Founded in July 2008, the
Sergeant Clint Ferrin Dental
Clinic provides free dental
care to local veterans of the
United States
Military.

To qualify, the veteran must make
less than $25,000 a year and cannot
qualify to receive dental care through
existing Veterans Administration
funding.
A former UNLV dental student
established this clinic in memory of his
brother, Sergeant Clint Ferrin, who
was killed in Iraq while serving our
country. With his experience in mind,
this clinic was established to restore
function to those that have served.
The clinic is completely student
organized and supervised by
volunteer UNVL faculty alongside
local ADA volunteer dentists.
The dental school provides the
facility and a portion of the required
materials. With the cooperation of
the students, faculty, school, and
community, the clinic is able to
provide these low-income veterans
services that range from single visit
restorations to comprehensive
prosthodontics.
To date, the Sgt. Clint Ferrin
Dental Clinic has been able to serve
451 veterans and provide $258,730
worth of treatment.
Treatment clinics are held from
8:00 am to noon on Saturdays. During
this time, the volunteer student
operator aims to fully address the
chief complaint of the veteran in need.
At each clinic an average of 35
patients are treated by volunteer
student dentists. During these clinics,
students gain experience and credit

and current patients include veterans from every war with US involvement
since WWII.
The Sgt. Clint Ferrin Dental Clinic has found that the demand for
its services is vast as it is currently receiving over 100 applications a month.
The clinic is looking to start up branches at other dental schools across the
country to help meet the demand for its services. For more information on
how you can start a branch at your school please visit our website at

How do we Advocate these Issues?
The ASDA Legislative Grassroots
Network (LGN) is dedicated to
increasing dental student
understanding and involvement in the
legislative process, both locally and nationally. Leaders
involved in the ASDA LGN work to educate ASDA
members, dental organizations and legislators about issues
important to dental students. The LGN provides students with
the information they need on matters concerning dentistry and
other health issues. Any student who wants to play a role in
shaping the legislative decisions that determine the future of
dentistry is encouraged to join the ASDA LGN.
For more information contact Sally Ortega (sortega@atsu.edu)
the District 10 Legislative Liaison
Lunch and Learns: YES!
We encourage the administrators of all U.S. accredited
dental schools to grant ASDA leaders the autonomy to
select and invite dental supply companies and speakers
to visit their school in order to heighten their knowledge
and broaden their exposure to dental products prior to
venturing into dental practice.
Amalgam: SAFE!
Based on available scientic data, the continued use of
amalgam as a restorative material does not pose a health
hazard to the nonallergic patient. The removal of
clinically serviceable dental amalgam restorations solely
to substitute a material that does not contain mercury is
unwarranted, improper, unethical and intentional
misrepresentation to the patient.
Midlevel Providers: Depends
ASDA endorses expanded functions for dental auxiliaries
only when each has received the appropriate education
and training to guarantee competence, and when such
functions fall within the laws established by their
respective state of employment.
only a qualied dentist should perform the following
functions, including but not limited to:
a. Examination, diagnosis and treatment planning
b. Prescribing work authorizations
c. Performing irreversible dental procedures
d. Prescribing drugs and/or other medications
What would ASDA Do? Official Positions on the Issues
Each issue we will explore a few of the hot topics that everyone is talking about and explain what ASDAs position is.
Outreach Programs: KNOW THE RULES!
B-8 Dental Outreach Programs
Students in U.S. dental schools and predental programs who
participate in a dental outreach program (e.g., international
service trips, domestic service trips, volunteerism in
underserved areas, etc.) are strongly encouraged:
a. To adhere to the ASDA Code of Ethics and the ADA
Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional
Conduct;
b. To be directly supervised by dentists licensed to
practice in the United States or by faculty at a CODA-
accredited dental school;
c. To perform only procedures for which the volunteer
has received proper education and training.

The new D1s at Midwestern

of the race are important, but
the race cannot be won
without running that baton

What a legacy to

Thank you to those that have
paved the way, and it is our
honor and pleasure to bring
up the rear in being the fourth
class of Dental students at
Midwestern, to nally ll all
four classes.
I am a third year student and graduated from the
University of Dayton in Ohio in 2009. Go Flyers! I
grew up in Barrington a suburb of Chicago, but I
love the Arizona sun. I have been involved in ASDA
at Midwestern for the past three years being the
Community Service Representative my first year, Vice president and then
President after Chrissy Tiller became our District 10 Trustee my second year,
and now the President. ASDA has given me great opportunities to promote
my University while enhancing my educational experience.
I have been privileged to collaborate with many students and the
supportive faculty at MWU as well as networking with other school leaders. I
am looking forward to working with the District Cabinet and increasing
communication among the new Chapter Presidents. Our Chapter and school
have some great events in the near future. We are getting ready to graduate
our first class this coming spring of 2012, which is very exciting for MWU!
Our chapter has and changed so much in the past few years. Our
summer Simulation Course for pre-dental students has been extremely
successful, and expanded to multiple weekends with over 200 participants.
Providing education opportunities for our members, we hosted our first Vendor
fair last year which had over 20 vendors present. Also, we had our first Give Kids
a Smile event last April where we treated over 260 children! This fall we hold a
new community service event Super Sealant Saturday on October 8th, where we
hope to treat around 400 children. In order to create new events and increase
member involvement we have restructured by adding new committees, positions,
and even a SPEC Chapter.
Membership has increased at our Chapter and our Dean, Dr. Russell
Gilpatrick, generously gave our members a new incentive. The MWU-College of
Dental Medicine has always covered the first year of enrollment into ASDA, but
now if our members renew for both their 2
nd
and 3
rd
year the CDM will cover
their 4
th
year in ASDA. It was great to have our hard work recognized nationally
at the Annual Session in Anaheim receiving Honorable Mention for the Ideal
ASDA Most Improved Chapter. Our past ASDA leaders have really set a great
foundation for our ASDA Chapter to keep succeeding, and I am excited to watch
our Chapter continue to thrive!

The School of Dentistry at Oregon Health and Science University is currently in the midst of a new and exciting time.
The month of October marks the start of a new era in dental education in the state of Oregon with the construction of
the new, state of the art, LEED certified dental school. For the past year, many of our faculty and administrators have
devoted numerous hours of their free time working out the fine details that have made the dream of a new dental school
possible. There have been mixed reactions about the new dental school from the students, but the overall feel is
excitement that new dental students will get a great opportunity to experience a new wave of dentistry with the new
facility.
As far as the ASDA chapter goes, we have recently elected new officers and are excited about the prospect of the
incoming class. We had a record number of applicants for ASDA leadership positions this year who have brought fresh
ideas that we are excited to implement in the next year. The future of the dental school and ASDA are bright in the near
future and we are looking forward to the excitement and challenges that will be present in the upcoming years.
Hello District,
Here at Roseman we are in the beginning stages of developing our chapter. Our current officers consist of
Khealynn Harris as Vice President, James Schoff as Treasurer and Ali Dawood as Secretary. We are
working with the other organizations deciding what the responsibilities of each will be,i.e. ADEA heading
the SIM Lab and ASDA organizing the Vendor Fair. Soon we will submit our Constitution and Bylaws, as
well as elect a Membership Chair and Legislative Liason.
We look forward to establishing our ASDA Chapter, and learning from each of you as we evolve.

Life As We Know It
A snapshot of the ups, downs and in-betweens on the path to becoming a dentist.
While the excitement of summer comes to a close, a new excitement lls the MWU simulation
clinic...
It is the class of 2014, anxious to acquire those hand skills so desperately needed in
the coming years. With the NBDE part I in the rear-view mirror, we are ready to continue
our path to becoming dental professionals.
Personally, I am looking forward to the extra time we will have in the simulation clinic.
During the first year we only got to spend one day per week in sim lab and out of the
lecture hall. Now we will be spending two to three days per week in the pre-clinic and
thats a huge relief.
Im also glad to have the rigors of our 1st year Basic Sciences course completed.
Although, I think my classmates will agree, second year demands just as much time, if
not more than the first year. When I asked a 3rd year student what surprised him most
about the D2 year, he replied, The days are even longer than D1
But there is light at the end of the tunnel now and were getting ready to head into
the Dental Institute. Even though the schedule might seem too demanding for anything
other than school, if you know where to look, you will always find a group of students
making time to take a break. Especially the D2 class. They can regularly be found in the
cafeteria on the foosball or ping-pong tables, in the gym or basketball courts. Theres
even a little time to enjoy the great Arizona fall and go outside to play sand volleyball
and toss around a football or a Frisbee. No matter the activity it is refreshing to have a
nice balance of work and playsomething I think will be necessary for the D2 year.
