2011 brings a new coach, same expectations for Indians
By Tommy Brown
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES-REVIEW
For. Michael. Seibert,. his. first. head.
coaching.job.seems.like.the.perfect.fit..He.
finds. himself. with. a. team. that. made. the.
playoffs. a. year. ago,. has. a. lot. of. returning.
talent. and. still. has. a.bitter.taste.from. how.
last.years.season.ended.
While. some. first-year. head. coaches.
may.not.embrace.the.expectations.of.being.
successful.immediately,.Seibert.enjoys.the.
pressure.
Expectations. are. always. good,. he.
said..Id.much.rather.come.into.good.sit-
uation. with. kids. that. know. how. to. win,.
have. ability. and. have. talent.. I. definitely.
like.the.expectations.
Some. of. that. talent. may. not. be. on. the.
basketball. court. for. a. while. as. several.
players. are. on. the. football. team,. which.
hopes. it. can. sustain. another. deep. playoff.
run.like.last.year.
Returning. seniors. for. the. Indians. are.
Tyler. Bates,. Ricky. Bocanegra,. Abel.
Manriquez.and.Ricky.Handy.
Juniors. include. Taylor. Seeton,. Keith.
Kantner,. Sam. Manning,. Marcus. McNeil.
and.Jake.Geeo.
Sophomores. Jayden. Turner,. Brandon.
Castillo,.Xavier.Adams.and.freshman.Trey.
Nixon.round.out.the.roster.
Seibert.is.not.concerned.about.the.players.
being. away. from. basketball,. but. rather. he.
sees.an.opportunity.for.some.the.young.play-
ers.to.step.into.roles.they.wouldnt.otherwise.
Its. a. unique. situation. to. smaller.
schools,.Seibert.said..Hopefully.football.
is. playing. for. a. long. time. and. then. when.
we.do.get.those.kids.in.well.have.a.com-
pletely.different.look.
Its.going.to.be.good.for.those.younger.
kids. to. get. experience. and. take. on. bigger.
roles. than. they. would. if. football. wasnt.
playing..Itll.definitely.help.us.with.depth.
and.in.the.future.
Another. reason. for. Seiberts. stance. on.
hoping.the.football.team.continues.playing.
through. November. and. into. December. is.
that.winning.can.become.contagious.
Theres. always. something. to. be. said.
about. winning,. he. said.. Getting. kids. in.
here. that. know. and. expect. to. win. is. an.
exciting. thing.. Winning. is. a. learned. habit.
and.to.have.that.infused.into.the.team.mid-
way.through.the.season.will.be.nice.
Expectations. of. playoffs. and. playoff.
runs.are.something.Seibert.encourages.and.
after.the.way.last.year.ended,.he.envisions.
Alvarado. being. the. perfect. situation. for. a.
new.coach.
The. expectation. is. to. be. in. playoffs.
again..I.expect.it,.kids.expect.it,.everyone.
expects. it,. he. said.. I. think. last. years.
experience. was. good. for. this. season..
Having. kids. that. are. experienced. and. yet.
hungry.is.what.every.coach.wants.to.walk.
into.
The.fact.that.they.did.make.it.last.year.
but. didnt. finish. how. they. wanted. . its.
nice. to. have. that. to. use. as. a. motivator,. to.
keep. them. focused. on. improving. every.
day.
Alvarado. fell. to. Lake. Worth,. 67-48,. in.
the. bidistrict. round. of. the. playoffs. to. fin-
ish.22-10.

For.the.first.time.in.four.years,.the.Lady.Indians.will.see.a.familiar.

That.familiar.face.has.already.made.a.big.difference..even.before.

and. they. have. a. new. coach. in. Keith.
McFarland.
Jon.Normand.left.over.the.summer.to.fill.
the. boys. head. coaching. position. at.

While.Godley.is.short.on.returning.start-
ers,.they.will.have.nine.seniors.on.the.team.

The. Wildcats. also. have. Koby. Foster,.

McFarland.said.the.Wildcats.will.operate.

Junior Gonzales ready to lead Chargers to postseason
By Zack cunningham
SPORTS@TRCLE.COM
After. an. exciting. end. to. the. 2010-11.
season,. the. Keene. Chargers. will. have. a.
starkly.different.look.to.them.this.year.
Last. years. team. went. 22-14,. finished.
tied. for. third. in. District. 15-2A. with.
Maypearl. (10-5. in. league. play). and.
advanced. to. the. playoffs. where. the.
Chargers.fell.in.the.first.round.to.Hearne.
The. highlight. of. the. season. may. have.
come. in. the. tiebreaker. against. Maypearl.
where. senior. Seandre. Sadler. went. off. for.
47. points. in. leading. the. Chargers. to. vic-
tory.
Keene.is.without.Sadler.this.season.and.
Julian. Ganzalez,. Ben. Baggi,. Tony. Smith,.
Andy. Granda. and. Clayton. Loeak. are. also.
gone.
The. lone. returning. starter. for. Keene. is.
junior. Manuel. Gonzales,. a. three-year. let-
terman. and. one. of. the. Chargers. most.
explosive.scorers.
The.team.does.have.five.seniors.in.Alik.
Aaron,. Moses. Thomas,. Jonathan. Lati,.
Alex.Lanki.and.Brandon.Brown.
Head. Coach. Jason. Hill. said. he. expects.
the. athletes. to. take. ownership. of. the. pro-
gram.
Every.team.is.different,.he.said..You.
have. to. find. who. the. leaders. are. and. give.
them. responsibility. and. let. the. players.
take.ownership.of.the.program.
Hill. emphasized. he. wants. his. team. to.
continue. running. the. same. up-tempo,.
spread. offense. it. ran. last. year. and. play.
man-to-man.defense.in.both.the.half-court.
set.and.apply.some.full-court.pressure.
Our. goals. are. to. challenge. for. that.
district. championship,. he. said.. I. think.
Italy. is. the. team. to. beat. going. in..We. talk.
about. banners. and. goals. every. day.. We.
cant. be. out. here. and. not. have. a. mission..
Even. though. we. lost. a. lot. of. guys. and.
were.not.very.big,.thats.still.our.goal.
Italy. should. be. the. front. runner. and. I.
know.Whitney.has.a.lot.of.kids..Grandview.
is. always. well-coached. and. athletic,. but.
our. goal. is. to. win. the. district. and. were.
not.going.to.sell.ourselves.short.on.that.
Despite. lacking. the. size. of. last. years.
team,.Hill.said.Keene.will.benefit.in.other.
ways. from. a. smaller. and. more. accurately.
shooting.lineup.
I. think. we. can. extend. our. defense.
more. this. year,. Hill. said.. Last. year,. we.
didnt.do.that.as.much.because.we.wanted.
to. get. Seandre. open,. but. this. year. were.
smaller. and. faster.. Were. going. to. try. to.
pick. it. up. full. court. and. create. a. faster.
defense. as. opposed. to. letting. the. other.
teams.walk.us.up.into.a.half-court.set.
You. could. say. the. Chargers. are. led. by.
the. M&Ms. in. Manu. and. Moses,. Hill.
said.. He. added. that. Keene. has. more. scor-
ers.at.its.disposal.this.season.
I. think. well. shoot. the. ball. better,. he.
said.. Last. year. we. had. a. bunch. of. true.
shooters..
Id.say.there.are.times.where.we.could.
have.six.to.eight.kids.who.can.step.up.and.
knock.shots.down..They.can.take.the.pres-
sure.off.of.Manu.and.Moses.

Cavasos system taking shape in young, skilled Eagles

The. Rio.Vista. Eagles. have. another. year.
to. learn. under. Head. Coach. Ryan. Cavasos,.

Last. year,. we. tried. to. play. harder. and.
be. more. fundamentally. sound,. Cavasos.
said.. Defensively,. we. need. to. get. better..
Last.year.in.some.aspects,.we.got.a.lot.bet-
ter.
By. the. end. of. the. year,. we. were. doing.
things. better. than. at. the. beginning. but. that.

Last.years.star.player,.Cooper.Ferguson,.

end. of. the. game.. We. ran. a. lot. of. box-and-

In. those. games. which. we. won,. we.

Keene,. Italy. and. Grandview. along. with.

averaging.eight.or.10.points.a.game.and.get.

Without.her.being.there,.it.would.be.dif-
ficult.molding.all.these.youngsters..Shes.like.

In. addition. to. the. reliability. Fierro. brings.
is.Morgan.Landers,.a.versatile.6-2.junior.who.
is. getting. attention. from. some. NCAA.
Division. I. programs.. Everything. will. go.
through.her,.East.said.
East.also.believes.without.any.reservation.
that. his. two. youngsters. are. good. enough. to.
play.at.this.level;.theyre.not.here.simply.out.
of. necessity,. though. East. admitted. that.
Burlesons.depth.chart.of.true.guards.goes.
as.deep.as.Bryan.and.Fierro.
Theyll.share.time.at.each.guard.position.
Lindsay. will. knock. it. down.. Shes. a.
shooter,.East.said.
Theyre.legit,.East.said.of.the.two.fresh-

come.in..When.it.clicks,.I.think.theyre.going.
to. be. good. this. year.. You. can. imagine. what.
theyll.be.as.sophomores.
To. improve. on. a. fifth-place. finish. last.
season. and. compete. with. traditional. state.
powers.Granbury.and.Mansfield.Summit,.and.
emerging.Arlington.Seguin.and.Crowley,.the.
Lady. Elks. will. depend. on. how. quickly. his.
young.team,.freshmen.or.otherwise,.mature.
Hes.confident.that.will.happen.
It. could. be. really,. really. good. quick,.
East. said.. Or. there. could. be. some. growing.
pains,. but. theres. going. to. be. a. point. where.

Surprisingly,.the.Lady.Indians.managed.to.
get.even.younger.in.McKinneys.second.year..
The. team. lost. three. seniors. off. last. years.
team.and.did.not.have.a.single.junior.on.the.
team.in.her.first.year.
This.year,.she.said.shell.likely.have.seven.
juniors,. four. of. which. were. with. the. varsity.
last. year,. a. couple. of. sophomores. and. as.
many.as.three.freshman.
Ive. caught. a. lot. of. flack. because. our.
numbers. are. down,. McKinney. admits..
Were.running.a.varsity.and.a.true.freshman.
team. but. it. helps. to. look. at. next. year. . this.
will. be. my. varsity. for. two. years. and. the.
freshmen. group. will. be. my. junior. varsity.
next. year. and. then. we. have. a. great. eighth.
grade.group.that.will.be.here.
When. you. are. building. a. program. you.
have.to.have.an.eye.on.the.future.
With.a.young.team.this.year.and.a.future.
that.appears.to.be.bright,.McKinney.believes.
this. years. team. is. set. up. to. lay. the. ground-
work.for.future.success.
Its.all.about.baby.steps.and.teaching.that.
heart,. that. drive. and. that. determination. it.
takes.to.win,.she.said..We.may.not.win.this.
year,. but. we. want. to. lay. the. foundation. to.
where.will.win.next.year.and.beyond.
While.McKinney.says.this.year.is.going.to.
be. a. building. block. to. future. success,. she.
cant. help. but. look. at. the. district. the. Lady.
Indians. are. in. and. not. get. a. little. excited.
about.the.prospects.of.finding.success.sooner.
rather.than.later.
Weve.already.started.talking.about.what.
it. would. take. to. get. into. that. third. spot. and.
into. the. playoffs,. she. said.. We. beat.
Hillsboro.twice.last.year,.played.Venus.close.
both.times.and.weve.come.a.long.way.from.
last. year. so. thats. four. of. the. six. wins. we.
would.need.
All. we. have. to. do. is. sneak. in. and. acci-
dentally. beat. West. that. first. time. and. from.
there..you.never.know.what.can.happen.
