Sleep Stages

REM Sleep: o Stands for rapid eye movement sleep Also know as active sleep or paradoxical sleep Stage 1: o Transition period o Brain produces high amplitude theta waves o Lasts about 5-10 minutes Stage 2: o Brain begins to produce rapid bursts of rhythmic brain wave activity known as sleep spindles Stage 3: o Deep, slow brain waves known as delta waves begin to emerge Transitional period between light sleep and deep sleep If you are woken up during this stage, you may feel groggy and disoriented for several minutes. Stage 4: o Stage 4 sleep is the second stage of deep sleep. o In this stage the brain is making the slow delta waves almost exclusively.

It is also very difficult to wake someone up. Both stages of deep sleep are important for feeling refreshed in the morning.

Sleep Deprivation Sheer Exhaustion: The complete and utter lethargic feeling. Blurred Vision: Inability to keep your eyes open for extended periods of time. Impaired Coordination: slow motion and poor coordination to the extent of the inability to function.

General Discomfort: A constant feeling of discomfort. Other Health Issues: A severe lack of sleep can lead to future health problems and weakening of the immune system.

Human Sleep Necessity It is extremely important that the human body get proper rest, in the form of sleep. Lack of sleep can be detrimental to the body. Issues associated with the lack of sleep are; effects on growth, effects on brain development, mental illness, and impairment of ability. Sleep Disorders Insomnia: The inability for the body to get the amount of sleep it needs, and fall

asleep when it wants to. o Can often be found in relation to depression as well as a result of laziness and bad diet. Sleep Apnea: A sleep disorder in which the persons breathing temporarily stops during sleep. o Due to blockage of the airways. o Treated with continuous positive airway pressure. RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome): A disorder that causes and irresistible urge to move your legs. o Most often occurs when laying down or trying to fall asleep o Due to uncomfortable, tingly sensations.

Narcolepsy: A condition, which involves constant daytime sleepiness uncontrollable sleep habits. o Linked to hallucinations. DREAMS

The best thing about dreams is that fleeting moment, when you are between asleep and awake, when you don't know the difference between reality and fantasy, when for just that one moment you feel with your entire soul that the dream is reality, and it really happened. Anonymous Dreams are successions of images, ideas, sensations and emotions that form together during the different stages of sleep.

Dreams are most often found and experienced during REM sleep. o Brain activity reflects that of being awake and alert. The actual reason for why we dream, remains undetermined. o The study of dreams is called oneirology.
