AMPALAYA

Parts Used: Leaves, Roots, and fruits Uses: Can be used as antihelminthic or antiparasitic to expel dysentery and chronic colitis. It is a Philippine herb that has recently gained international recognition for its possible benefits in the treatment of Diabetes Mellitus. Despite its bitter taste, it has also become a popular nutritional drink for a boost of vim and vigor. In fact, the bitterer, the better, as it is believed that the bitterness is proportionate to its potency. It has hypoglycemic peptide, plant insulin responsible for its blood sugar lowering effect. Other benefits suggested were body detoxification (including removal of nicotine), strengthening of the immune system and fertility regulation. It is increasingly recommended as an adjunct or supplement to the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

MADRE CACAO
Parts Utilized: Leaves, bark, roots Uses: considered as potentially antidiarrheal, antidysenteric, antimutagenic antioxidant, bactericidal, hepatoprotective, pesticidal and viricidal. It is used for skin itching by applying the juice of the leaves, bark, or roots on the skin that is pruritic. Fresh leaves applied to the skin as insect repellant. The leaves have a fetid smell that when crushed, it is used to rid dogs of fleas and ticks and cattle of ticks.

BAYABAS
Parts utilized: Leaves and fruits Uses: used as Astringent, antispasmodic, anthelminthic and antiseptic. It is used for cleaning wounds for disinfection. Used for curing diarrhea, toothache andgum swelling. Also used as ingredient in skin whitening products. It could be used as alternative for toothbrush.

OREGANO
Parts utilized: Leaves Uses: It is used to heal burns, also applied in temples and forehead as a substitute to bandages. The juice of the leaves is used to cure dyspepsia,

asthma, chronic coughs, bronchitis, flatulence and rheumatism. It is also a cure to sprains, painful swellings and boils.

SAMBONG
Parts Utilized: Leaves and roots Uses: Used as cure for fever, cystitis, rheumatic pains of back and waist and sinuses. It could be used as disinfectant. It is also a cure for headaches. Also used to people with elevated cholesterol and an analgesic for postoperative dental pains.

TAWA-TAWA
Parts Utilized: Pseudobulbs Uses: Used to ease the pain felt. It is applied to stomach to expel malignant tumors and worms. It is believed to increase the number of platelets. Used for colics. Used to treat bronchitis, asthma and chronic dysentery. It is used to heal burns, boils and wounds. It is used to dininfect wounds. The roots are used in snake bites.

BAWANG
Parts Utilized: Bulb Uses: It is a diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, anthelmintic, and stimulant. As an antiseptic, its use has long been recognized. It was widely employed in the control of suppuration in wounds. The raw juice was expressed, diluted with water, and put on swabs of sterilized Sphagnum moss, which were applied to the wound. Where this treatment was given, it was proved that there were no septic results, and the lives of thousands of men were saved by its use. Bauang is an invaluable medicine for asthma, hoarseness, coughs, difficulty of

breathing, and most other disorders of the lungs, being of particular virtue in chronic bronchitis, on account of its powers of promoting expectoration.

CARROTS

Parts Utilized: Roots Uses: The many health benefits of carrots would include: useful for toxemia, constipation, asthma, poor complexion, poor teeth, insomnia, high blood pressure, inflamed kidneys and bladder, colitis, and catarrh. They can improve the appearance of hair and nails, help improve eyesight, correct dropsy, end painful urination, increase menstrual flow, and help to keep the skin healthy. The juice of carrots is said to be a great colon cleanser, and cancer preventer.

GABI
Parts utilized: Root Uses: Gabi is a large leaf plant with a tuberous rootstock. It grows wild throughout the Philippines, and is abundant on Mt. Banahaw. The roots are a staple food in some localities. The tubers are digestive, laxative, diuretic, lactagogue, and styptic.

GUMAMELA
Parts Utilized: Flower Uses: Gumamela is cultivated as an ornamental flower throughout the Philippines. It is common on Mt. Banahaw. Gumamela flowers are used as an expectorant in bronchitis, for general coughs, and as a refrigerant drink in fevers.

KALABASA

Parts Utilized: Seeds Uses: Kalabasa seeds are used as an anthelmintic, which is attributed to the presence of saponin in the seeds. They are used to combat tapeworms. The seeds are also used as a diuretic for urinary diseases.

KALAMANSI
Parts Utilized: Fruit Uses: The juice of Kalamansi is known as a refrigerant, a remedy for coughs and for itches, a deodorant, and an antiphlogistic. For more information on Kalamansi.

LUYA
Parts Utilized: Rhizome (root stock) Uses: Japanese researchers have found that Luya causes the heart to beat more strongly and slowly and that blood pressure lowers by 10 to 15 points after Luya is ingested. Indian researchers have found that Luya is also effective in removing cholesterol from both the blood and liver. Luya is also reported to sooth the stomach, helping digestion. It is reported to relive gas, flatulence, and cramping, and facilitate the breakdown of food in the stomach and the absorption of food in the small intestine. A number of researchers have found that Luya is highly effective in alleviating motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting, being more effective than Dramamine. Luya's various isolated components also possess anti-inflammatory, antiviral, diuretic, antifungal, antiseptic, and antibiotic properties. It has been found effective in the treatment of heart disease, migraines, stroke, coughs, dizziness, fever, kidney stones, and viral infections.

SILI

It is an antiseptic, killing pathogens and a counter-irritant, helping to relieve pain. Cayenne is also a stomachic, helping to digest foods and a carminative, helping to expel gas.
