verses in the member’s notes and answer the questions in their section.

Give them 4 minutes to discuss and 1 minute to round up their thoughts.

Thereafter, ask the group to present their answers.

The following are suggested answers for leaders:

A ii) What do you think must have gone through Joshua’s mind at the start of
Joshua 1? Why do you think God has to assure him time and again?
Joshua must be reeling from the shock of having to lead the
people. He must have felt inadequate and discouraged that is
why God has to assure time 3 times in the first chapter.

A iii) Do you think Joshua was up to the task at this point of time?
No, that is why he needs God’s assurance. But as he began to
experience God and how God exalts him in front of all Israel, his
confidence and leadership ability grew.

A iv) List some of the miracles he experienced in the process.

a) the parting of River Jordan (Josh 3:14-17)

b) the appearing of the Angel of the Lord to him (Josh 5:13-15)

c) the divine plan for the fall of Jericho (Josh 6:12-21)

B i) How do you rate Joshua’s success in achieving this agenda?

Joshua led the people into the promised land by the miraculous
crossing of the River Jordan. He followed God’s methods and
achieve God’s results. Thus, he was very successful.

B ii) What do you think were the reasons God appointed Joshua to lead the
people into the promised land instead of letting Moses do so?
God wants to raise up a new generation to possess the land (c.f.
Deut 1:32-38). Moses also sinned against God by striking the rock
at the waters of Meribah (see Num 20:7-13) and thus forfeit his
rights to enter into the promised land (see Num 27:12-28)

B iii) What are the purposes for the Israelites to possess the promised land?
They are to execute judgement on the foul Cannannites and
proclaim God’s salvations to the heathen nations.
In addition, this is in fulfillment of God’s covenantal promise to
Abraham.

C ii) Why do you think God gives such a plan to Joshua?

So that everybody knows that it is an act of God and no man can
boast.

C iii) What can we learn from Joshua’s execution of the plan?

He followed it to the T. It is a lesson in obedience.

to their age group and will relate better to their life issues.

For the discussion on “cell group”, either hand out post-it notes or get a
marker and a board ready for members to write down their goal, vision,
areas of growth they like to see in the cell group.

For the discussion question on “my personal life”, read the questions and
invite one or two persons to share if you want. Else quickly go to the
conclusion where time will be given for each members to write their
reflections on these two questions.

IV. Conclusion (5 mins)

Do the action time. If there is time, invite some of them to share. Else go
into prayer for the individual. For large group, I usually advocate breaking up
into smaller groups so that everybody has a chance to pray. However, do
move the grouping around so that there is a better mix of people in the cell
group instead of the same people always praying and sharing together.
