The senator, Katia Abreu, quoted by the Bloomberg news agency, is president of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock. She is reported to have said there would be a brutal reduction in the countrys food production. ************************************************ AUSTRALIAN FORESTRY HOPES FOR COMMON SENSE OVER NATIVE WOOD BIOFUEL That forestry really is for the optimistic is illustrated in a recent statement from the Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA) and NSW Forest Products Association (FPA). The two groups say they are hopeful common sense will prevail over the use of native forest woody biomass for green energy and its eligibility for renewable energy certificates under the national renewable energy target scheme. They say it is estimated there is enough woody biomass from forest industry activities in Australia to supply 3000 gigawatt hours of renewable energy per year from existing waste streams without harvesting a single extra tree. However, the recent proposal by the Australian

Government to amend the existing regulations to exclude biomass from native forest as an eligible renewable energy resource will significantly jeopardise planned investments and innovation in green energy projects across the country, the statement said. ************************************************ NEW ZEALAND FORESTRY URGES INDUSTRIES TO UTILISE WOOD RESIDUES FOR ENERGY Meanwhile, New Zealand forest owners are urging major industries, hotels, hospitals and large schools in the central North Island to seriously consider forest residues as an energy source. The call comes in the wake of the rupture of the northern pipeline from the Maui gas field, which left businesses struggling for energy supplies. The government and Fonterra, the NZ-based world-leading dairy producer, are carrying out post-mortems on the security of energy supplies. Fonterra says it will be looking at all its options after 15 of its northern milk processing plants had to shut down because of the gas outage. NZ Forest Owners Association senior policy analyst Glen Mackie said in a statement that vast quantities of forest residue, including branches, reject logs and stumps are available a by-product of the normal forest harvesting cycle. ************************************************ CHILE SPENDING US$2B ON SMALL & MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN 2012 Chiles Production Development Corporation (Corfo in Spanish) has increased its budget by 10% to more than US$2 billion in order to focus on financial help for micro, small and medium sized companies. La Nacion reported Corfo executive vice-president Hernn Cheyre as saying it was hoped to boost the number of small and medium enterprises by as much as 10,000 to lift total numbers in Chile to 120,000. ************************************************ EXIT GRANTS FOR TASMANIAN FOREST CONTRACTORS NOW OPEN Meanwhile, guidelines for the Australian Government-funded A$45 million Tasmanian Forest Contractors Voluntary Exit Grants are now available online. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, said in a statement the package, developed in consultation with the Tasmanian Government and forest contractor associations, offers grants to assist Tasmanias public native forest sector to adjust to the industry downturn and the reduced scale of native forest harvesting. ************************************************ SAS ZUMPA PUSHES FOR CURRENCY HELP Currency issues continue to plague many countries in the southern hemisphere. South Africas President Jacob Zuma is pushing for improved measures to curb currency volatility when he attends the Group of 20 summit in France, Business Day reported. This follows an earlier move by Argentina to force some kind of stability in trading.

************************************************ EXTREME WEATHER ON CLIMATE CHANGE OUTLOOK FOR TASMANIA Tasmania can expect fewer cold snaps, and longer spells of hot weather in the future as Australia's climate changes, the ABC has reported. The latest report released by the Climate Futures for Tasmania project examined the intensity and the frequency of extreme weather events within the state, the story said. Lead author of the report Dr Chris White says while there are broad trends, some regions of the state will see more weather extremes than others. ************************************************ UNDERSTANDING FOREST CARBON A better understanding of forest carbon is a key element in an action plan to reduce emissions in the Australian state of Tasmania. Studies have found the way Australia currently accounts for emissions and carbon storage in forests is incomplete and inaccurate. To gain a better understanding of the issues involved, the Tasmanian Government is undertaking a A$250,000 Forest Carbon Study, a statement said. ************************************************ HARVESTING INNOVATIONS COULD DOUBLE NZ FOREST OUTPUT Innovations in harvesting trees on steep slopes have could double the size of commercial forestry in New Zealand, says the Future Forest Researchs 2011 Annual Science Report. The report outlines improvements in harvesting techniques and equipment to increase productivity, improve safety and cut costs. Cheaper and more effective methods of harvesting trees on New Zealands steep country are vital if the forest industry is to remain internationally competitive and to grow, a statement on the report says. ************************************************ FORESTRY AND DAIRY CAN WORK IN BALANCE - URUGUAY Uruguays Agriculture Ministry believes the forestry and dairy sectors will be able to achieve a balance. Daniel Garin, the sub-secretary of Beef, Agriculture and Fishing, made the comment in response to concerns were raised by the Rural Association of San Jos. He said it was necessary for separate sectors to ensure the development of the country takes advantage of other productive activities. ************************************************ FIRE IN TIERRA DEL FUEGO FOREST Forest fires in Argentinas extreme southern province of Tierra del Fuego extreme south spread across from 50 hectares of trees to 1,500 hectares of grazing land, Mercopress reported via the Buenos Aires Herald. The report quoted provincial officials as saying that teams of firemen, police, and Civilian

Defence were working at the scene to try to control the flames which -according to a communiqu released by the provincial government- even though they had reached the urban area, they are still a significant way away from the inhabited area. ************************************************ FIREFIGHTERS RAISING CONCERNS OVER FORESTRY PRIVATISATION As the south eastern Australian region braces itself for another summer of deadly forest fires, concerns from volunteer firefighters will go to a parliamentary committee investigating the planned sale of government timber harvesting rights. The ABC has reported the Country Fire Service (CFS) Volunteers Association and consulting firm ACIL Tasman will give evidence to the committee in Adelaide. Committee chairman and Family First MLC, Robert Brokenshire, says the CFS volunteers are worried privatisation of forests in South Australia will heighten the fire danger. ************************************************ FAILURE OF BILL TO CLEAR DEFORESTATION CULPRITS COULD COST BRAZIL US$100B IN AG OUTPUT SENATOR CLAIMS Brazil stands to lose as much as US$100 billion in agricultural output should its senate reject legislation clearing farmers who illegally cleared protected rainforest, a senator has claimed. She is reported to have said there would be a brutal reduction in the countrys food production. ************************************************ CRIKEY - GUNNS STILL WORKING FLAT STICK ON TASMANIAN PULP MILL JV PLAN While mainstream Australian media have flagged Gunns Ltds plans for a A$2.3 billion pulp plant in Tasmania, insiders are reporting the company believes approval is inevitable. A report on crikey.com.au this week has revealed at least 20 trucks and 50 workers at the site on enormous earth works exercises. There is a sense of inevitability on site the [the pulp mill] will ultimately be delivered. Its reported that Gunns CEO Greg LEstrange is offshore negotiating a joint venture but is aiming to have details released in time for an extensive discussion at the companys AGM.on 24 November in Melbourne. ************************************************ WOOD PROMOTED AS THE GREEN ANSWER TO THE EARTHQUAKE RED ZONE NZ Wood the promotional arm of the Wood Council of New Zealand is launching a campaign to encourage the use of structural timber in multi-storey and high-rise buildings for the reconstruction of earthquake hit Christchurch.
