Lubaba al-Kubra bint al-Harith ()لبابة بنت الحارث, also known as "Umm Fadl"
She is the mother of Abd-Allah ibn Abbas, and Fadl ibn Abbas , wife of
Abbas ibn Abd-Al-Muttalib the uncle of Prophet Mohamed (PBUH)
----- 2nd woman bcome muslim
----- bestfriend of khadija
They got married in the month of Shawwal in 7 AH, when the Prophet was 60
years old and she was 36 years old, just after the Muslims of Medina were
permitted to visit Mecca under the terms of the treaty of Hudaybiyya to
perform umra. Allah Almighty sent the following ayat about this:
“Any believing woman who dedicates herself to the Prophet if the Prophet
wishes to wed her, that is only for thee and not for the believers”. (Quran
33:50)
After Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) completed his Umrah rites, he went to Al-
Abbas and the marriage contract was completed ,al-Abbab presenting a
dowry of 400 hundred dirhams to her on behalf of the Messenger of Alah.
When the Messenger of Allah made the contract of marriage to her , he had
already spent 3 days in Makkah and according to the agreement made at al-
Hudaibiyyah, it was stipulated that the Messenger of Allah would return to
Al-Madina without performing Umrah that year, but that he would return
the following year to perform it, and he would remain in Makkah for 3 days.
So After 3 days, Quraish sent a message to the Messenger of Allah,
reminding him that he had completed the 3 days upon which they had agreed
and that it was now incumbent upon him to depart from Makkah. Upon he
Upon hearing this message, the Messenger of Allah said” What would it
matter to you if u left me to marry while I am among you and we would
prepare food for you and you would attend the celebration?”
But they said” We are not in need of your food, now depart from us.” So the
Messenger of Allah departed without having consummated his marriage to
Maymuna, however he left his slave, Abu Rafi behind so that he might bring
her to him, after she had prepared herself and he brought her to Sarif ( a
place which les some miles distant from Makkah )
He married her at Saraf, a place lying on his journey to Mecca for 'Umrah in
Zul Qa'dah 7 A.H. He had intended to start living with her when in Mecca
after performing 'Umrah but, as Qureysh did not allow him to enter Mecca,
he called her over to him in the same place on his return journey.
The relevant clause reads, literally, "if she offered herself as a gift (in
wahabat nafsaha) to [Muhammad]." Most of the classical commentators take
this to mean "without demanding or expecting a dowery (mahr)", which, as
far as ordinary Muslims are concerned, is an essential item in a marriage
agreement.
About her
1-Her piety
When She had reached adulthood before the migration of the Prophet
(pbuh) to Al-Madinah. Her pure soul was inclined towards Islam from her
earliest years.
This inclination was increased by her nearness to her sister, Lubabah- the
first woman to believe after Khadijah, but she was unable to openly announce
her conversion to Islam while she live in a house of disbelief.
As one of the mother of the believers, she is considered to be an excellent
example and role model, exemplifying true faith. She was known for her
piety ,purity, devotion (to worship), humbleness and her abstemiousness.
She devoted most of her time to her Lord, praying ,standing in prayer at
night and fasting.
Yazid bin Asam (R.A) says: “She was seen either engaged in Salaat or in
domestic work. When she was doing neither, she was busy in Miswak.
3-GENEROSITY AND GOOD NATURED3- Her generosity and good nature
She was known for her great generosity and her love and devotion to Allah.
4- She is truthful
She devoted her whole life to the worship of Allah, and whenever she saw
anything wrong she used to changed it with her own hands.
5- She is kind to her kith and kin
Aishah (R.A) says: “Maimoonah was the most pious, and the most mindful of
her kith and kin, among the Prophet Mohammad's (pbuh) wives.” Reported by
Al-Hakim
4/32
She was zealous in following the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) due to which,
whenever she was free from her housework or her devotions, she would
occupy it by using the Miswak ( a stick from the root of the Arak tree,
which is used as a tooth brush).
Yazeed bin al-Asamm spoke of this, saying” The Miswak of Maymuna, was
soaked in water, so if her work or prayer kept her occupied (she would leave
it there), but if not , she would take it and brush her teeth with it.”
She always kept in mind the fact that Allah was watching her in all her
deeds- both big and small; on one occasion, she espied a pomegranate seed on
the ground and she picked it up and said” Verily, Allah likes not corruption.”
9- She is one of the narrators of Hadith
a) “He (the Messenger of Allah) used to pray on a khumrah (a mat made from
date-palm leaves).” (Reported by Muslim and Ahmad)
b) “The Prophet (pbuh) was praying while I was sleeping at his side, then
when he prostrated, his garment touched me and I was in my menstrual
period.” (Reported by al-Bukhari)
Ibn Abbas said that one of the dua'ahs that the Prophet made during this
night was : "O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my tongue, light in my
hearing, light on my sight, light behind me, light in front of me, light on my
right, light on my left, light above me and light below me; place light in my
sinew, in my flesh, in my blood, in my hair and in my skin; place light in my
soul and make light abundant for me; make me light and grant me light."
Her Death
She asked to be buried where she had married the Prophet at Saraf and her
request was carried out.
She lived with Muhammad for only 3 years until his death. She died in 51 AH
( 673)at the age of 80. during the Caliphate of Yazeed bin Muawiyah bin Abi
Sufyan at Sarif (may Allah be pleased with her), This is a strange
coincidence that at a certain place during one Journey she is married, at the
same place on the return journey she starts living with the Prophet
Mohammad (pbuh) and at the very at the very place during another journey
she dies and is buried.
It is related that at the funeral of Maymuna, Ibn Abbas said, "This is the
wife of Allah's Messenger, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so
when you lift her bier, do not shake her or disturb her, but be gentle."
Ibn Abbas offered the funeral prayer over her and he ,Yazeed bin Al-
Asamm and Abdullah bin Shaddad bin Al-Had – who were her nephews –
entered her grave, along with Abdullah bin Al-Khawlani, who was an orphan in
her house.
May Allah be please with her.
