Over the last decade, plus, Ive been asked numerous times; What do I
do to really land the interview? The days of walking into a company and
just talking to someone are about over. More than ever, people have to
face the cold hard fact that companies are seriously utilizing on-line job
application and tracking systems that you have to get through frst.
Now that youve made it through the screening process, the phone
screen, the potential second phone screen, its now time for the big
moment of the face to face interview. So what are some of the things
that you can do in order to really stand out and knock that interview out
of the ball park?
Ive put together my Top 10 list of what to do and what not to do during the
interview process:
1. DO your research. After prepping 100s if not 1,000s of candidate
over the past decade to go on interviews, I know that the biggest turn
off of a hiring manager is when the potential employee has no idea about
the history of the company, or even what they are interview for with
the company. A huge amount of information can be found by a simple
Google search. Some other areas you might check out are: Linkedin.
com, the Chamber of Commerce website, Better Business Bureau
website, Facebook.com dont make the mistake of thinking companys
dont have a Facebook page. Of course the standard, and a MUST, is to
make sure you check out the company website. Take it from a recruiter if
you dont do your research, dont even bother to show up to the interview.
2. DONT assume that the frst impression is made when you shake the
hand of the hiring manager and sit down in their offce. No, my friend,
it starts when you pull in the parking lot. Dressing in the parking lot -
NO. Empty beer cans falling out of the car in the parking lot - NO. The
receptionist is just an hourly employee WAY BIG NO NO. Many hiring
managers will gauge interaction with the frst person the interviewee
meets in the company and weigh that in their decision. So, the long and
short, just because you are interview for a $50K a year job, dont assume
the receptionist doesnt matter.
3. DO make sure you have at least two copies of your resume with you.
Has your printer ever run out of ink at the last minute? Ever have a power
outage at the offce? Well so have many hiring managers. The worst thing
in the world is to be ready to tell the hiring manager how you are prepared
to handle anything the job will throw at you, and then they ask for a copy
of your resume because they are out of ink and didnt have time to get
it printed, and you dont have a copy. To be honest, I am guilty of using
that trick a few times, especially for key positions that I am recruiting for
a client.
4. DONT spend the frst 10 minutes of the interview talking about the
hiring managers photos on their desk and what all you have in common
and then think it was a great interview. The purpose of the interview if for
you to learn about the job and the company and the company to see if
you are a match for them. Just because you and the hiring manager both
have been trained in underwater basket weaving doesnt mean that you
are going to be good for the job, or that you are a going to land the job off
of that fact. Skills are skills but the hiring manager is paid to make sure
they hire the person with the best skill match for what the company needs
for the position.
5. DO take the time to fll out the required paperwork. All companies have
different hiring requirements. Just because youve flled out an application
on-line doesnt mean that they have all of your information. Remember, to
thorough and complete. Sometimes this can be reviewed to see if you can
follow instructions and how close you pay attention to details.
6. DONT show up at the interview without questions to ask during
the summation part of the interview. If you are using a recruiting or
agency, they should be assisting with this part. Out of the 100s of hiring
managers I speak with on a consistent basis, the biggest erk is when
they ask if there are any questions and the interviewees respond, No,
or Youve answered all the questions I had prepared. Wow that just
demonstrated some serious preparation didnt it?
7. DO not be afraid to ask for the job. Too many interviewees leave the
process, and more importantly the hiring manager, without a sense that
they want the job. At the end of the interview, good eye contact, a frm
hand shake and a simple statement that expresses your interest in the
position could just land you that position.
8. DO NOT leave without the hiring managers contact information. The
second part of the DO NOT in this one is DO NOT call the hiring manager
every day to check in with them about the position. If step 7 is done, you
will know when to follow up. Being a pest doesnt show persistences but
does show that you can be annoying!
9. DO make sure you check with the person that is setting up the
interview about the appropriate dress for the interview. A manual labor
position maybe ok with a nice pair of slacks and a shirt/blouse, however
a law frm would require a full blown business suit. Make sure you know
your environment.
10. DO NOT make the mistake of not having a thank you letter prepared
the night before. If you have done your homework, this should be just
a very simple letter of thanks to the hiring manager. Once you get to
your car, and have the hiring managers contact information, write in the
address and name, and fnd a post offce ASAP. The letter showing up the
next day is one more way to get your name in front of the hiring manager.
Emails will work, if requested by the hiring manager; however a nice, old
fashion letter is something that they can hold in their hand.
Remember, these are just a few tips that might help you land your next
position. Good luck and Happy Hunting!
