Advantages and Disadvantages of Fitness Testing

Sit and Reach-(Flexibility) Advantages

Easy to perform and quick to perform A box, ruler and measuring sheet can be used if you dont have access to a sit and reach box A lot of data for comparison because it is the most common test for flexibility

Disadvantages
Potential for inconsistency Different arm and leg lengths for different people Has to be done indoors in a dry environment

Validity-

This tests only measures the flexibility of the lower back and hamstrings, and is a valid measure of this

Reliability-

The reliability will depend on the amount of warm-up

allowed, and whether the same procedures are followed each time. Most norms are based on no previous warm-up, though the best results will be achieved after a warm up or if the test is proceeded by a test such as the endurance test which can act as a warm up. If a warm up is used, it is important to have a standardized warm up and test order and repeat it for each test.

Hand Grip Dynometer-(Strength) Advantages

Simple to perform and quick to perform Many norms available for comparison Can be performed anywhere

Disadvantages
Must be calibrated Expensive to buy one

Validity- The validity of this test as a measure of general strength

has been questioned, as the strength of the forearm muscles does not necessarily represent the strength of other muscle groups. If you wish to measure the strength of a particular muscle group, there are other specific tests that can be performed.

Reliability- the dynamometer may need to be calibrated

regularly to ensure consistent results. Having consistent technique and adequate rest is required to ensure reliability

Press Up Test-(Aerobic Endurance) Advantages

Easy and quick to

Disadvantages
A skilful performer would

perform Can be performed anywhere Minimal Cost Many can do be tested at once Minimal equipment needed

have a better result than an average performer Tests general strength and not specific strength areas

Validity- This test provides a means to

monitor the effect of training on the athlete's physical development. Validity could be affected by performers not lowering and raising properly in accordance to the procedure.

Reliability- Reliability will depend upon how strict

the test is conducted and the individual's level of motivation to perform the test.

35 Metre Sprint-(Speed) Advantages

Easy to perform

Disadvantages
A skilful performer would perform better than an average performer

Minimal cost if using cones Test can be performed anywhere More than one person can perform at a time

Expensive if using windgates Incorrect footwear could affect results

Weather could affect results

Validity-

Validity could be affected by an assistant not stopping the

stopwatch when you cross the line specifically.

Reliability-

Reliability is greatly improved if timing gates are used.

Also weather conditions and running surface can affect the results, and these conditions should be recorded with the results. If possible, set up the track with a crosswind to minimize the effect of wind.

Vertical Jump-(Power) Advantages

Quick and Easy to perform

Disadvantages
Weather a warm up has been provided will affect results Only one person can perform at any time

Minimal equipment required- a marked metre wall will be fine Test can be performed in Heavy clothing could any environment inhibit a better performance

Technique plays a great part in performance
