I believe that international travel opens your eyes to the fact that people view the world in unique ways and solve challenges differently. I was part of two rice mBa international trips mexico and china. I heard presentations, one by dr. herminio Blanco, founder and ceo of soluciones estratgicas consultora and former chief nafta negotiator at IPade Business school, another by Professor li-an Zhous at tsinghua university, and we still had plenty of time to be tourists and have fun.

Bill Arnold
Professor in the Practice of Energy Management As a senior executive in energy, government and banking, Bill engaged at the highest levels of government in the U.S. and abroad to provide geopolitical insights, develop business strategies and advance multi-billion dollar projects. What most impressed me about the Jones School were the students. They bring extraordinary experience into the classroom. I hope to give them the perspective of other stakeholders, to help them understand the complex condition of meeting environmental, social and economic requirements, and to recognize the critical dimensions to energy and sustainability.
Ibn sinas mission is based on providing affordable access to health care for those who would otherwise have none, including the over one million harris county residents who are currently uninsured. the rice mBa capstone student teams understood the spirit of this mission and crafted growth strategies and associated implementation plans that not only provided an actionable blueprint for our expansion plans but also provided professional presentation materials that we used to procure a sizable funding grant from houston endowment.

Al Napier
Professor of Management Director, Center on the Management of Information Technology Area Coordinator, Entrepreneurship In 1998, 14 years after he began teaching at the Jones Graduate School, Al Napier had the idea to begin each semester with every students name memorized. I would go into the classroom, ask them to put away their tent cards, and then call every one of them by their first name. And hes done it ever since. The minute I do that, he says, It changes the atmosphere in the classroom. They realize that I know who they are, that I care about them, and that I expect them to be prepared for class. Recipient of a 2007 and 2010 Jones School Excellence Award in Teaching and winner of the 2008 Acton Award, a national honor for excellence in entrepreneurship

At the age of 26, with a BA, MBA and PhD all from University of Texas at Austin, Al went to work for Conoco for eight years and then before joining the Jones School, he started and owned a highly successful computer consulting, training and book publishing company that he eventually sold to his business partner after 20 years of operation. Today he says of his teaching career, I enjoy having alumni back in class and treating their experiences like a teaching case. They lecture to students who are sitting in the very same seats they sat in. Im inspired by having a positive impact on people and showing students what they can do and how they can succeed.

Sebastien Michenaud, Assistant Professor of Finance, asks students to consider how financial policy impacts corporate value.
A member of the faculty since 2007, Prashant received the 2009 Rice MBA for Professionals program Teaching Award for Excellence and 2010 Rice MBA Full-Time program Teaching Award for Excellence. You have to enjoy teaching, he says. There is a certain amount of energy that automatically comes into the classroom when you like what you do. Prashant knew he wanted to teach since he was young. His mother was an elementary school teacher, and he always believed his dream job would be to teach math to second graders. However, while earning his MBA, he realized there was a way to combine his love of teaching and his love of business teach at a business school. He didnt apply to a PhD program immediately, though. I felt if I were to teach business, I also needed to work in the world of business so that I better understood it. He worked seven years before attending The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania for his PhD. After seven years teaching at the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan, the opportunity to grow brought him to Rice. Prashant found the vibrancy of Houston and the positive environment at the Jones School very attractive. The Jones School has grown significantly in the last three or four years and at the same time the bar has been set
higher as our faculty has increased and thats always good for a school. The higher the bar, the stronger everyone becomes.
Prashant Kale
Associate Professor of Strategic Management Prashant Kale believes that prospective students should look for the whole learning environment at a school. I tell my students that the two years you spend here youre really trying to build a jigsaw puzzle and each course that you complete is really just a piece of the puzzle. So in my course, lets try to connect the pieces to build the whole puzzle. I consistently drive that point.
Professor Kales class is the embodiment of case learning; you always feel like youre the ceo and youre in the drivers seat. It takes a very good teacher to keep a healthy discussion going and to steer it in the direction that delivers the most benefit to the entire class and this is what sets his strategy class apart from other classes.

I had to be very efficient with my time and learn to balance all of my priorities, professionally and personally, as quickly as possible. I was surprised by the variety of activities available for an mBa for Professionals student. there are student clubs for any area of business that you may want to explore with great opportunities for networking with your peers and making new business contacts. I find the time to be a member of the energy, entrepreneurship and consulting clubs. I was a volunteer at last years rice Business Plan competition and am also the secretary for the Jones student association.

Case Competitions
Rice MBAs know how to execute under tight deadlines. Nothing quite demonstrates this as clearly as their consistent success in external case competitions, including some of the most highly regarded international case competitions. During a competition, teams of students have a short time sometimes as little as 24 hours to develop a strategic solution to a problem, analyze unanticipated issues, and present a solution to a team of expert judges, usually from industries related to the case at hand. Add to this the competitive pressure of facing off against the best and brightest from many of the other top MBA programs from around the country, and you can understand the intense value that is created from participating in one of these competitions. Our students have competed against top-ranked international and U.S. business schools in subject areas such as marketing, strategy, finance, energy, real estate, and business plans and have been successful in all instances. Rice MBAs emerge from case competitions with a deeper understanding of both strengths and weaknesses in their analytical and presentation skills, as well as a profound appreciation of team dynamics (and hopefully a little extra spending money in their pockets). There is truly no better way to learn than learning by doing.

the rice mBa experience allowed us to step outside our professional and intellectual comfort zones to try something new, craig horak said. as production superintendent with occidental chemical, I applied my engineering background and things I learned in core classes to a marketing case competition.
Equipped with varied backgrounds in engineering, economics and international business, the exuberant team of five included Craig Horak, Bonnie Houston, Leo Maguchi, Aaron Webb and Jason Zengel. It was Leo who proposed the idea over dinner in the Anderson Family Commons in mid September. Do we want to try this? The answer was a resounding yes. For Leo, an assistant manager in sales and marketing at Marubeni America Corporation, the value of the experience was in forming the group and applying what wed been taught at such an early stage. Having already made it through the first two rounds of the competition via email, the team got the call that theyd made it to the finals. It was a lot of work coordinating our jobs and personal schedules to add extra time for preparation, said Jason, group head, Americas Region at ExxonMobil Research & Engineering Company. But the program had already introduced us to the importance of juggling several things at once so I was excited about the opportunity. In the final round, up against five other teams and using the same company and case background material as in the first two rounds, the team had 15 minutes to present their case analysis to a panel of judges and an additional five minutes to answer questions from the panel. It was kind of intimidating, admitted Aaron. As a sales engineer at Protos, I dont often get large-venue presentation opportunities so I jumped at the chance. It was an incredible learning experience. I found myself having aha moments when something came up in class that we couldve applied in the competition. The group plans to enter at least one more case competition during their second year. Our approach would be so different this time, said Bonnie, Project Manager at National Oilwell Varco. Wed add more quantitative information and restructure our analysis. We will be much better prepared to compete.
Congratulations to 2009 NAWMBA Case Competition finalists: Craig Horak, Leo Maguchi, Bonnie Houston, Jason Zengel and Aaron Webb all Rice MBA for Professionals Weekend, Class of 2011.

Evy Pappas
Rice MBA for Professionals Evening, Class of 2009 Architect, Pappas Restaurants After graduating from Duke, Evy Pappas went to Harvard to pursue a master in architecture. She practiced three years in Boston and three years at Gensler in Houston before deciding an MBA would complement and enhance her architectural career. The Rice MBA for Professionals program was the perfect match because it allowed me to continue working and developing the proficiencies required of architects while also pursuing the skills needed to succeed in business. After graduation, she went to work in the family business, Pappas Restaurants. As part of the Building Group, shes able to combine her architectural skills and MBA expertise. To me, the value of the Rice MBA is the confidence and preparation I achieved to become a leader in this community and in my work without hesitation or restraint.

I joined the Entrepreneurship Club during my first year. The school club experience is like anything else; you get out of it what you are willing to put in. Because I was an active member and actively sought to help the club, it turned out to be a tremendous opportunity. During my first year, I learned the steps in writing a business plan from an active entrepreneur. I had the opportunity to travel to San Francisco and attend the Velocity Conference where I heard personal experiences from successful entrepreneurs. And probably the most meaningful experience was being able to help with the Rice Business Plan Competition because the Entrepreneurship Club was essential in coordinating the volunteers necessary. Brian Murry, Rice MBA for Professionals Evening, Class of 2010 Former MBAP Liaison of Entrepreneurship Club Administrative Fellow, Texas Childrens Hospital Being an officer in the Rice Finance Club (RFC) helped my professional development tremendously. Not only did my duties give me valuable contacts and networking opportunities, but they also helped me develop a greater ability to make social and political trade-offs. My RFC colleagues taught me that being a leader isnt just about making the best decisions for the present, but also about appreciating the totality of the impact of my decisions. In that sense, I came to understand that I wasnt only representing current RFC members, I was representing past and future RFC members as well. John Reuwer, Rice MBA for Professionals Evening, Class of 2010 Former MBAP Liaison of Finance Club Vice President - Health Solutions, LLC and Trico Real Estate LP Participating in the Hispanic Business Student Association was a great opportunity to attract employers that appreciate diversity. womens Preview weekend is what sold me on rice. I had already applied and been accepted, and was struggling with that last step. It was a panel of alumni who were all discussing what an mBa had done for their lives that clinched it for me. hearing the women talk about balancing work and family, or choosing to focus on family and reentering the workforce later, helped clear out my mind. any doubts I had were eliminated as I put my deposit in the mail that sunday.
