November 2011
FROM THE PASTORS DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: I want to thank God and thank you for your commitment of time, talent and treasure as we are doing our Centennial year Stewardship Emphasis for 2012. As you know, our Stewardship Way of Life for Jesus Christ is the means to the goal of sharing the Gospel of our Lord Jesus with those people who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior, Lord and Friend! Again, I thank God for your love, service, cooperation and prayers for 2012! * * * * * * WORSHIP ATTENDANCE IN SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER 2011

Also, with the month of November comes one of our great national holidaysThanksgiving. For we who are Christians, giving thanks to God for our blessings in this life and the life to come should be reflexive. Remember Pauls words in I Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Yours for Living in His Presence: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow! Pastor Clark Rev. Clark Sawyer

In Pauls letter to the Hebrews, the writer says to us: Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. The habit of being together in worship and study, fellowship, service and outreach is important! See you at our gatherings!

This man is a former member of Hill Church and asked through Joan Gregg if we could mail him some of our Centennial bulletin inserts. Mr. Stetzer currently lives in Florida. -Clark Sawyer Dear Rev. Sawyer: Thank you so much for the Church history. I am an older member. Played baseball in the Church League in 1935. Harry Hulton in charge. Rev. Gamble signed my attendance record. Had to go 3 Sunday nights, but saw my first lovely wife two rows in front of me and I was a Presbyterian. Left in 1984 when I lost my wife. So good to read about old friends. Particularly about the Communion set donated by the Montgomerys. They were a wonderful family + daughter Aline my favorite school teacher. Ihlenfelds were great friends when I served as Deacon. I am 92 now and have been in Florida since 1985. Thanks again Vernon Stetzer

THE PONY EXPRESS RIDES AGAIN!

GHANA MISSION COMMITTEE

Last month the Ghana Mission Committee reported that $4400 was recently sent to the Bubiashie Scholarship Committee for distribution to young women who have been chosen to pursue their education. Very recently, the Chairperson of the Bubiashie committee wrote to say that 22 young women had been chosen for this years scholarships. Mr. Daddy said that the committee would send us further information concerning the awardees. Again, the Hill committee expresses gratitude to those who have contributed to this forward thinking mission project. This is a gift for the future of Ghana. Education will never wear out. Your act of kindness will help ensure the future for several young women and give them hope for tomorrow. With the Christmas season approaching, in early November our committee will be setting out Christmas greeting cards for you to send to persons in the Bubiashie District. Please participate in this exchange of friendship. The Ghanaians value the correspondence from any of us. We continue to request your continuing prayers for our Christian friends in the Bubiashie District churches. Jim Ihlenfeld for The Ghana Mission Committee

By now, members of the Hill Church Family of Faith should have received our 2012 stewardship message either by mail or Pony Express delivery. Our message comes from II Corinthians 9:7&10 and reads: You will be enriched in every way for

your great generosity of time, talent and treasure, for God loves a cheerful giver. As of
October 31, 2011 79 members and friends of Hill Church have estimated that they can give $154,252 in support of the work done by our Church. If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the work of Hill Church through the sharing of your time, talent and treasure. Once you have decided how to support the mission and ministries of Hill Church, please complete the Estimate of Giving form that came with your message and return it in the envelope provided. You may return your Estimate of Giving form by mailing it to the Church office or placing it in the offering plate during worship. If you have misplaced your Estimate of Giving form, one has been included with this newsletter for your convenience in responding. During the next two months, the Session will continue our stewardship emphasis and use the Estimate of Giving total to prepare the 2012 Hill Church budget. We are hopeful that even in these tough economic times our Family of Faith will continue to share their time, talent and treasure for the building and uplifting of Gods kingdom now and in the future. Thank you for being cheerful givers and supporting the ministries and mission of Hill Church.

PLEASE HELP THE CHURCH BY RECYCLING YOUR BULLETIN INSERTS! Simply place the inserts that you do not need in the box beside the food barrel in the Overflow area after worship. Many inserts can be reused from week to week.

HELPING COVENANT CUPBOARD

Covenant Cupboard has been helping needy people in the Butler community for more than three decades. This service - collecting, h a u l i n g , s o r t i n g, s t o c k i n g , distributing food - has been possible because of numerous dedicated volunteers. Many of these volunteers have served for many years. A number of our volunteers are over 80 years old. As these older volunteers retire, we need to encourage new volunteers to take their places. Do you know of people who would be willing to: Give two hours every month to distribute food? Give two hours once a month to haul & sort food? Please ask friends and acquaintances if they are willing to help Covenant Cupboard. Thank you, David C. Blewett, Manager 724-287-0169 or azurite@zoominternet.net

HARVEST HOME 2011

It is that time of year when the Deacons will be collecting food for the community for the Thanksgiving season. The food will be distributed through Covenant Cupboard in time for the November holiday. For three weeks food will be collected in the southeast corner of the sanctuary near the organ. The following are suggestions of food items by weeksthough it's not a strict guideline, just a suggestion. It is the Deacons hope that our congregation will continue to be generous in bringing in food items and/or money donations to support our Harvest Home Project, and as a result, benefit Covenant Cupboard. Oct 29-30: Canned and jarred foods; vegetables, fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce, tuna, salmon, peanut butter, beef stew, pumpkin. November 5-6: Boxed and bagged food; flour, sugar, mac and cheese, pancake mix, cereals, rice, cake mixes, pie mixes, crackers. November 12-13: Three-pound bags of apples and five pound bags of potatoes which require the least cold storage time. Other fresh vegetables and fruits cannot be collected due to the lack of cold storage areas.

ITS SHOEBOX TIME!

Our Church will once again be collecting filled shoeboxes for girls and boys for Operation Christmas Child. We will have more information in an upcoming Church bulletin insert about ideas for filling the shoeboxes with goodies for needy children, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. All shoe boxes need to be collected on or before November 13th to make sure that the children receive them in time for Christmas. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary donations.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR UPCOMING WORKDAYS

The Administration Committee needs volunteers to assist in removing and replacing the old ceiling tiles in the Fellowship Hall. Work starts at 10:00am on November 21 through Wednesday, November 23. If you are able to help with this project, please let a member of the committee know. Lunch will be provided.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

Thanks to all who are volunteering at our Fall Kids Club! Our last session for Fall is on November 9th, 2011. The Spring session of Kids Club will begin on February 1st, 2012.

LETTER TO INCLUDE IN YOUR OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world. Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to poor children around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of Gods love. You can share Gods love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country by participating with other members of our church. You can start by filling out and coloring the enclosed letter to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your shoebox to go to a boy or girl and what age group for which you would like to buy. Wrap the lid and the bottom of your shoebox in colorful Christmas paper, and look for a brochure in church or visit the website www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for gift ideas to fill your box. Don't forget to bring your shoe box gift to church on or before November 13th, 2011. What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!
