SR1 Residents and organizations donated 31 coats and jackets to this effort last year! We can do it again! Just go through your closet and weed out those gently used but outgrown jackets, that winter coat you NEVER wear, anything extra just taking up space. You may not know who they are, but SOMEONE out there will be grateful for any jacket or coat you give them! To make a donation as part of our drive, please call 510-274-1771 and leave a message or e-mail president@spanishranch1.org to request a pickup of your donation. Donations may also be dropped off at the office or at the Bingo snack bar on Bingo Saturdays. Just tell them what its for.

MANAGERS CORNER
The summer has passed, Halloween is passed and the rainy winter is close at hand. The pool was closed on the 31st of October. The hot tub is open and heated throughout the year. Regarding the spa usage: A maximum of six (6) persons are allowed in the spa at one time. You must wear approved manufactured swim wear. No undergarments are allowed. Shower before entering the pool or the hot tub. Remember, the use of Spanish Ranch property is strictly for the use of Spanish Ranch residents. This would also pertain to passage through the park via the rear gate. The management is spending a great deal of money on a quarterly basis due to misuse of the rear gate. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THE GATE ACCESS CODE TO ANYONE THAT IS NOT A RESIDENT!! People who do not live here are not likely to treat your property like you. I personally have witnessed people showing the code to individuals that are not residents. Violators of the 15 mile per hour speed limit still abound within Spanish Ranch. All those that are speeding are not only guestsplease pay attention to your speed. This is a close community and we live close to each other. Please show respect to your neighbors by NOT sounding your horn at inopportune times (late at night or early in the morning). Please turn your radio down when entering your community. Everyone may not appreciate the sound of your new 150 Watt double bass speakers as much as you do. Calendar Note: The annual Spanish Ranch #1 Holiday brunch is scheduled for Sunday December 11, 2011. Mark your calendars for another great time this year! Energy Tip: Now that the heating season is almost upon us, it is time to change your heater filters and purchase enough to last through the heating season (three or four should be sufficient) if one changes the filters every thirty to fortyfive days. Guillermos Corner Resident parking in Visitor parking areas still is a problem. The reason Guillermo mentions this is that a few weekends ago there was a function at the club house and there was no parking available for those who had reserved the clubhouse for their activity. Residents that regularly use visitor parking to park their extra cars are not only in violation of the Rule(s) and Regulation(s) of Spanish Ranch #1 MHP but are being very inconsiderate to their neighbors. Guillermo says Thanks for all the help in the car wash areas. The trash situation at the car wash areas appears to be improving and is almost back to normal. Guillermo would also like to remind everyone to continue to sweep and pick up the leaves in front of your home at least once a week. The gutter area in front of your home is your responsibility. Please be considerate and pick up the leaves and not simply sweep them down in front of your neighbors home. Be sure to clean up the gutter ramps at your driveway. Your help will insure that our storm drains are working properly and that large lakes do not form at the storm drain inlets. Guillermo also says Thanks for all of you that are monitoring the street lights and reporting them to the office. Keep up the good work as he continues to make Spanish Ranch a safe place to walk after dark or on those dreary and dark days. We would like to wish all the residents of Spanish Ranch #1 MHP a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. We do have so much to be thankful and that in comparison of the rest of the world, we here at Spanish Ranch are the top Ten percent of the worlds richest people. Jeff Stoops, Asst manager

The Pirate
A sailor meets a pirate in a bar, and they take turns recounting their adventures at sea. Noting the pirates peg-leg, hook, and eye patch, the sailor asks, So, how did you end up with the peg-leg? The pirate replies We was caught in a monster storm off the cape and a giant wave swept me overboard. Just as they were pullin me out, a school of sharks appeared and one of em bit me leg off. Blimey! said the sailor. What about the hook? Ahhhh..., mused the pirate, We were boardin a trader ship, pistols blastin and swords swingin this way and that. In the fracas me hand got chopped off. Zounds! remarked the sailor. And how came ye by the eye patch? A seagull droppin fell into me eye, answered the pirate. You lost your eye to a seagull dropping? the sailor asked incredulously. Well... said the pirate,it was me first day with the hook.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
510-784-1008

An optimist sees the best in the world, while a pessimist sees only the worst. An optimist finds the positive in the negative, and a pessimist can only find the negative in the positive. For example, an avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck. Shocked by his find, he was sure none of his friends would ever believe him. He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog. As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by. They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet. This continued all day long; each time a duck fell, the dog walked across the surface of the water to retrieve it. The pessimist watched carefully, saw everything, but did not say a single word. On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, Did you notice anything unusual about my new dog? I sure did, responded the pessimist. He cant swim.

sponsored by the SR1 Association and NERT

Come learn about and discuss

Where is the safest place in your home to ride out an earthquake?

Hint: Its not the doorway.

Will the support system on your mobilehome survive a seismic event?

Well show you what to look for.

We have checklists and information, plus common sense suggestions like stocking up on food you like and rotating that supply, instead of investing in survival packs that expire. Elderly or live alone? Do you have medical needs such as oxygen? Are there language barriers? Come and register so first responders know to come check on you.

Do you have enough basic supplies to sustain your family?

Do you have special needs that we can help you prepare for?

Your input and ideas are invited!

It is important that you take individual responsibility for your own welfare!
The City of Hayward, the County of Alameda and the State of California all have comprehensive disaster plans in place, but they may not be able to respond to individuals in the event of a major event. We have to be ready to take care of ourselves, check on our neighbors and help each other.

Come and get information about how to be prepared, as well as information about the parks disaster plan as a whole, Please come and be a part of this effort! Stop by and pick up printed material and talk with our recent CERT graduates and other volunteers. Help us help you! If you have questions, check your El Toro and call NERT or any member of the Board. 7

Free News from your Hayward Fire Department and the International Association of Fire Chiefs

Change Your Clock Change Your Battery Sunday, November 6

For 24 years, the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery program has urged Americans to change smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries when changing clocks back to Standard Time each fall. Again, this fire safety campaign is sponsored by the Hayward Fire department and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. While it may seem like a simple and easy habit to remember, 20 percent of homes in the United States do not have a working smoke alarm. This year, the fall time change takes place on Sunday, November 6. The fall program has evolved over time to incorporate the changing of carbon monoxide detector batteries during the time change as well. An early warning can provide critical extra seconds to escape, smoke alarms double your familys chance of getting out of a home fire alive but only if they work: Somewhere in the nation, a home fire death occurs approximately every three hours. The peak time for home fire fatalities is between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep Smoke alarms most often fail because of missing, dead or disconnected batteries In addition to changing smoke alarm and carbon monoxide batteries, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years Smoke alarm maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Vacuum and remove any dust or spider webs along with monthly testing Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape Fire deaths peak in winter months December through February. Smoking materials (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc.) and poorly installed, poorly maintained or misused portable or area heating equipment are leading causes of fatal home fires. In addition, candle usage during power outages can contribute to home fires Eighty-three percent of all civilian fire-related deaths are a result of home fires, and on average, home fires kill 540 children ages 14 and under each year. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas found in combustion fumes. People and animals that come in contact with these fumes can be poisoned by breathing in the gas. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include: headache, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion. Hayward Fire Department encourages families to take the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery message one step further, by adopting the lifesaving habit of changing carbon monoxide detector batteries at the same time. Please forward this message to your friends and family so that they, too, can make the simple change that could save their lives.

Minutes of the SR1 Board Meeting 10/13/2011

Meetings of the elected Spanish Ranch I Executive Board are held on the first Thursday of each month (unless otherwise announced) at 7:00 p.m. in the main clubhouse. ALL residents are welcome to attend!
The Meeting of Spanish Ranch 1 Association was called to order at 7 p.m. by Secretary Jeanie Schultz, in the absence of the president Dawn and vice president Judy who were out of town. Ruth was sick, Jerry excused and Marvin was absent. Clint Dean was accepted as a new member of the board to replace Kathi Calvert. The minutes of the September meeting were approved. The Treasurers report from Peggy Nichols showed a balance of $732.93 though a check for $29 to the Secretary of State is expected to be voided, bringing the balance to $761.93. An earlier check to the Secretary of State for the annual information statement for $8 cleared and Judy was paid $40 for printing of Craft Fair flyers. Disaster Committee chair Stacia Higman attended to update the board on developments in the parks disaster arrangements. She had discussed the location of disaster supplies with park manager Teresa Cruz. She was initially told the park needed more storage space for their equipment in the wooden outbuildings are the end of the defunct shuffleboard courts but Teresa says now theyre utilizing an area of the small clubhouse. The outbuilding, used by the Disaster Committee on one side with maintenance equipment stored on the other side, are in need of a new roof, and management hopes to get this into next years budget. Park owner Rutherford, after multiple requests, finally provided the Emergency Preparedness Plan required by law of all mobilehome parks, in August. Since the copy provided indicated it was adopted in 2007, Stacia has inquired if there is a later version. Two meetings of the joint Disaster Committee/NERT have been held, mainly informational and intended to sign up people to be part of the Disaster Committee. The next Emergency Preparedness meeting will be Tuesday, November 8. Neighborhood Watch usually has this date but their meeting has been announced for November 15. The metal storage container in the back of the parks storage area which was used for a time to store Disaster Committee supplies was broken into the end of September. The hasp holding the padlock was cut off by persons unknown. Disaster supplies were moved some years ago to the building near the main clubhouse so only barrels of nonpotable water and some cots were still stored there. Apparently nothing was taken. Clint Dean reported checking the space after the break-in to make sure that some of the homeless people often seen camping and hanging around in the watershed on the other side of the parks boundary fence had not taken up residence. borhood. Relief manager Kenny will be handling the table and is looking for help. A flyer explaining trick-or-treating rules and intended to be clipped to the mailbox will be distributed next week. Craft Fair: Patty Little reported that about half the tables have been sold. It was decided to expand the scope somewhat to allow new items suitable for gifts to be included on tables that also have handicrafts. A flyer will go out to the community when Judy gets back.

New Business
Regional Manager Greg OHagan has asked to speak with the board about plans Rutherford has for the park but so far he hasnt been free on board meeting nights. Several dates were agreed upon to offer him for a meeting independent of the regular meeting. Barbara Sacks brought an appeal from the South Hayward Parish Executive Director Betty DeForest describing the serious funding cuts the organization has suffered. The current charity drive of toiletries for the homeless and supplies for women and children in shelters is being donated to the South Hayward Parish which targets our specific area as part of HaywardCAN. Ms. DeForest will be invited to speak to the board at a future meeting to help us understand how this organization provides service to our park and community, and how we can help. Barbara also put forward an idea for a future event that we could offer to the community. Dejunking with Donna, a program outlining ways to help you get rid of clutter and junk, has been presented in other communities to positive review. Nobody present could claim to have no unused, unwanted, unnecessary stuff, i.e., junk, and it was thought this might appeal to the community at large. We will try to arrange this program for January 10 or February 7, 2012, depending on the availability of the presenter.
