PROXMOX

MAIL GATEWAY FILTER Questions and Answers

What is Proxmox and what does it do?

--Proxmox is a mail gateway. It filters email for viruses and spam.

Why do I still get spam?

--It is very difficult to filter every spam email without accidentally catching legitimate emails. So, we try to error on the side of caution and be slightly lenient rather than too strict.

What do the terms blacklist & whitelist mean?

--Blacklist means to always block email from a specific address. --Whitelist means to always allow email from a specific address.

How do I create a custom blacklist?

--If you have email messages trapped by Proxmox you will receive a daily email spam report showing the messages. This gives you the ability to whitelist, blacklist, deliver, or delete those messages. If you do not have email in the spam filter you will not receive a daily spam report.

What does the daily spam report look like?

--The next slide shows a screen capture of the spam report email. Notice the checkmark boxes to the left of each message. In this example, I could checkmark each message and click the blacklist button to add all of those messages to my blacklist. Then, the filter would automatically block emails from those addresses.

Daily Spam Report

If the first email were legitimate, you should click the square beside the message then click the button whitelist. This would set the filter to always allow mail from that user.

You can use the web interface link to view archived mail on the filter. Mail is kept in quarantine for 7 days.

Do I have to use the daily spam report?

--NO. You can simply delete the message and go on. However, it is a great way to make sure you dont have a legitimate email that you might otherwise miss. If everyone checked their spam report we could enforce tighter spam rules without fear of catching an important message.
