SOLUTIONS: PRACTISE EXERCISE 4 1.

In the figure above, assume the side of the square = 2 units. Area of square = 4 sq units. Area of AGE = Area of BEF = , Also, Area of CFD = 1. Thus, it can be seen that the area outside the quadrilateral EFDG is 2 and hence, the area of the quadrilateral EFDG = 4-2=2 sq units. Consequently, ratio of areas = 2/4 =1/2. Option a is correct.

2. You can experiment with various dimensions for the cut out corners. If we cut out 2x2 at the corners, the dimensions of the box would be 6x6x2 = 72 cubic inches. In case you go for 1x1 cuts, you get 8x8x1=64 cubic inches. @ 1.5x 1.5 cut in the corner, you get 7x7x1.5 = 73.5 cubic inches.

@ 1.66x1.66 cut in the corners, you get 6.66x6.66x1.66= 20/3 x 20/3 x 5/3 = 2000/27 =74.07 cubic inches You can see clearly that none of the options fits in the possible range of where our answer is heading towards. Option 4 is hence correct. Alternately, you can also try to solve this question using the concept that if we say that the corner is a cut of x by x units, then the volume of the open box would be given by: x(10-2x)2 = x ( 100 40x +4x2 ) = 4x3 -40x2 +100x. Differentiating this expression for volume of the box and equating it to zero, we get the quadratic expression: 12x2 -80x +100 = 0 3x2 -20x +25=0 The roots of the equation 5 and 1.66 represent local minima and local maxima for the cubic expression. Since x can only be in a range of 0 to 5 (given that the side is 0), the local maxima is at x=1.66. The required volume is: 20/3 x 20/3 x 5/3 = 2000/27 = 74.07 cubic inches.

3. Option 4 is correct as seen from the figure below.

4. The ratio of radii of the two circles would be 1:root 2. Hence, ratio of areas would be 1:2. Option d is correct. 5. It can be verified that there would be exactly 6 circles that can be placed around the inner circle of the 1 rupee coin in the middle as can be seen from the following figure.

Option b is correct.

6. Use the distance formula to get the answer as: d2 = 52 +152 = 250. Thus d= 5 root 10. Option c is correct. 7. From the figure it is clear that option c (14) is correct.

8. (The length of AB)2 would represent the area of the square. AB2 = 4+4= 8. Option b is correct. 9. If AB= BC then the two right angled triangles BAD and BCD have 2 sides equal. Naturally the third side would also be equal. Option c is correct. 10. Using Pythagoras theorem, the hypotenuse of the triangle with base and heights as 600 and 800 respectively would be 1000 and that hypotenuse would also be the diameter of the circle. Option d is correct. 11. The area of the circle with radius 2 would be and that would be the largest.

12. The side of the required square would be 2 units and hence its area would be 4 sq units.

13. The given cube after cutting as discussed would form a cube having 5x5x5 =125 smaller cubes. In order to completely cover this cube we would need an outer covering of 6x6x6=216 cubes. 14. When the height of the map gets multiplied by 3, the area would get multiplied by 3x3. Thus, we would need 6x3x3 = 54 liters of paint to paint the map. 15. In this situation, the cut would be across the diagonal and consequently, the cut would affect 4 cubes in each layer. Since, there would be a total of 4 layers it would give 16 cubes which would get affected. (refer to the figure below for better visualization)

16. The 3-4-5 triplet satisfies this condition.

Option a is correct.

17 and 18 solutions are based on the visualization below:

17. Option b is correct. 18. Option d is correct.

19. 8x11x2 = 16 x 22/7 x h h=7/2=3.5

20. From the figure below it is clear the R>r. Option c is correct.

21. 1:3:2. Use the respective formulae for volume of the figures to get the ratios.

22. Since the cut is at h/3 from the top, it would create a cone of volume 1/27th of the original volume. Thus, the required ratio of the new cone to the frustum of the cone is 1:26. Option a is correct. 23. option a 24. option a 25. The length of the rectangle would be 3. Hence, the perimeter is 10+3+10+3= 26. Option b is correct.

26. The two smaller angles should add to the right angles value. Option c is correct.
