EFFECTS: High temperatures are going to force us to hydrate more often and may hinder our rate of march. The illumination tonight works in our favor because it will facilitate our movement to the patrol base. It will hinder the enemy because they have limited night vision capabilities. TERRAIN ANALYSIS: (ZONE C) a. Obstacles- Hollis Creek, Hollis Branch Creek, and the network of man made roads (Red Diamond Road, Cyclone Road, Old Gap Road, HWY 137 and HWY 355) are obstacles that will severely hinder dismounted movement along certain avenues of approach throughout Zone C. Hollis Branch Creek (Beaver Pond) in the vicinity of Cyclone Road becomes a swamp that is severely restrictive for dismounted forces. There are a significant number of washouts north of HWY 137 that are not depicted on the map. b. Avenues of Approach- Zone C has 5 major avenues of approach for dismounted and mounted forces: they are Red Diamond Road, Cyclone Road, Old Gap Road, HWY 137 and HWY 355. The highways are paved 2 lane roads that can sustain column formations at 50 MPH. The other avenues of approach are improved dirt roads that can sustain column formations at 30 MPH. Additionally, there are several unnamed trails running along spurs from Red Diamond Road that can sustain small vehicular traffic (truck/ SUVs) movement up to 10 MPH. Zone C is generally unrestrictive to dismounted forces. c. Key Terrain- The intersection of Red Diamond Road and Cyclone Road is key terrain because it controls two major avenues of approach into Zone C. Additionally, this location contains a suitable HLZ. The high ground in the vicinity of GA 170 792 is key terrain because it provides excellent observation of Cyclone

Road and the general AO. HLZs Hollis (GA 1666 7964) and Mosby (GA 1678 8016) are key terrain because control of these areas facilitates air movement operations. d. Observations and Fields of Fire- Zone C is densely vegetated and allows for observations and fields of fire of approximately 50 meters. In the low ground, the vegetation thickens and reduces observation and fields of fire to about 20 meters. The high ground and open areas, along roads, allow maximum observation and fields of fire to a maximum distance of 300 meters. e. Cover and concealment- The larger pine trees in the zone provide adequate cover from small arms fire. The forests will not provide cover from indirect fires. The low ground and network of wadis and washouts provides excellent concealment while the higher ground offers less. *Map x1, OBTF- Only trace and familiarize Zone C (the zone the squad will be working in). Point out all items that were in the terrain analysis for each section of OAKOC. Have the students place them on the map board and mark them for you.* 1. SITUATION a. Enemy Forces (1) Disposition, Composition, Strength Intelligence activities have determined the location of suspected Aragon Liberation Forces, (ALF), mortar sites, ADA sites, communication nodes, and numerous logistical re-supply points in Zones A, B and C. The ALF have established a strong presence north of Highway 137. Platoons in the 1st ALF are composed of three squads and a Platoon Leader. The squad is broken down into 2 teams and a Squad Leader. The ALF platoon has at least one machine gun per squad and one mortar section with 2 or 3 mortars to support each platoon. The ALF is armed with a mixture of Soviet and U.S. weapons and equipment. They may use M-4s, M-14s, M-16s, M-203s, AKMS assault rifles, AK-47s, SVD Sniper Rifles, the M-60 Machine Gun, and RPG-7s. The 1st ALF wears a uniform consisting of U.S. style desert BDUs. Disposition, Composition, and Strength: You are likely to encounter a ALF team armed with a mixture of light Soviet and U.S. weapons. The enemy is not expected to have any machine guns or crew served weapons. The ALF forces are currently at 90% strength. Platoons in the ALF include approximately 22-25 men. A typical ALF squad will be 7-9 men. ALF teams will be 2-4 men. On your recon sites, you are likely to encounter a typical ALF team of 2-4 men. (2) Recent Activities: ALF forces have been conducting harassment operations throughout AO Darby. They have ambushed several Aragon Civil Defense Corps (ACDC) patrols at GA151805. They have also conducted two mortar attacks on friendly forces at GA 15408051 and GA 14028073. In addition, the enemy has established a suspected supply route along road vic. GA 17298164. Enemy forces have been ambushing friendly convoys along Red Diamond Road and Cyclone Road. They have been firing at passing convoys

and executed a squad sized ambush on an ACDC re-supply convoy at GA167816.

Known/Suspected Locations and Capabilities: The ALF have established a strong presence north of Highway 137. ALF forces have established a suspected transportation site vic GA 17298164, a suspected ADA site vic GA 19208139, and a suspected supply route along Cactus road vic GA 1782.

*Have the students place all grids on the map board and point them out* (a) Maneuver 1. Vehicles The ALF has limited truck assets to conduct logistical operations and to move troops throughout the area of operations. 2. Reserves The ALF can reinforce any threatened location with a platoon-size element within 10-15 minutes of an attack by friendly forces. (b) Fire Support by type 1. Artillery none 2. Mortars 82mm mortar section of 2 to 3 tubes provide all indirect fire support. 3. CAS none (c) Air Defense: Organic ADA weapons include the following: the shoulder fired SA-7s, the towed ZPU-4 which has four 23mm cannons and is mounted on a four-wheel carriage, the ZPU-2 which has twin 23mm cannons and is mounted on a two-wheeled carriage, and the ZPU-1 which has a single 23mm cannon and is mounted on a two wheel trailer; then unloaded to fire. (d) Communications: FM communications is limited to small, High Frequency manpacks, and distributed one per squad. The enemy makes frequent use of messengers. The ALF has jamming capabilities. (e) Night Vision Equipment: The ALF forces have limited Night Vision capabilities one set of NVGs per team. (f) Logistics: CSS operations are generally conducted by extensive use of platoon and squad caches. Caches can contain all classes of supply, but are typically limited to CL I and CL V. The ALF may also use truck assets to conduct logistical operations.
(4)

Most Likely Course of Action / Most Dangerous Course of Action Most Likely Course of Action: Most of the ALF elements operating in our AO will continue to conduct dismounted team and squad level patrols. If they can locate key targets in the area, they will report the locations and attempt to engage with indirect and sniper fire. In the event that ALF elements make contact, they will break contact with the help of mortars. Most Dangerous Course of Action: The 1st ALF masses to platoon strength in order to conduct aggressive ambushes to destroy TF Ranger elements in

AO Darby. Additionally, the ALF seizes control of the primary road networks in AO Darby. This will enable the ALF to quickly mass and counterattack against TF Ranger elements and to relocate its equipment and supplies quickly. b.
