is the local mail setting. Chapter 4: Domains explains how to change this setting. To set up and maintain your own local mail system with Plesk or SSH smoothly, you should be well-experienced with DNS.
If you are using your servers mail system, you can use Plesk to configure your e-mail addresses. Plesk Online Help Click on Help in the left navigation bar of the program.
