News clipping
And so thus how St. John the Evangelist
Church began. On September 16, 1956, a
small community of 46 families gathered in
the chapel of Rubidoux Mortuary for their
first Mass. The celebrant was Reverend
Michael Flynn – the first pastor appointed
Msgr. M. Flynn
Soon the house was too small. By itself, the community has grown.
But with its boundaries set as a parish between St. Francis de Sales in
downtown Riverside and Sacred Heart in Glenn Avon, its increased
growth was imminent. It needed a larger building for community
worship. Within a year, St. John’s Church was built. In December 1957,
it was dedicated as a new church at a Mass by Bishop Charles Francis
Buddy from San Diego.
The exterior of the new St. John’s Catholic Church shows the beauty of the recently completed wing
The interior has not yet been completely finished. and dedication ceremonies have not yet taken place.

The vision of a parish school also surfaced. It became a reality after four years. In June
1962, St. John the Evangelist Elementary School opened with Dominican Sisters given charge
to teach and administrate. Due to rising costs, however, the school only ran for a decade.
Today, the school’s classrooms are used for Catechism classes and meetings of various parish
ministries and activities.

A 100% growth rate marked Father Flynn’s eight years of stewardship. When he left in
June 1964 to fulfill his new assigned task to pastor a new paris h in Lakeside, he gave his
blessings to a church and school of 400 families, 46 of whom formed part of his legacy as the
true founders of St. John.

Celebrating its Silver Jubilee in September 1982, St. John’s community can look back to
five pastors who served them and the community as well of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Mission in Belltown. Built in 1927, this mission church has been and still is under St. John’s
pastoral care.
These five pastors who succeeded Fr. Flynn were Fr. Fox (1964-1969), Fr. Slattery (1969-1973),
Fr. Gorman (1973-1974), Fr. Timlin (1979-1982), and Monsignor Cronin (1982-1991).

F rom 2003 to the present, the pastoral care of our parish is managed by the order of
the Missionary Servants of the Word headed by Fr. Genaro Zavala and assisted
by Fr. Benito Roxas. Throughout their pastoral tenure, many Sisters from the same order
also have come and gone to assist with parish evangelizations and activities.
We have seen Sisters Marina, Patricia and Reyna as the first batch to course the
evangelization mission through Bible studies. As these sisters transferred to Los Angeles
to continue with their mission, a second batch came in the persons of Sister Mariana and
Sister Eva. Within months, Sister Mariana joined the Sisters in Los Angeles, leaving Sister
Eva who, until recently was joined by a new sister from Boston, Sister Maria Elena. To
increase knowledge of the Catholic faith within our communities, both Sisters Eva and
Maria Elena now handle spiritual retreats, manage the formation of men and women trying
to discern their calling, supervise the home-to-home visits within the community and
magazine sales within and outside the diocese.
BIBLE STUDIES FORMATION OF MEN & WOMEN
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, the Future Filled with Hope.
“To evangelize and to catechize is the call to awaken, nurture, and develop the hunger for God
in one another and to journey with each other as we grow in our relationship with God as
Catholic Christians ”.
Our Religious Education and Faith Formation programs incorporate all diocesan guideline,
policies and procedures. Catechesis for children and youth from first grade through high school
include varied programs to fit the needs of our diverse community. Our religious formation
programs basically follow a traditional model of once a week formation.
Children in the English setting are using bilingual curriculum that enables the child to read and
learn in the language they feel most comfortable in and at the same time their parents see the
same material in Spanish if they are monolingual Spanish speaking, which enables families to
experience faith formation together.
The RCIA model for the Youth Confirmation journey/instruction is being used. Youth
confirmation has transitioned to a once a month gathering. It is now an alliance of youth and
their parents/sponsors, all seeking a greater knowledge of their faith. They start with scripture,
prayer and reflection.
Parishioners who desire to minister in Catechesis are encouraged to prepare for this ministry
through regularly planned retreats, bible study and diocesan sponsored programs.
Catecheses for families who have physically and/or mentally challenged children are
encouraged to place their children in the traditional classes where we offer any extra assistance
that they may need. However we find most prefer to take part in the Family Catechesis
program.
.
Religious Education offers on going programs in the summer such as; Vacation Bible School,
as well as formation for the families who enrolled late in the year and need time to finish the
course of study.
The area of concerns at the present time is finding a better way to meet the needs of the English
speaking youth, in addition to their catechetical process, following the diocesan model of youth
ministry.

St. John the Evangelist is an active parish with many opportunities to share parishioner's
time and talent. St. John’s strives to be an inclusive parish community that invites, welcomes,
and affirms diversity as an essential component of welcoming, nurturing and encouraging
persons of all cultures into our community life and allowing us to be challenged by one another.
It is the community of young and old -- a creative combination of people from different races
and classes, from different nationalities and ethnic groups, with different cultures, traditions and
spirituality. Our community's vitality depends on the stewardships of our parishioners in
witnessing our faith in the Gospel through networking with civic and ecumenical communities
and by reaching out to the marginalized, alienated and the unchurched. It continues to create
renewal opportunities for all peoples in the parish. Parishioners build their spirituality and
stewardship by making changes needed in order to grow and have a greater impact on
community life and outreach to the larger community through the many ministries and special
programs of the parish.
Parish Ministries:
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of
service but the same God. There are different kinds of working, but the same God
works all of them in all people. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for the common good." (I Corinthians 12)
Lectors
Its members are parishioners who volunteer and train to read the Sacred Scriptures at Mass and
other liturgical celebrations.
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, the Future Filled with Hope.
Hospitality
This ministry has men and women serving as ushers and greeters at the liturgies on
Saturdays and Sundays of each week. Just as Christ welcomes all to His house, so does each
member of this ministry welcomes all who enter the church to join others in worship.
Filipino Ministry
The Filipino Ministry binds the Filipino community in St. John with the much larger group
within the diocese. This networking ministry helps its members become fully participating in
all aspects of spirituality within the community and the diocese.
Baptism Ministry
The Baptism Ministry conducts Baptism classes in English and Spanish to prepare parents and
sponsors to embrace the sacrament’s full meaning and responsibilities that come with it.
Parish Council
The Parish Council composed of all the group ministry leaders. This group meets regularly to
discuss short and long-range plans to improve church facilities and services with strong
emphasis on building and heightening community fellowship and spirit.
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, the Future Filled wth Hope.
Finance Council
Appointed parishioners volunteer their expertise in planning and supervising the financial
management and resources of the parish.
Liturgy Committee
Gives careful thought in planning liturgies and preparing the church for Mass celebrations and
other major feasts and festivities and civil holidays.
Youth Group
Young people come from grades eight through twelve constitute this group. They gather every
week to join in fun for friendship and service, and share and grow together in the practice of our
Catholic faith.
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, The Future Filled with Hope.
Cursillo
The Cursillo Ministry consists of men and women who made the Cursillo journey to
Christianity and are in continuous journey by meeting through their “ultreyas” every other
Thursday of the month
Legion Of Mary
The Legion Of Mary whose members are an extension of an apostolic organization in the
Catholic Church. Acting as a right arm to the pastor, the group meets 7:00 p.m. every Thursday
to pray and discuss their works which includes door-to-door evangelization, home visitations,
home enthronements, marriage validations, rosary devotions, and recruitments for baptism,
confirmation and cathechism instructions.
Guadalupanos
The Guadalupanos who represent the Spanish population. This ministry is fully active in
spirituality and contributes much of its members’ time and talents in various fund raising
activities for the church.
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, the Future Filled with Hope.
Quinceañeras
This ministry takes charge of conducting classes to prepare 15-year-old girls in their debut from
childhood to adulthood before the church and society in a rite of passage known as the
“quinceanera”. This tradition is highly valued among Hispanics as the most important and
memorable event in a girl’s life.
Volunteers Picnic:
Overall, these 18 ministries best sum St; John’s composition and administration of gifts guided by
the grace of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the blessings of the Ho ly Spirit. Through these grace
and blessings, the wide and diverse members of the parish come together in love and prayer,
continuing as a community on an eternal journey of discipleship to earn God’s promise of eternal
life in the place reserved for each one of us in His Heavenly Kingdom.
Built with Love, Strengthened in Faith, the Future Filled with Hope.
The love of Christ has been evident in our parish from the beginning: the love that
motivated a rich person to contribute thousands is the same love that encouraged a poor person
to give his last few dollars toward the building of a church community. The love of Christ
evident in the lives of those original 46 families is present in those who continue to give of their
time, talent and treasure today, so that our faith community deepens its commitment to Christ in
the ongoing mission of discipleship.

The involvement of the Missionary Servants of the Word in St. John has made great strides
of growth in membership and faith consciousness within the community as a whole. The
challenge ahead is to address this membership growth and raise the levels of faith
consciousness and practice within our membership.
Census studies by the San Bernardino diocese that showed an expected 46.4% increase of
Hispanic/Latino populations, a 38.3% decrease of non-Hispanic whites, a 1 to 8% increase of
Asians/other non-Hispanics, and 7.4% increase of African-Americans by 2001 – have all
materialized. On one hand, the dwindling numbers of non-Hispanic, English-speaking
members that was foretold now present a challenge for a parish leadership to tend to their
spiritual care and nourishment. On the other hand, the increasing number of predominantly
Hispanic memberships present a challenge for expansion of church facilities to address the
overflows that evidence their big numbers at Mass and other sacramental services.
Construction or remodeling existing church facilities indeed comes out as the biggest
challenge now and for the future. Staffing needs as well for vo lunteer workers to handle the
increase of CCD student populations is another big challenge, second to the challenge for
space.
The third big challenge is affirming its membership’s vitality and diversity through the
constant creation or renewal of their parish and outreach ministries to build the community’s
spirituality and stewardship, and ultimately heighten its impact on community life as true
believers of Christ in word and in action.

A Parishioner’s Reflection
THE KEY TO THE FUTURE IS A VILLAGE
By Charlemagne Rafols
You may know the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.”
For me, I literally grew up at St. John’s, first attending Mass there with my family around my
first year of high school in the mid-80’s. At 19, I began volunteering as a lector, under the gracious help
and training of long-time coordinator Jerry Jerrold, who was also a great storyteller.
A few years later - I moved to the “2nd floor” - as I joined the Saturday Mass choir. Richard Alcoy was
the director at the time and was very generous in helping me learn and grow in my musical skills. He
eventually handed the reins over to me and for the next decade, names that began with Becky, Francis,
Joe (R. and G.), Eva, Cely, JR Rony, Irene, Nimia, Dulce, Manny, Josie, Nellie, Jocyl, Patricia, Darrell,
Brando, Tammy, Julia, Andrea along with many “adopted” voice-donating uncles and aunts greatly
assisted me in this new venture.
Then there were my other unforgettable “travel advisors” for the journey of life. Top of mind,
there was Monsignor Ed Cronin, who once told me during a time of decision, “DUC IN ALTUM”.
Fortunately, he did explain the Latin to this post-Vatican II child: “TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH.” I will
always remember his inviting, caring warmth accompanied by the firm wisdom of a former military
chaplain.
Father Mike Fredericks had many of my favorite homilies. He had such a knack for explaining the
deep philosophies and teachings of the Church to me in a way I could understand and relate with - while
still challenging us to grow as people of God.
Nowadays, Father Genaro is one who helps lead me with his fervent holiness and practical advice.
I’m continually inspired by his tireless work in making the parish community even more alive, including
making Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament more readily available .
These were the people who helped show me the face of Christ by their tireless giving and example.
They were part of the small but spirited village of St. John.
For it is not easily to live the true Catholic life in today’s world; that is a given. But with these
faces of Christ surrounding me throughout the years, it has been possible. From the caring nuns I’ve met
(including sisters Joan Marie and Mary Ann and the current Missionary Servants of the Word) to
community groups like Cursillo and the Legion of Mary to the friends and volunteers who too are trying
to find their way in life and in the Church - I realize that I have had the honor of being a part of a great
village. Without it, I wouldn’t have survived.
That is the power of a parish. Today, St. John’s has volunteers who go above and beyond to aid
various ministries - from choirs to youth and adult formation classes to cleaning the church. And we
invite more people to “take a leap of faith” and help. Because the truth is - as a growing, changing,
evangelizing parish community, we are BOTH the village and the child – needing each other to help us
grow as Catholics who are truly alive, in a challenging time. There is a shortage of priests in America,
and we, as lay people, are called even more to give of our gifts – for each other.
That is the necessity of the future of St. John’s. It takes a village to raise… families - that of the
Church and that of the home. I once heard that the end of the world will not come through the
destruction of the atomic bomb, but through the destruction of the family. One can’t make it alone - but
working together, through our flaws, always with the help of Jesus, we will grow, and receive much
more than we give. I know that I have. Because the faces of Christ are right here in this family, this
village called St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church.
