MGMT 1001 Midterm Study Guide Note : This document is intended to be a guide.

It does not constitute a contract about what is and is not going to be on the exam. This guide focuses mainly on the material and content of readings and lectures that are central and vital to the class objectives for the midterm exam. While it is important to know the key terms listed below, the questions on the exam will also require that students be able to apply and integrate their knowledge to an actual organizational context. For example, students may be asked about the application of topics to a video clip viewed in class or an organization that was discussed in class to exemplify a key concept. The format of the test will be multiple choice. Teamwork What are the key characteristics of teams? What are the different types of teams? By authority structure? Type of Work? Location/characteristics of members? What are team goals and why are they important? What are the characteristics of effective team goals? Know the different forms of task interdependence. How does interdependence affect team performance? What is the difference between functional roles and team roles? What are the four stages of team development? What evidence is there for the sequential development of teams through these stages? What is team identity and how does it affect team performance? What is the role of identity formation in teams? What are the different types of team conflict and what effect do they have on team performance? Describe the five different conflict styles and how they might affect performance. Identify several different strategies for conflict resolution in teams. What is team cohesiveness and how does it relate to team performance? What are team norms? How are they formed? How do they affect team performance? Know the different components related to team effectiveness. What are the factors that facilitate team performance? What are factors that inhibit team performance? Know the different dimensions of trust and how they related to each other.

Managers & Organizations/The External Environment What kinds of information can you obtain using annual reports? What do you think you know about the company you examined from its annual report? Does other information you have (as a customer, investor, employee) substantiate or contradict what you learn from the annual report? How does using multiple views/lenses help you to understand an organization? Why does the standard of living differ across countries? Who are the different stakeholders for organizations? What are the different factors related to wealth creation? Why are some countries rich while others are poor? What are the four key functions of management? What are the three main types of skills needed by managers? How and why does their relative emphasis change across levels? How might/should you develop each of these skill types? What is the difference between a managerial focus on efficiency versus effectiveness? What are the five elements of the external environment? Be prepared to give examples of each element. Reflect on what you noticed about the Fortune 100 lists you examined for class. Using the external environment, identify changes in each element that can explain some of the changes you noticed on the largest 100 firms across the years you compared. What are the four elements of the task environment? How does the task environment differ from the external environment? How does it relate. Reflecting on the annual report you read, be prepared to use the companys task environment as a source of examples to illustrate how the task environment affects firm efficiency and effectiveness. Describe Scientific Management. What are the key principles? What drove Taylor to develop his theory? Were his inventions successful? Why or why not? Describe Administrative Management Theory. How does it differ from Scientific Management? What were Fayols principles of management? How did they differ from the theories that came before it? Describe the work of Follett. What insight did her work add to the evolution of management history?

What were the Hawthorne studies and how did they change managerial thought and action? What was the human relations movement and what key insights did it provide? What are Theory X and Theory Y? What different disciplines in management evolved from management science theory? What is the difference between an open systems & closed systems view of organizations? What is contingency theory and how does it relate to an organizations environment? What are the different managerial roles and competencies? Know how to compare and contrast the different theories of leadership. What are the different sources & contingencies of power in organizations? What are the different influence tactics? How and why do they work? What are the different ways that people react to them? What are the different decision making biases? How do they work? How can we avoid falling prey to decision making biases?

Strategy Be able to define and describe the difference between goals and plans Know the different planning types and their strengths and weaknesses. Criteria for effective goals. Know the criteria. Be able to write a goal or set of goals and detail how each characteristic of effective goals is met in the goals you set. Scenario planning and crisis management. Know the differences. Know the purposes of each. Know the definition of a mission statement. What constitutes an effective mission statement? Link this to the OAS framework. What is OAS and why should a mission statement cover all three elements? Be able to write or share a mission statement as an example of how it can/cannot guide corporate strategy. What is the definition of strategic management and what are the key elements of the definition? Which function of managers is strategy most about?

What is the definition of competitive advantage and what are the components or contributing factors to it? What are the key steps in the strategic planning process? What is situation analysis and how do SWOT and Five Forces contribute to it? Be able to describe SWOT and Five Forces and provide examples of how they are used and what kind of information can be obtained from their use. Know the generic competitive strategies Porter identifies that can be adopted by corporations. What are the core competencies required to pursue each of the strategies? What is a corporate level strategy? What are some organizational examples of the different types of corporate level strategies? Know the definition of integration and the difference between backward and forward integration. What are different business level strategies? How can they be implemented? What are some examples of organizations using competitive tactics?
