WHO IS SRI SAI BABA OF SHIRDI?

In His own words--Sri Sai Baba was a poor FAKIR, a servant of God who came to serve the
people. Some of His contemporaries at first thought He was a "mad" man, who often spoke
to himself or some one invisible.

Later, He was held reverentially as a Hakim (Doctor) who cured villagers around Shirdi
with leaves, shrubs and unheard of remedies.

Still later, He became their "Miracle Man", Omnipresent, Omniscient and Omnipotent
who could even control the devastating elements.

Some of His later contemporary devotees saw in Him the images of their Gods or Deities
like Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, Vithoba or Pandurang etc.
AND TODAY, millions of people around the world, who have never seen Him alive, still
worship Him as the Avalia or Avatar of Allah or Lord Himself or Bhagawan or God for He
still continues to ANSWER their fervent prayers or provides SUCCOUR to His earnest
devotees, spread around the globe, in their pressing moments of life and STILL guides
them on their Spiritual Pathway.

With our Pranams and surrender at the Lotus Feet of the Divine Lord Sai Baba, we are
happy to present a collection of Shirdi Sai’s assurances and messages of His Avatarhood on
earth for the happiness and bliss of our beloved members.

WHO WAS SAI BABA?

Sai Baba was not only a great saint but "God incarnate" Himself in the eyes of the millions
of devotees of different cast, creed and also religion. The great savior (Sai means savior)
descended on mother earth around 1854 and took his Samadhi on 15th October 1918 [on a
Vijayadashami Day] to the best of our known records. Sai Baba of Shirdi lives in the hearts
of his devotees today and always. Sai Baba as he is commonly known is also the common
man's God. His first visit to Shirdi was anonymous but he was noticed meditating under a
Neem tree in the outskirts of Shirdi. For the second time he was seen at a wedding in which
he was incidentally the guest of honour in 1858. Sai Baba graced the village of Shirdi by
spending his physical life from 1858 to 1918. Sai Baba was a figure for love, compassion,
empathy and Divinity. He enjoyed dance and music too. He used to sing and dance in
Divine bliss with in the company of Fakhirs and devotee's. His attire was in the form of a
long shirt known as Kafni and a cloth tied around His head. He represented a common
man who could get angry, have varying moods and on the other hand be full of love and
compassion. Under over this idol of simplicity was God himself. He worked for self-
realisation of millions of devotees spiritually.

Teachings of Sai Baba

Sai Baba did not leave behind any written teachings or discourses because he never wanted
to "teach." Sai Baba often said that he came to awaken not to teach. He sought to bring
about awakening through the medium of love. His teachings as reported by his
devotees/followers can be summed up as below:

The devotee should know that my spirit is immortal.

I keep my eye on those who love forever.
I am everywhere and in all places and the whole world is with me.
I move everywhere and anywhere. I pervade the universe.
I am both the visible and the invisible.
I am unborn, eternal and everlasting.
I am merciful to all. I am not beholden to anyone except God.

Do not remain idle but engage yourself in some useful activity. Read the sacred texts. Be
moderate in your food and recreation.

Surrender the fruit of action to him so that action will not harm or bind you. Let your love
and compassion flow to all creatures of God. Do not engage in controversy. World (of
others) cannot harm you. Bear with others patiently. Accept your log cheerfully without
comparing yourself with others. Do not speak ill of others. Do not give tit for tat because
each is answerable for his own actions.
Know that God is. Do not believe that God is not. God is omnipresent. God's name is
eternal. This universe is all a Leela of God.

Only he knows how he will protect and sustain. He is the protector of the poor. He is very
compassionate. We falter in our faith in Him and lack sufficient patience.

Herculean effort is necessary for the attainment of God.

Who says He is out of reach? He is there in the tabernacle of our heart, nearer to us than
the fingernail to the finger. Without unflinching faith and patience, you will not see Him.
One who has both these will undoubtedly find Him. It needs insight to recognise God.

His Will be done. He will show the way and all your heart's desires will be fulfilled. Be
content with your lot. Light dispels darkness.

Do good and offer it to God and He will bless you. Do evil and you will displease Him. God
protects the righteous. Those who sow nettles expect me to give them corn. How can I do
so?

I am God's slave. Even the learned are confused. Then what of us? Listen and be silent.
One who has received His grace is silent, but who falls from grace talks too much. His
Grace must be earned by merit.

The udi will be most useful for my devotees. Preserve it carefully. My men will throng to
Shirdi like ants. Fear not. I am always with you. Men may come and men may go. What do
we have to do with it? How does it concern us?

People inhabit villages and towns. I live in jungle. People have a roof over their head. I
have none. I have single-horse carriage (the vital breath, prana) but it carries ten to twelve
men (organs). I will slay the four bodies (the gross body, subtle body, casual body and the
mahakaran).

Do not think I am dead and gone. You will hear me from my samadhi and I shall guide you.
Do not engage in controversy. For every ten words you hear, speak only one word, if that is
necessary.
You need neither praise nor blame others. If you injure others' feelings, I suffer. I feel
disgusted when you quarrel with others.

Members in a family are bound to have differences. But do not quarrel. One, who means
well, will do well. If you do good, good will follow.

Great is the reward of virtue. The vicious suffer.

If wealth is used judiciously, it will be beneficial.

Wholesome food will bring good health. A man of restraint is better than a man of
indulgence. Do not covet others' wealth.

See how selfish people are. When it suits them, they leave their companion. So attach
yourself to one who will never forsake you. (There is no such companion except the
Sadguru. Love the creation but keep company with the Sadguru for his companionship will
conduce to your welfare).
Once you entrust yourself to the hands of the Sadguru, you do not have to worry. I never
forsake any one who relies on me. One has to accept the guru wholeheartedly and not
mechanically.

Why grieve for the loss of son? Everyone has to die one day. In this mortal world, death is
inevitable. Whatever may happen, one should remains steadfast and watch everything with
detachment.

Be hospitable to anyone who comes to you. Give water to the thirsty, bread to the hungry,
clothing to the naked and shelter to the homeless and God will bless you. Whatever you
give me will come back to you redoubled. If you sow then only can you reap.

One who is enlightened will not make a noise about it. You cannot escape what is pre-
ordained. You may face it with a groan or a smile. Only that choice is yours. Earth will
return to earth, and the soul will fly away. Practice before you preach.

The distance of Shirdi from some important cities is as under

Sai Baba's place Shirdi (Maharashtra State) is a very sacred, powerful and important place
of pilgrimage in India. One can visit this holy place easily. It is a well-developed town
connected by bus routes. There is an important Railway Station, Kopergaon, though which
the Karnataka Express from New Delhi to Bangalore passes. A number of trains from
Bombay and Delhi also pass through Manmad station. Shirdi is only about 58 kms from
Manmad and buses and taxis are easily available to reach there.

Devotee as soon as they reach the outskirts of Shirdi get inspired and become humble and
reverential by the very glimpse of this Magnificent and Majestic Spire of Sri Sai Baba's
Samadhi Mandir

FIRST RECORDED MIRACLE

One day, Chand Patil, a rich Muslim gentleman and village officer from a village called
Dhoop in Aurangabad District was wandering with a saddle on his back looking for his
mare. A young Fakir sitting under a Mango Tree called him and invited him to smoke
Chilim (Indian Pipe). The Fakir asked him why he carried a saddle. When Chand Patil told
him he had lost his mare, the Fakir asked him to look in the nearby nalla. To his great
surprise, Chand Patil found his mare grazing there although earlier he had passed through
there and had not seen his mare. Chand Patil then realized that the Fakir was not an
ordinary mendicant or beggar but an Avalia (a great saint).

Soon he returned to thank the Fakir, who struck His Satka (stick or prong) on the ground
and scooped/picked up a burning coal to light the pipe. Again he dashed the Satka to the
ground and water sprang out leaving Chand Patil amazed. He wet the cloth, wrapped it
round the Chilim, took a drag and offered it to Chand Patil. Chand Patil invited the Fakir
to his house in Dhoop.

Next day the lad came to Chand Patil's house. Chand Patil's wife's brother's son was to be
married to a girl from Shirdi and the Fakir was invited to join the marriage party.

Sai Welcome in Khandoba Temple

The marriage party alighted in Mahalasapati’s field near Khandoba Temple in Shirdi.
When Mahalasapati saw the young Fakir, he welcomed him as "Aao Sai" (welcome Sai).
And that name stuck and everyone referred to Him as" Sai Baba". (This was some time in
1858 when Sai Baba was 19 or 20 years old.)

The marriage Party returned but Sai Baba stayed in Shirdi since then until His
Mahasamadhi on October 15, l918 and Shirdi became immortal. He had said crowds will
flock to Shirdi like hordes of ants and today it is literally true.

Advent of Sai Baba in Shirdi:

Shri Sai Baba first manifested as a fair, young, worldly-wise but endearing lad of 16 under
a Neem Tree in Shirdi (sometime in 1854), full of knowledge of Brahman or Self, practicing
hard penance day and night in utter disregard to the scorching heat and biting cold. He
associated with no one and the villagers, who became curious about Him, asked Khandoba
(Deity of Shirdi) when he "possessed" a villager: "What blessed father's son is this lad and
from where has he come?"

The Khandoba- possessed man pointed to a spot and asked them to dig it up, where a
corridor was discovered leading to a cellar lighted with four burning lamps inside. God
Khandoba told villagers that the lad practiced penance here for 12 years.

When questioned, the lad confirmed it was His Guru's place and requested the villagers to
close and guard the corridor. (From the above it has been deduced/surmised that Sai Baba
was born in 1838 and attained Samadhi in 1918. However, nothing is known about the first
16 years, of which 12 years were spent with his Guru, which He himself had confirmed).

Gurusthan

Today, the Guru's place is venerated as the "Gurusthan". A memorial was raised to
record Shree Sai Baba's first appearance under the Neem Tree, in 1912 or thereabout, by
installing His stone-Padukas (footwear) as suggested by Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar, (a
compounder and devotee of Swami Akkalkot Maharaj), Sagun Meru Naik and G. K. Dixit.
The Padukas were designed by Dr Ramarao Kothare, Alibagkar's employer, improved by
Upasani Maharaj, and touched and blessed by Shree Sai Baba Himself saying that these
are the feet of Lord and asked them to install them under the foot of Neem Tree. Later the
site was converted into "Gurusthan".

After about 3 years' stay, the lad vanished from Shirdi and no one knew where He was. He
was soon forgotten. He reappeared near Aurangabad, which was a part of Nizam State in
those days.

Sai Baba Burning oil Lamps with water

Likewise, Sai Baba would beg for oil to burn the all-night lamps in the Masjid and temples
in Shirdi. Once the oil shopkeepers decided to refuse to give oil to Shree Sai Baba. Sai Baba
was unperturbed. He put wicks in the lamps and some water in the oil tin pot and drank it.
Then he again put water in the tin pot and poured into the lamps and lit them. To the utter
amazement of shopkeepers, the lamps kept burning all night.

It is true Sai Baba used to ask for "Dakshina" (donations) from visitors, which was
misunderstood as to why a nonattached Fakir should want money. At first, for a long
time, Sri Sai Baba did not take anything even if it was offered. Later with these offerings
He purchased tobacco for His Chilim (pipe) or oil for night lamps or wood or fuel for
Dhuni and gave remaining to certain devotees every day.
He once said that He was a Fakir without any wants or family to support so He did not
really need this money but Dwarkamai told Him to recover the 'outstanding debts' from
some visitors. And to those who gave, He had to return hundred times the amount given to
Him. Some believed that since Hindu Shastra lays stress on "Dana" (charity), Sai Baba
extracted Dakshina from some. But when He laid down His life, He had in possession
hardly any money on Him.

Sai watering plant-Lendi Bagh

When Shree Sai Baba first appeared as a Lad of 16, he would often roam about in the
jungles. One Bayajabai, Tatya Kote Patil's mother, would carry a basket of food for Him in
the blazing sun and feed Him perforce. But Shree Sai Baba never forgot this service and it
greatly benefited her son.

After his second appearance, Sai Baba daily visited certain homes, begging for food,
carrying a tin pot (Tumrel) to collect liquids and a cloth bag or "zolli" for dry chapattis
(bread) and put all in a kundi or earthen pot in the Masjid. Whoever was in need of food
would take some from it, even dogs and cats included. The devotees and Sai Baba would
share the remaining food. Blessed were the Families of Shirdi from whom Sai Baba begged
food every day.

Once Vaishya Saint from Puntambe, named Gangagir, who frequented Shirdi, saw the
young Lad carrying pots of water to his garden or bed of flowers planted at the place where
the Samadhi Mandir now proudly stands. Suddenly he said: "Blessed is Shirdi that it has
got this precious jewel. This lad is carrying water today but He is not an ordinary fellow. As
this land (Shirdi) is lucky and meritorious, it secured this Jewel".

Another saint, Anandnath of Yeola Math (Ashram), a disciple of Akkalkot Maharaj said
(when he first saw him in 1885): "This is a precious Diamond in reality. Though he looks an
ordinary man, he is not an ordinary stone but a Diamond. You will realize this in near
future."

Sai Baba sitting in Dwarkamayi-original photo

Soon Sai Baba began to stay permanently in a deserted Masjid, which he later named as
"Dwarkamai". Not only the villagers, but even the saintly persons of Shirdi like Devidas
and Jankidas began to love Sai Baba's company and slowly villagers began to gather
around Him.

The old Masjid was repaired (in 1912) and a pavement was constructed for the ever-
increasing hordes of devotees. Today, there is no Sai Baba in Dwarkamayi but His Divine
Vibrations have survived in Dwarkamayi for the sincere devotees to attune and experience
as if He is still residing there.

Sai Dancing with ghungroos

First, Sai Baba used to stay in temples in Shirdi and then in Takia where he used to dance
merrily with ghungroos tied to His feet.

Sai washing leper's wounds

One such blessed Devotee and constant companion of Sai Baba was Bhagoji Shinde whom
villagers had ostracized as he was afflicted by leprosy, the dreaded disease. Diffident to
approach Sai Baba, He would stand far away but Sai Baba noticed Him and called him
near. He washed his wounds and applied certain medicines, which greatly cured him.

Bhagoji continued to serve Sai Baba all the time and followed Him like a shadow. He used
to dress Sai Baba's hand burnt in Dhuni while saving the child of a blacksmith and did not
allow a qualified Doctor to cure it as He wanted to give an opportunity to Shinde to serve
Him. He would clean the road where Sai Baba went and held an umbrella over His head
when He went to Lendi Baugh area. His eyes were always fixed on Sai and hence it was he
who saw Baba's breathing stop at the end.

Ram & Rahim are ONE

One of the main Sri Sai Baba's Mission in the present Avatar to bridge the ever-widening
gulf between the different communities especially Hindus and Muslims.

His constant advice was: "RAMA and RAHIM were one and the same; there was not the
slightest difference between them; then why should their devotees fall out and quarrel
among themselves? You ignorant folks, children join hands and bring both the
communities (Hindus & Muslims) together, act sanely and you will quickly gain your
objective of "National Unity". It is neither good to dispute nor argue. Don't emulate others.
Always consider your interest and welfare first. The Lord will protect you both. Yoga,
sacrifice, penance and knowledge are the means to attain God. If you do not succeed in
attaining God by any of these means now, vain is your birth. If anyone does any evil unto
you, do not retaliate. If you can do anything, do some good unto others."

He always said: "Allah Malik" or "Sub Ka Malik ek". Maybe, because of this, he kept his
parentage a secret. Even when there appeared to be a stalemate on the question of burial
after He attained the Highest Initiation, suddenly and swiftly agreement was reached on
the second day.

No one really knew whether Sai Baba was a Hindu or Muslim. He allowed celebrating
Hindu Festivals of Ram Navami and Gokul Ashtami and at the same time He
allowed Sandal Procession, Namaj Prayers on Id Days in Masjid and Tajiya or tabut in
Moharum. His ears were pierced but He advocated the practice of circumcision. He had
Dhuni (sacred fire of Hindus) in Masjid as also grinding, blowing of conch and bells and
Bhajans in the Masjid. He distributed Udi, the ash from Dhuni or fireplace, and a lot of
miracle cures are attributed to this Udi even today.

Sai Baba & Bhagawat Gita

Nanasaheb Chandorkar was a good student of Vedanta and Bhagawat Gita and took pride
in his knowledge of Sanskrit. One day he was reciting some Sanskrit Slokas from Bhagawat
Geeta and Sai Baba showed as if he did not understand its meaning and asked him to
explain. Shree Sai Baba asked certain searching questions which exposed Chandorkar's
perfunctory knowledge and understanding.

In another instance, Sai Baba faced questions asked by the Commissioner appointed by
the Dhulia Court in a criminal case of theft against a devotee, who mentioned that Baba
gave him the articles seized from him. Dhulia court ordered examination of Baba. On
request of devotees, he dispensed with his presence in court and directed the
Commissioner to examine Him in Shirdi at His own place.

The examination of witness (Sai Baba) went as follows: -

Commissioner(C): What is your name?

Baba: All these people call me Sai Baba.

C: What is your father's name?

B: That also is Sai Baba.

C: Who is your guru?

B: Venkusa

C: Religion?

B: Kabir

C: Caste?

B. God

C: Your Age?

B: Lakhs of years.

C: Say correctly?

B: I never lie.

Sai cooking in Handi

Taitiriya Upanishad says, " Food is Brahma". Sai Baba Himself required very little food
for which He normally begged, but at some point He decided to distribute food to all
visitors.

He used to make all preparations Himself and never troubled any one. He would shop for
the materials Himself paying cash. In the open Courtyard of the Masjid, He would prepare
fire and keep "Handi" or pot (small Handi cooked for 50 persons and the large one for 100
persons) over it with proper measure of water.

Sometimes He cooked "Mithe Chaval" (sweet rice) and sometimes mutton "pulava"; at
times He put small balls of cooked wheat flour into "varan"( soup). He ground the spices
on a stone slab and put thin pulverized spices into the cooking pot on fire. He ensured the
dishes were palatable and tasty. He prepared "ambil" by boiling "jwari" flour in
water and later mixing it in buttermilk, then boiling it together.

He never used ladles or spoons or anything to see whether the cooking was done but thrust
His bare arm in the boiling cauldron and churned the food without His arm ever getting
burnt. Then He got the cooked food consecrated by the Moulvi (Muslim priest). First He
sent a portion of food as prasad to Mahalasapati and Tatya Patil and then served by His
own hands to all the poor and helpless people. This "Handi" Cooking went on till 1910
after which the number of visitors increased and they brought in gifts of food for Sai Baba.
Blessed are those who partook of these Divine Dishes.

Chavadi Procession
After Sai Baba started sleeping alternate days in Chavadi, the devotees began to offer
regular worship in Chavadi (from December, l909).

Sai Baba was taken in a procession to Chavadi and it was a treat to watch the grandeur of
this procession, which has been retained and can be seen even today.

Sai Baba allowed devotees to worship the way they wanted and it is these devotees who
started the various Aartis in the morning, afternoon and night. Sai Baba never liked if any
of His devotees criticized other devotees who worshipped Him in some particular way.
Many devotees massaged His legs and body and offered many such services.

Likewise, nobody could go to Shirdi of his own accord and nobody could stay there longer
even if he so wished unless Sai Baba permitted him. Further, before leaving Shirdi, Sai
Baba's clearance was a must and if some one dared to disobey and go when not permitted,
he was sure to face hurdles on the way. So it is not known whether it was punishment for
disobeying His orders or premonition of events to happen.

DWARAKAMAYI – the most powerful and beloved Lord

Everything else is just the same in Dwarakamayi excepting that Dhuni is behind the grille
to protect devotees from fire and a huge beautiful portrait by a well-known painter-
devotee, Shamrao Jayakar, adorns/graces the place where Sai Baba used to sit. And in the
courtyard, Sai Baba sits majestically on a rock (which He is said to have materialized) and
beckons/attracts us to come under His protective shadow or wings.

MEDITATIONS ON GURU - Shirdi Sai Baba's Divine declarations2

Function of the mind is to think and it cannot switch off this thinking process completely
anytime. But if you give it a sense object, like a Guru, it will meditate on Him alone. But
FAITH & PATIENCE are all that are needed.

Believe Me, these simple WORDS will give you Hope & Confidence even when I pass away.
But can you trust Me? For it is far more easy to put away Pride of Wealth, but immensely
hard to give up Pride of Learning, Wisdom or Righteousness?

My treasury is full with spiritual nuggets and I can give My Gifts to anyone desiring them
when found competent to receive them. If you listen to Me carefully and always
MEDITATE on ME, you will surely benefit. For I never speak any UNTRUTH while sitting
in this Masjid (Dwelling place of Sai Baba).

Many Ways lead to Self Realisation, but they are difficult, passing through jungle full of
tigers and wolves (pitfalls & hardships). But if you take a GURU, as your guide, He will
take you straight to your destination, avoiding all wolves, tigers and ditches on the way.
Without a Guru, as your Guide, there is always danger in missing your destination in the
darkness on the Way.

The Path of Self-Realisation (enlightenment) is as DIFFICULT as walking on a razor's

edge. For one must fully surrender five pranas (Vital Forces) and five senses (of action,
perception, mind, intellect and ego).

But listening to My Leelas (Stories or Teachings) will create Shraddha (Faith) in your
heart and with little Saburi (Patience) you can overcome obstacles leading to Self
Realisation & Bliss.
PURIFICATION OF MIND - Shirdi Sai Baba's Divine declarations-3

Conditions essential to attain self-realisation are:

1. Intense Desire for freedom from bondage--'Mumuksha'

2. A feeling of Disgust with the material world--'Virakti'
a. Introversion or inward gazing--'Antarmukhata'
b. Purging of one's sins-Catharsis;
c. Right Conduct;
d. Preference for Good over pleasant things--'Shreyas over Preyas'
e. Control of Mind & Senses
f. Purification of Mind-desirelessness-makes for 'Viveka & Vairgya '
g. Understanding Necessity of a Guru; and
h. Finally, Lord's Grace (without which nothing is possible)

Unless Greed or Avarice is overcome, Self-Realisation cannot be attained. How can a Mind
immersed in Wealth, Progeny or Prosperity expect to know SELF without shedding such
attachments? A person devoid of desire can ALONE cross this whirlpool.

For Greed & Self are poles apart--eternal opposites. Where there is greed, there is hardly
any room for Meditation on Self. Then how is Salvation possible? A greedy man has no
Peace, Contentment, nor Steadiness of Mind. Hence, all the Sadhanas (Spiritual
Practices) are of no use to him.

Therefore, Purification of Mind is absolutely necessary for any Spiritual Endeavor, one
must accept only what can be digested or assimilated.

72 HOURS' SAMADHI--a milestone:

In the month of Margashirsh (December), on a full moon day (in late1886), Sai Baba made
an ‘attempt’ to cross the borderline and to enter deep Samadhi. Apparently to get rid of an
attack of Asthma, Sai Baba went into Samadhi after telling Mahalasapati: "Protect my
Body for 3 days...If I don't return, bury my Body in that place (pointing it out) and fix 2
flags there to mark it."

Sai Baba lay down at about 10 p.m. and His breathing and pulse stopped. His Body was
lifeless. All people and villagers gathered there and wanted to hold inquest and bury His
body. But Mahalasapati prevented them all. With Sai Baba's body in his lap, he sat
guarding it for 3 full days. After 3 days, Sai Baba showed signs of life at 3 a.m. His
breathing commenced and His belly (stomach) began to move. He opened His eyes and
stretched His limbs as if rising from sleep. All were overjoyed.

After this 72-hour's Samadhi experience, Sai Baba's life story seemed to pick up real
momentum from the time Abdulla arrived in Shirdi from Nanded (in 1889). It is true that
there are few records of stories or Leelas before this milestone, as most of the villagers were
illiterate, but Hemadpant (G.R. Dabholkar), author of "Shree Sai Satcharita” who first
visited Shirdi in 1910 and was assigned the work of writing Sai Baba's life story at his own
request, collected and kept lots of notes of happenings in Shirdi even before his arrival.

The "Sai Leelas" (stories of miracles and cures Baba performed and a string of evolved
devotees He attracted to the Sai Durbar), which reflect favorably on His Spiritual
Advancement, omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience, have been
extensively documented by some of His literate contemporaries in books and throw
additional light on these Leelas which not only make a wonderful reading but help
strengthen our faith and love for Sri Sai Baba.

H.H. Narasimha Swami, who literally took Sai Baba to the Southern India, interviewed
some of His contemporaries who were alive around 1939 and had seen Sai Baba in His
Sagun Swarupa.

These Sai Leelas are no doubt important but the reason we look to Him even today is that
He still " responds" to our humble entreaties as if He was still sitting in Shirdi.

Urs Celebrations

In 1896, one Mr. Gopal Rao Gund, circle inspector at Kopergaon, thought of holding Urs
(fair) at Shirdi. When Shree Sai Baba's consent was sought, He fixed Ramanavami Day for
the celebrations. The first celebration was held in 1897, when Hindu community started
Two Flag Procession and wrestling bouts and other programmes were also held.

Perhaps, Sai Baba desired unification of the two warring communities by slating the
celebrations on Ramanavami Day. For one Mr. Amir Shakkar Dalal, a Muslim from
Korhba, started the "Sandal" Procession in the honor of the great Muslim Saint on the
same day when Sandal i.e. chandan paste and scrapings, were carried with incense burning
through the streets. All communities joined both the Processions although held on the same
day.

From 1912, Ramanavami Celebrations with regular Kirtans by Haridas replaced the Urs
Procession and celebrations. Even today, hordes of people from everywhere attend
Ramanavami Celebrations at Shirdi.

Sai Baba on Plank

Mr Nanasaheb Dengle brought a narrow wooden plank (4 arms in length and only a span
in width) (in 1898), for Sai Baba to sleep. But instead of keeping it on the floor, He tied it
about 7 to 8 feet high from the ground like a swing to the rafters with old thin shreds or
rags.

It was a miracle how Sai Baba got on to it and slept there (at the approximate age of 60).
On the four corners, he kept lighted earthen lamps burning whole night. It was a sight to
see and all wondered and became curious to see but none could see Him either going up or
coming down.

Subsequently, crowds increased and He broke the plank and started sleeping on ground
with two of his disciples viz Mahalasapati and Tatya Kote Patil with their heads to the East,
West and North and with their feet touching one another at the center. They lay thus and
chatted till late midnight and if one of them dosed off, others would wake him up by pulling
and shaking him up. This continued for 14 years until Tatya's father's death when he
started sleeping in his home. Sometime during these years, Sai Baba started sleeping alone
alternate days in the Chavadi (a small building of 2 rooms near Masjid).

Preparation for Sai's final journey

As a preparation for the final journey, Sai Baba had ordered Mr. Vaze to read Ram Vijay
to Him several times over 14 days and let him go when Vaze was exhausted. (It is the
practice of Hindus to read Bhagawat Gita or any sacred book to the dying person.)
Likewise, He had certain Muslim devotee perform penance, which is an indication that He
knew His end was near.

Sai Baba Himself gave another indication of coming events. There was an old brick in the
Masjid on which Sai Baba rested His hand and leaned against at nighttime. One day,
during Baba's absence from the Masjid, a boy who used to sweep the floor accidentally
dropped it and broke it into 2 pieces. When Sai Baba learnt it, He bemoaned: "It is not the
brick, but My Fate that has been broken into pieces. It was My life long companion, with it
I always meditated on the Self, it was as dear to Me as My Life, it has left Me today."

(It is said His Guru who had stopped it in midair when some jealous people threw it on
young Sai Baba gave the brick to Him. And His lamentation when it broke into pieces then
becomes understandable.)

New Sai Samadhi Mandir

Further work was entrusted to Bapusaheb Jog. Booty thought that there should be an open
room or platform in the center, where the image of Muralidhar (Lord Krishna playing
Flute) could be installed. He told Shama to get Sai Baba's consent who said " After the
temple is complete I will come there to stay..." and staring at the Wada said "...we shall use
it ourselves, we shall live, move and play there, embrace each other and be very happy."
HOW VERY PROPHETIC!

Then Shama asked Sai Baba whether it was auspicious to start construction of the
foundation work of the central room of the Shrine/Temple? Sai Baba agreed and a coconut
was broken. The work was started and, in due course, it was completed when the order for
the statue of the Muralidhar was given.

But before it was ready, Sai Baba fell seriously ill and was about to pass away. Booty
became very dejected as the Wada would not be consecrated by the holy touch of Sai
Baba's feet and all his money would be wasted. But the final words of Sai Baba that "Place
me in the Wada" not only consoled Booty but all His ardent devotees. In due time, Sai
Baba's holy body was placed and preserved in the central shrine designed for Muralidhar
and Sai Baba Himself became the Muralidhar of all and the Booty Wada became the
Samadhi Mandir.

Fallen Sai Baba

Sai Baba attained Samadhi on Tuesday, the 15th October 1918 at 2.30 p.m. It was
Vijayadasami Day (Dasara).

Two years before, as Baba had given a hint of His passing away on this very day when He
said, "This is my Seemollannghan" (crossing the border).

On another occasion when Ramachandra Patil fell seriously ill, Sai Baba told him in his
dream one night that his death warrant was withdrawn but He was worried for Tatya Patil,
who, He said, would pass away on Vijayadasami Day (of 1918), but do not divulge this to
anybody, nor to him, for he will be terribly frightened." This was 2 years earlier and
Ramachandra Patil who could not keep this secret to himself, told to Bala Shimpi and no
one else.

True to Sai Baba's words, Tatya Patil fell ill and became very serious. Even Sai Baba had
fever and took ill. Both Shimpi and Ramachandra were frightened. On the Vijayadashami
Day, Tatya's pulse began to beat slower and he was about to pass away. Suddenly Tatya
recovered and instead Sai Baba breathed His last. People said Sai Baba gave up His life for
Tatya. He alone knows.

Or was it that He predicted His Passing over by substituting Tatya's name. Sai Baba had
stopped going around for food for 2 or 3 days and sat in Masjid.

Some devotees used to lunch with Him every day. He told them to go home for lunch on
that Vijayadashami Day and only a handful like Laxmibai Shinde, Bhagoji Shinde, Bayaji,
Laxman Bala Shimpi and Nanasaheb Nimonkar remained behind. Shama was sitting on
the steps. Just before the last moment, Sai Baba sat erect without anyone's help and looked
better and people thought the danger was over.

He called Laxmibai and put His hand into His pocket and gave her just Rs 5/- and then
Rs4/-. This is significant because Laxmibai was a well-to-do woman and did not need such
money. Was He then referring to the 9 qualities of a good devotee? He asked to be taken to
Dagadi (Stone) Wada of Booty where He could feel better but before He could go, He
leaned on Bayaji's body and breathed His last. Bhagoji saw His breathing had stopped and
told Nanasaheb Nimonkar who rushed to get water and poured in His mouth and gave out
a loud cry "Oh Deva". Baba seemed to open His eyes and say "Ah!" in a feeble tone but
all was over.

Mourning Shirdi

The news spread out like wildfire and villagers began to crowd. Shirdi was mourning and
His devotees from far and wide began pouring into Shirdi.

The two communities had a minor difference of opinion --whether to bury Sai Baba in the
open space or in the Booty's Wada. It took few hours to come to an unanimous decision.

Following morning, Sai Baba appeared to Das Ganu at Pandharpur in his dream and said:
"The Masjid collapsed, all the oilmen and grocers of Shirdi teased me a lot, so I left the
place. I came to inform you to go there quickly and cover Me with 'Bhakkal' Flowers". Das
Ganu got confirmation from Shirdi and rushed with his disciples and started Bhajans and
Kirtans in Lord's name throughout the day and gave mass feeding in Sai Baba's name.

Sai Baba also appeared to Laxman Mama Joshi in his dream and said: "Get up soon,
Bapusaheb thinks that I am dead and so he won't come; you do the Kakad Arti (morning
worship)". He rushed with Puja materials and started the Puja and Kakad Arati as usual.
Bapusaheb Jog did noon Arati as usual.

Then the portion of the Wada was dug up. Sai Baba's body was taken in procession on
Wednesday evening and buried in the place meant for Muralidhar. Balasaheb Bhate and
Upasani Maharaj performed the funeral rites. It was observed that Sai Baba's body did not
get stiff inspite of 36 hours and all the limbs were elastic and His Kafni could be taken out
without having to be cut into pieces.

Dattatreya Avatars

For fulfilling His Mission, Sai Baba assumed a body and after it was achieved, He threw
away the body and assumed His infinite aspect. Sai Baba ever lives like His previous
incarnation of God Dattatreya, Narasimha Saraswati of Gangapur, etc. His passing away is
only an outward aspect but really He pervades all animate and inanimate things and is
their Controller and Ruler and resides in our very hearts.

Those who totally surrender themselves to Him and worship Him with wholehearted
devotion, and follow the precepts of "Shraddha" & "Saburi", experience Him and get
attuned with Him in Love, Harmony and Understanding and immensely benefit from His
bounties.

He made no big speeches or left any concrete Teachings or Sermons but He practiced the
very sacred Bhagawat Gita and showed to all and sundry that it is still possible to live even
in these days as advocated by the Lord Krishna in Bhagawat Gita. Hence, even though He
established no Maths or Ashrams or Institutions to propagate His simple Teachings (which
appeal to all humanity) nor appointed any disciples, the number of His devotees the world
over is growing day by day because He runs to their succor whenever they really need His
help pretty badly, just the way He promised when He said: " My tomb will speak to you
when I am no more".

He only asks for undiluted Love for all, sincerity, Shraddha (Faith) and Saburi (immense
patience) but no fasting, penance or elaborate rituals. He allows you to worship Him the
way you want and in the manner you want but He says your God or Guru comes first.
Such a liberal Sadguru who understands our weaknesses and human foibles has never been
seen before. His Divine Vibrations can still be experienced in Dwarkamayi today though
He is no longer physically there but continues to look at us all through His beautiful life-
like portraits adorning the Dwarkamayi or through the images we see everywhere. And like
a Maharashtrian Saint said: "This Universe is my Home". Saints like Sai Baba never die
for they are in reality God Himself.

To which Community He belonged?

Some of His contemporaries believed He was a Hindu by birth, brought up by a Muslim

Fakir. Some believed He was a Muslim Avalia. Some even believed in His Immaculate
Conception.

But has Lord Rama or Lord Krishna come down in our reverence merely because their
parental heritages are known?

This quest for Sai Baba's parents has today become redundant for He has transcended
these manmade barriers and has survived/ spanned two centuries inspite of there being no
organized attempt to promote His teachings. For He still works "miracles" amongst us.

For when you love someone dearly and whole-heartedly, his or her birthplace, village, state,
country or parents seldom concern you. An Avatar or God born in any place is only a God
to us not a Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Parsee, Christian nor a Pakistani, Indian, Bangla Deshi,
or American or Russian. No single region or country has any "property rights" on HIM.

Do we ever remember names of parents of Mahatma Gandhi or Abraham Lincoln? Then

why do we want to know Sai Baba's parents? We have so many instances where God has
revealed Himself to so-called low caste devotees.

PROMISES
Believe Me, though I may pass away, My bones in My grave (Samadhi) will give you Hope
and Confidence. Not only Myself but also My Tomb (Samadhi) would be speaking and
communicating with all those who surrender themselves wholeheartedly to Me.

Do not be anxious even if I am not present here in Sagun (physical) Form. (Death: Dasara
Day, l5th October l9l8). You will hear from My Bones speaking and discussing your
welfare. But always remember Me. Believe in Me in heart and soul and then you will be
greatly benefited.

Whatever happens, never DESERT your Guru, but you should always remain at steady At-
One-Ment with Him. Always remember that your Guru's loving glance gives you
HAPPINESS.

Never try to get any Mantra from any one, but make Your Guru the sole object of your
thoughts (meditations) and actions and you will no doubt attain 'PARAMARTHA.'

Look at Me with sincere Devotion and I, in turn, look at you likewise. Sitting in this Masjid
(Sai's dwelling place), I speak the truth & nothing but the TRUTH. Have FAITH &
CONFIDENCE in your Guru and know well that He is the Sole Actor or Doer.

BLESSED is the one who knows and recognizes the Greatness of His Guru and thinks of
Him to be Hari, Hara & Brahmah Incarnate (Trinity of Gods).

PATIENCE is the mine of Virtues and Consort of Good Thoughts. FAITH (Shraddha or
Nishta) and PATIENCE (Saburi) are like the Twin Sisters loving each other very intimately.
PATIENCE can ferry you across the sea of mundane existence and can remove all sins,
afflictions and get rid of calamities in various ways, besides casting aside all fears
ultimately making for success.

There are innumerable Saints in this World but your Guru is the Real Guru, whose
Message must never be forgotten when good messages are received from other Saints.

Bhagawat Geeta (Sacred Book of Hindus) says disciple must completely surrender Body,
Mind and Wealth (possessions) to the Guru to attain self- realization.

Love your Guru with all your heart and surrender & prostrate before Him with reverence;
then there will be no sea of Mundane Existence to cross over just as there is no darkness
before the Sun.

All Sadhanas (Spiritual Practices like Tapa--penance, Yoga practices or studying sacred
scriptures) are not just enough to attain self-realisation unless accompanied by BHAKTI
(Devotion). Knowledge of Vedas or Great Jnani's reputation or mere formal Bhajan can
achieve NOTHING without a firm Devotion (Bhakti).

Do not retaliate even if someone does any evil. If you must do anything, do some good unto
others.

God lives in ALL BEINGS as well as in all Creatures, be they serpents or scorpions. He is
the Great Wire-puller of the World and all beings and creatures merely obey His
Commands.
Unless He WILLS it, no one can do any harm to anybody. The whole world is dependent on
Him and no one is independent. So take pity on or love His Creatures, leave aside
adventurous fights or killings and be patient. The Lord is the PROTECTOR of all.

One who loves Me intensely, always sees Me. To him this world is a desert without Me. I
lead him to Self-Realisation. For I am dependent on him who thinks and hungers only after
Me or who does not eat even a morsel of food without first offering it to Me. Such a sincere
devotee merges in Me like a river merging into a sea. So shake off any trace of pride or
egoism, and surrender yourself to Me, who is always seated in your heart.

Do you always remember Me before meals? Am I not ALWAYS with you? Then do you
offer Me everything before you eat?

Lord Hari would be very pleased with you if you give water to the THIRSTY, bread to the
HUNGRY, clothes to the NAKED and shelter to the STRANGER for resting. Know for
certain that one, who FEEDS the hungry, really serves Me with food. Regard this as an
ETERNAL TRUTH.

If any one wants money and you are not inclined to give, decline courteously, but do not be
cross or harsh with him or make fun of him.

DEMOLISH this wall of difference separating you from Me and the Road will be clear and
open for our meeting or union. This sense of differentiation, as thou, and I is the real
barrier keeping the Disciple away from His Master and unless it is destroyed, the state of
union or at-one-ment (attunement) cannot be attained.

God alone is the sole Protector. His Method is Unique, Extraordinary, Invaluable
and Inscrutable. His ‘WILL’ shall be done and He alone will show us the WAY to satisfy
our Heart's Desires.

It is on account of previous cordial relationship (Rhinanubandan) that we have come

together again in this life too; let us Love and serve each other and be Happy. He who
attains the Supreme Goal of Life becomes Immortal and Happy; all others merely exists in
vain!

WEALTH should be the means to work out DHARMA (spiritual goal). It is wasted if used
only for personal pleasures. Unless you have given it before, you do not expect to get it
now. So the BEST WAY to receive is to FIRST GIVE. The giving away of DAKSHINA
(donation) (or in charity) also develops non-attachment (Vairagya) and increases Bhakti &
Jnanya. Give one to receive tenfold.

Let the senses do their allotted work of seeing. By all means appreciate Beauty of God's
CREATION with a calm and steady mind. Why should one be afraid of anyone when his
heart is pure and the thoughts are free of evil? The eyes may do their work of seeing
Beauty in a woman or nature without being shy or restless. Make the mind DESIRELESS
and observe GOD'S WORKS of Beauty without fear, sin, craving or attachment!

But whatever you may do remember that you cannot escape the consequences of your
Actions (good or bad) committed either in this life itself or in your past life.

KARMA (actions) is the cause of happiness as well as SORROW too. One must therefore
bear with it. GOD is the sole just Dispenser of Justice and Protector too. Think of Him
always. He will take care of you. Totally surrender to His feet with the body, mind, wealth
and speech and then see what He does for you.

Mere READING of Spiritual Books will not be enough! The Teachings in them have to be
practiced and lived. THINK and PRACTISE what you read; otherwise it is useless. Mere
learning without the Grace of Guru is of no use.

Wealth and Prosperity are TRANSIENT and the body is subject to death and decay. While
knowing this, do your DUTY leaving all attachments to the things of this world and next.
Anyone who does this and surrenders to the sacred feet of Lord Hari (or call Him whatever
you like), will get FREEDOM from all troubles and will ATTAIN BLISS.

The Lord runs to help one who remembers Him with Love and Affection and meditates on
Him. Since your store of past Spiritual Merits was considerable, you have reached Shirdi
(Place of Salvation). But can Shirdi (God) do anything if you ignore My MESSAGE and
squander your only chance in criticizing others and looking down upon your brethren?

RAMA and RAHIM are ONE and the SAME without the slightest difference between
them. Then why should their devotees (Hindus and Muslims) quarrel amongst themselves?
Instead, the two communities must come closer and act sanely to achieve Unity. It is neither
good nor in their interest or welfare to fight, disputes, argue or emulate others.

(Lokamanya B. G. Tilak, the Father of Indian Unrest, visited Shirdi and called on Him on
May 19th, 1917 to consult Him about his future course of action in the Struggle for
Independence. He was advised to take rest.) **

SAI BABA’S ASSURANCES TO HIS DEVOTEES and SELF-REALISATION

My Method is unique. To get Self Realisation, DHYANA (meditation) is absolutely

necessary. If practiced continuously, the thought processes (Vrittis) will be calmed.
So become desireless and MEDITATE on the Lord within in all creatures. When the mind
is thus concentrated, Self-Realisation will be attained.

Always Meditate on My Formless Nirgun nature, which is Knowledge Incarnate,

Consciousness and Bliss. If you cannot do this, meditate on My Sagun (physical) Form as
you see Me here (in Shirdi) from the top to the toe (or in My Photo) every day and night.

When this is done, your thought processes (Vrittis) will become ONE POINTED and the
distinction between the Meditator (DHYATA), Meditation (DHYANA) and the object of
Meditation (DHYETA) will fade away and the Meditator will be ONE in consciousness
and will merge in SELF.

MY devotees must strive to get Lord's Grace and Blessings, instead of struggling for
necessities of life. For they will have plenty of food and clothing as I always care and
provide for Welfare of My Devotees who devoutly worships Me with their Minds ever fixed
on Me.

With the Guru's Form firmly fixed in the mind and with the Mind and Senses thus fully
absorbed in the worship (meditation) of the Lord, Me devotee must remember Me at all
times so that his MIND will not be attracted to any other mundane things like Body,
Wealth, Home or Worldly Honors nor wander elsewhere. The Mind will then become Calm,
Peaceful and Carefree, which is the sole sign of merger with the Guru. A wandering Mind
can neither merge nor get engaged in good company.
If My Leelas (Stories &Teachings) are written about or devoutly sung and attentively
listened to, Ignorance will vanish, awareness of the body will reduce and strong waves of
Devotion and Love would arise. If one ' dives' deep into My Leelas, he will discover
precious jewels of knowledge (Self Realisation).

No one truly understands what I say--My Sarkar’s Treasury (means Government, but here
it refers to Lord's treasury) is full and overflowing. I say 'dig out’ and take this wealth of
knowledge in cart loads (truck full). The blessed son of a true Mother should fill himself
with this 'wealth'.

Skill of My Fakir (GOD), the Leela (work) of My Bhagawan (God) and the attitude of My
Sarkar is quite UNIQUE. What about Me? My Body will mix with Earth, and my Breath
with the Air. I will go somewhere, and sit some place. The hard Maya still troubles Me
much. I always feel anxiety for My devotees. But one who does any Spiritual Endeavor will
surely reap its fruits and one who remembers My Words will get invaluable Peace and
Happiness.

Cholera Prevention:

It was sometime after 1910 AD there was an epidemic of cholera in Shirdi. The
administration tried everything they could to alleviate the sufferings of people. At last some
people approached Sai Baba and pleaded with him to help. The Fakir was moved. He went
to a nearby house, picked up a grinding stone and began to make preparations for grinding
wheat. He spread a sack on the floor; and thereon set a grinding stone and started grinding
the wheat by putting few handfuls of wheat. Devotees thought "What business Baba had
with the grinding of wheat, when he possessed nothing and stored nothing, and as he lived
on alms!" Immediately, this news of Baba's grinding wheat spread into the village, and at
once men and women ran to the Masjid and flocked there to see Baba's act. Four bold
women, from the crowd, forced their way up and pushing Baba aside, took forcibly the peg
or handle into their hands and singing Baba's Leelas (Divine play) started grinding. At first
Baba was enraged, but on seeing the women's love and devotion, he was much pleased and
began to smile.

While they were grinding, they began to think that Baba had no house, no property, no
children, none to look after, and he lived on alms, and therefore he did not require any
wheat-flour for making bread or roti what will he do with this big quantity of flour?
Perhaps as Baba is very kind, he will distribute the flour amongst us. Thinking in this way
while singing, they finished the grinding and after putting the hand-mill aside, they divided
the flour into four portions and took them one per head. Baba, who was calm and quiet up
till now, got wild and started abusing them saying, " Have you gone mad? Whose father's
property are you looting away? Have I borrowed any wheat from you, so that you can
safely take the flour? Now do this. Take the flour and sprinkle it on the village borders."
On hearing this, the women felt abashed and whispering amongst them, went away to the
outskirts of the village and spread the flour as directed by Baba.

CHANTING GURU'S NAME

Merely chanting or remembering Lord Hari's or Guru's Name can confer Self Realisation.

Always chant 'SAI', 'SAI', shedding all cleverness, arrogance or egoism and brazenness to
be FREE from all shackles. Only the fortunate few, free from blemish, take seriously to My
Worship. Even if you merely chant 'SAI', 'SAI', I shall take you across the ocean. For I
always drag My Devotee towards Me from far off places, or even across the seven seas like
a sparrow heading to its nest with a string tied to its feet. Believe these words and you will
certainly be benefited. My Worship needs no elaborate rituals like SADHANAS (Spiritual
Practices). I only rest where there is full devotion and love.

Even if you merely utter My Name with Love, I shall fulfill all your wishes and increase
your devotion. But if you earnestly sing about My Leelas & Deeds or spread My
MESSAGE, you will merge in My Grace. Have Patience (Saburi) & Faith (Shraddha) in
Me.

While attending to your worldly duties daily, the mind should THINK of the Sadguru and
His Leelas and be blessed by Him.

If the devotee has sincere complete Faith in Me, his Mind will MERGE with the Supreme
Conscious. Even mere chanting of My Name as ‘Sai’ will do away with the sins of speech
and hearing. It will remove FEAR of the worldly existence and will lead you to the
spiritual path regardless of your caste, creed, or class.

Without God's Grace, there is no desire or even urge to listen to the Saint's stories. But
with God's Grace everything is smooth and easy. Hearing these stories, one keeps company
of the Saints that helps one become less conscious of one's body or its problems. It cuts
asunder all attachments, destroying cycles of births and deaths and lifts one up to God who
is pure Consciousness. In turn, detachment to the sense objects is increased, which makes
one indifferent to the Pleasure or Pain and leads to Spiritual Path.

If you take refuge in the Saints without any reservations, you will be carried off safely
across the Ocean of Worldly Existence.

My sincere devotees shall always be saved or pulled out even from the jaws of Death. I run
to help My Devotees in times of danger. All diseases shall vanish when My Leelas (Stories &
Teachings) are listened to respectfully, assimilated and meditated upon.
