English for Immigrants

Needs analysis:
The needs of the potential learners of this course have been
analyzed by using the following tools:

1) An interview:
This interview consists of 20 questions that seek to elicit
information about the learners English language background, the reasons
for which they need this course, the language situations in which they
need English, preferred learning activities they wish this course to
include, and their attitudes towards the American culture. (Appendix 1)

2) A questionnaire:
This questionnaire consists of three parts and aims at providing
information in three different dimensions.
The first dimension is about what situations in which English will
be useful for the learners.
The second one is about which activities the learners wish this
course to include.
The third is about the frequencies with which difficulties are
encountered in learning different language skills. (Appendix 2)

3) A proficiency test:
This test consists of 4 parts .All the test items are of multiple
choices.
The first two parts test English grammar and each part of them
consists of 15 items.
The third part tests English vocabulary and consists of 10 items.
The fourth part tests English reading comprehension and consists of
10 items. (Appendix 3)
