1. (a) Enumerate the various losses and methods to minimize them in a D.C. Ma-
chine.
(b) A 100KW, 500V shunt generator is running as a motor on no load at its rated
voltage and speed. The total current taken is 9.5A, including a shunt field
current of 2.5A. The resistance of the armature circuit at normal working
temperature is 0.1Ω. Calculate the efficiency of the generator at full load and
at half full load. [6+10]

2. (a) ) Explain the significance of back emf in a d.c. motor and explain how it
controls the value of armature current in d.c. motor?
(b) Deduce the condition for maximum efficiency for a D.C. Motor?
(c) The resistance of the armature circuit of a 250V DC shunt motor is 0.3Ω and
its full load speed is 1000rpm. Calculate the resistance required in series with
the armature to reduce the speed with the full load torque to 800rpm. The full
load armature current being 50A. If the load torque is then halved, at what
speed will the motor run? The armature reaction effect is to be neglected.

3. (a) Draw explain the phasor diagram of transformer under load condition
(b) The primary winding of a 50 HZ single phase transformer has 480 turns and
is fed from 5400 V supply The secondary winding has 20 turns. Find the peak
value of flux in the core and the secondary Voltage. [8+8]

4. (a) Determine the efficiency of a 150 KVA transformer at 50% full load and 0.8
power factor lag if the copper loss at full load is 1600 Watts and iron loss is
1400 Watts.
(b) Draw the no load and full load phasor diagrams of a transformer. [8+8]

5. (a) Explain the constructional features of a 3-phase slip ring and squirrel cage
Induction Motors. Bring out the merits and demerits of each.
(b) A 3-phase star connected Induction motor has 55V across its slip rings on open
circuit when normal stator voltage is applied. The rotor is star connected and
has impedance (0.7+j5)Ω per phase. Find the rotor current when the machine

i. at stand still with the slip rings connected to a star connected starter with
a phase impedance of (5+j4)Ω and
ii. (ii) running normally with 4% slip. [10+6]

6. (a) Explain the constructional features of alternator.

1. (a) A D.C. machine fails to excite. List the various causes for this phenomenon.
(b) What is the critical field resistance of the shunt generator and what is its
significance?
(c) A 4 pole shunt generator with lap connected armature having field and arma-
ture resistances of 50Ω and 0.1Ω respectively supplies 60, 100V, 40W lamps.
Calculate the total armature current, the current per armature path, and the
generated e.m.f. Allow a constant drop of 1V/brush. [6+4+6]

2. (a) Explain the speed load characteristics of a D.C. shunt motor and explain its
applications [8+8]
(b) A 240V Series motor takes 40A when giving its rated output at 1500 rpm.
Its resistance is 0.3Ω . Find what resistance must be added to obtain rated
torque (i) starting, (ii) at 1000 rpm.

1. (a) Clearly explain the process of building up of EMF in a self excited generator.
(b) Discuss the applications of shunt, series and compound generator considering
their load characteristics. [8+8]

2. (a) How torque is developed in a DC motor, Explain with neat diagram and derive
an expression for torque developed in DC motor.
(b) A Series motor takes 20A at 400V to drive a fan at 200r.p.m. Its resistance
is 1Ω If the torque required to drive the fan varies as the square of the speed,
find the necessary applied voltage and current to drive the fan at 300 r.p.m

3. Explain the working of a transformer at no load and full load conditions with neat
diagrams. [16]

4. (a) State and prove the condition for maximum efficiency of a transformer.
(b) A 30 KVA single phase transformer has an iron loss of 457 watts and copper
loss of 125 watts when delivering half the full load. At what percentage of full
load will the transformer have maximum efficiency. [8+8]

5. (a) Show that when a 3-phase supply is given to the stator winding of Induc-
tion Motor, it produces a rotating magnetic field of constant magnitude and
rotating at synchronous speed.
(b) Briefly explain the working of star-delta starter used for starting 3-phase In-
duction Motor. [10+6]

6. (a) In general, the field winding of an 3-phase alternator is a rotating element and
the armature is stationary. Give reasons.
(b) A 3-phase, star-connected alternator has the following data: Voltage required
to be generated on open-circuit = 4000 V at 50-Hz; speed = 750 r.p.m.; stator
slots/pole/phase = 3; conductors/slot=12. Calculate:
i. Number of poles and
ii. Useful flux/pole.Assume all conductors per phase to be connected in series
and coil to be full pitch. [6+10]

1. (a) The armature of a 6-pole D.C. generator has a wave winding containing 650
conductors. Calculate the generated e.m.f. when the flux/pole is 0.055Wb
and the speed is 300rpm.Calculate the speed at which the armature must be
driven to generate an e.m.f. of 550V if the flux/pole is reduced to 0.05Wb.
(b) A DC series generator, having an external characteristic which is a straight line
through zero to 50V at 200A is connected as a booster between a station bus-
bar and a feeder of 0.3Ω resistance. Calculate the voltage difference between
the station bus-bar and the far end of the feeder at a current of (i) 200A and
(ii) 50A [4+2+10]

2. (a) Draw the characteristic curves of DC shunt and series motors. Use these curves
to explain the applications for which these motors were used. [16]
