Introduction Twelfth Night or What you will was written by William Shakespeare who was b orn probably on April 23 1564. Twelfth Night was the last Shakespearian comedie s before he entered to the great tragedies. The play was written around 1901-02 as a Twelfth Night entertainment for the close of Christmas season. Also, the pl ay from the very beginning had a musical interludes and prepared the audiences f or the jovial feel of festivities consisting of drink, dance, and giving in to g eneral self-indulgence. On the other hand, Twelfth Night has many themes and each one of theme may be the main theme of the play for its importance and significance in the play. For example, the disguise may consider as a main theme because it develops the c omic plot and it is represented by a main character Viola. The triangle of love may also be the main theme for the same reasons.

Definitions of Imagery There are many definitions for the term "imagery". Caroline defined the ima gery " as the only available word to cover every kind of what is really compress ed simile-metaphor", so the imagery here covers every kind and the use of simile or metaphor is very important especially in using "as" and "like" to reveal the idea without telling the a full interpretation and this idea can reveal by many images. Moreover, the term "imagery" is defined in many ways, the American Heritage dictionary of English language said "a mental picture or image", "the use of vi vid or figurative language to represent objects, actions, or ideas", "the use of expressive or evocative images in are, literature, or music. So, imagery is com monly used in every place not only in drama. Here, imagery has probably the same functions above tell us that the imagery function is to reflect the image of ac tions or ideas in short discourse or may be one word without requesting interpre

tation or analysis.

The images in Twelfth Night Shakespeare used many images in Twelfth Night like : sea, nature, sadness, music, and so many others. For example. The sea captin said to Viola when she wa s wondering about her brother: "like Arion on the dolphin`s back" (I,2,15). Shak espeare used very significant image when the sea captin wanted to give Viola a h ope for her missed brother by similizing his escape from the shipwreck with that of Arion, a legendary Greek musician. The dolphin enchanted by Arion`s music an d for that reason, the dolphin carried him safely to the beach. Obviously, the c aptin wanted to link the actions of Arion with the music at the beginning of the play. These few words give the reader full story for them with out wasting the time in telli such a story. Again, many more examples from the play, may be found, though, we see that Duke uses a nice image when he says: "For a woman are as roses, whose fair flower Being once displaye`d, doth fall that very hour". (II.IV.39) He uses an image of roses and makes them like a woman. Shakespeare uses the meta phor by putting "as" draw sim ilizing between woman and roseds. Further, Shakespeare uses the poetical images at the beginning of play whe n the Duke says these lines for Olivia: O! it came ov`r my ear like the sweet sound That breathes upon a bank of violets, Stealing and giving odour! Here, he uses the image of a "sweet sound". Another example is said by Sir Topy: "it hungs like flax on a distaff" (I.3.103) Sir Topy wants to give an image of Sir Andrew`s hair which looks like flax on a distaff. Also, there is an image in the following: "like a sheriff`s post" The lines above are said by Molvolio explaining that Viola sill stand on Ol ivia`s door like a sheriff`s post. Another image which refers to Duke`s mind tha t his mind like a "very opal" (2.4.76).

Conclusion Obviously, Shakespeare has presented the imagery in avery perfect way. Parti cularly, the imagery has a very effective role in conforming the context to be s uitable for the readers and audiences. Imagery has helped Shakespeare to produce some words to tell a long story instead of wasting many words. For example, whe n that Captin tells Viola about her missed brother. Moreover, imagery is one of the means to keep the audiences in suspense because it presents the context in a

very suitable way without bothering them with long discourse. In addition to th at, imagery helps the audiences and readers to live in the action by drawing th at images of events. Finally, Twelfth Night is a good example in presenting the imagery by using the metaphors and similes which have given the play poetical se nse.
