FROM OUR PASTOR

You will be reading this on the weekend of our Fall Festival which always runs on Friday evening and all day Saturday but which this year has been two or three weeks earlier than usual - in mid-October rather than early November. I have to write this article some time in advance so I dont know, as you will, how things have gone; but my special prayer at the moment is that we will have good weather - preferably without rain and not too blisteringly hot. The Festival is an effort of the whole community, involving huge numbers of volunteers in planning, setting-up, running booths and serving food, and then restoring everything to normality. I want to say a special word of thanks to Mary Ann Sipp, the Festival Chair, to Jonathan Toole, our staff liaison, and to the wonderful people on the committee. Amazingly they put this entire event together in less than three months and the process works like a welloiled machine because people are so willing to give of their time and talents. In many ways these days of the Festival are an image of what a parish community should be like all the year, with people working together and using their varied skills to achieve an end which is greater than any of us. One of the great strengths of the American Church is its lay leadership. In some countries of Europe every tiny decision in a parish had to be approved by the parish priest. Here in America lay Catholics have not been afraid to take responsibility for the growth of the church: from German immigrant farmers establishing Catholic communities across the Midwest in the nineteenth century to Tom Monaghan building a Catholic University in South Florida in the twenty-first. Their sense of initiative does not mean that they are disrespectful of the hierarchy (as Vatican officials feared at one time). Not at all: they are people of real faith who value the sacraments and the tradition of the Church; and they have grasped the truth that Christ has entrusted a mission to every member of the People of God. The Second Vatican Council noted: Pastors know how much the laity contribute to the welfare of the entire Church. Pastors also know that they themselves were not meant by Christ to shoulder alone the entire saving mission of Christ toward the world (Lumen Gentium s. 30). The Fall Festival is a celebration of the contributions which so many of you make to the parish throughout the year. If our parish is strong, it is not because of the priests - we come and go - but rather because of the steady commitment of you lay people, often over many years. It is our privilege to serve you.

HOW DO I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Are you interested in learning more

about the Catholic faith? Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults (anyone seven years of age or older) journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning Gods call. If interested in participating, please call the office. We will be happy to assist you on your journey.

OFFICE HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-3:30 pm MARRIAGE PREPARATION: Please contact the Church Office to schedule a meeting with Father Augustine. You need to allow six months for the preparation process and it would help us if you obtain new baptismal certificates before the meeting. We can also help with the convalidation (blessing) of a civil marriage and sometimes with the annulment of a previous marriage, as long as the civil divorce is complete.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD, SEVEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN BAPTIZED CATHOLIC?
Once a child reaches the age of reason (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult isthrough the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic. If you are considering having your childage 7 or olderbecome Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

BAPTISM PREPARATION is offered to parents and

godparents and is required prior to scheduling a baptism. Please register for the class by calling Deacon Paul Volkerson at the Parish Office (407.293.9556 extension 110). Classes take place on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

Theme: The Role of Mary in Our Faith The Marian Congress will nurture our faith and highlight the important role of our Blessed Mother in salvation history. Bishop John Noonan The Congress will begin Friday, October 21, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary Queen of the Universe in Orlando, with an opening liturgy. There will be a multicultural procession and rosary at 6:30 pm and Mass at 7:30 pm celebrated by Bishop John Noonan. 22, On October 22 the Marian Congress will continue at Holy Redeemer Parish in Kissimmee with a day of presentations in both English and Spanish, a musical tribute to the Blessed Mother and prayer. There will be two Keynote Addresses: "Mary in the Scriptures" and "Mary in the Life of the Church for the 3rd Millennium." Saida and George Rashmawi, volunteers from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem in the Holy Land, are visiting our parish the weekend of 22October 22-23. They will speak to us about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land. They also have some beautiful Olive Wood carvings which are handmade by the Christian people in that area. This is a Church mission to maintain the existence of the Catholic people in the Holy Land. Catholics used to be the majority in that land but the percentage has now dropped to less than 1.5%. Please take time to look at the carvings, make a purchase and help this worthy cause.

November, beginning with the feasts of All Saints and All Souls is called the Souls, month of the dead. Its the month when we make a special effort to remember those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, particularly our family members, friends and benefactors. We give thanks for them and pray for them. If you get envelopes you will find an All Souls envelope among them. If you dont, you will find spare All Souls envelopes at the back of the church. Write the names of the departed loved ones you wish to be remembered at Mass and, if you are able, make an offering.
