TOTAL FIGURES

78th Fraser Highlanders commenced the 1758 campaign with 14 companies of 100 rank & file, 44 officers, 40 NCOs, 20 drummers with larger than average company strengths. Grenadier companies at battle strength are calculated from the campaign battalion strength due to practice of reinforcement from the Line with a standard minimum of 81 70 rank & file, company officer, 3 sergeants, 2 corporals, 2 drummers and 2 fifers. The presence of all grenadiers is covered in my Order of Battle document. * The divergence between campaign strengths and the field strengths clearly indicates a much reduced battalion presence. Taken with the fact the entire army was not able to be landed in the first (and only) wave, I reasoned that the numbers would have constituted whole companies where possible. To represent this, I have taken the campaign strength of each battalion minus the full strength grenadier company (81) then divided the reduced campaign strength total by nine (9) being the remaining number of companies (8 line and 1 light) to derive each battalions campaign company strength. I have then divided the field strength of the battalion (minus grenadiers) by the company strength to determine the number of companies represented, including remnants. This then allows a reasonable estimation of the number of officers and NCOs present for a 1:9 calculation for representation on the table top each company having three (3) Officers, three (3) Sergeants and three (3) corporals. Only Sergeants are represented for NCOs in my figure purchase calculations as Corporals did not significantly differ from rank and file musketeers for sculpting purposes but will be accorded attention when painting. ** Light infantry do not form a part of the battalion totals but those present are calculated toward the detached light infantry battalion.

Note: Exceptions for Officer and Sergeant calculations include the 78th with 14 companies, the Louisburg Grenadiers (taken as three companies) and the Light Infantry Dallings being of a different structure and the Detached Light Infantry having officers from the three parent companies (78th, 28th and 2/60th). Figure calculations (1:9) include a breakdown of Officers (Off), Sergeants (Sgt), Ensigns or flag bearers (Ens) and Musicians (Ms). Line and Gren are the musketeer rank and file. The first numbers represent line Officers and Sergeants and the second number grenadier Officers and Sergeants (which are a constant). There is an additional line officer in every battalion which is the colonel. I have elected to represent all battalion drummers as line drummers and the second musician is a grenadier fifer with the exception of the Louisburg Grenadiers who will be all grenadiers. # The separate figures for light infantry represent the permanent light infantry uniforms of Dallings Light as opposed to the detached light companies which will be represented by skirmishing line infantry. The second figure for grenadiers represents the different appearance of the highland grenadiers. Line musketeer totals do not include the eight (8) line artillery crew figures. The artillery are considered independent field pieces or battalion guns, are not grouped in a battery and have no officer.
