Peacekeeping is defined by the United Nations as a unique and dynamic instrument developed by the Organization as a way to help countries torn by conflict create the conditions for lasting peace. It is distinguished from both peace building and peacemaking. The United Nations Chartnternational peace and security. For this reason, the international community usually looks to the Security Council to authorize peacekeeping operations Peacekeepers monitor and observe peace processes in poser gives the United Nations Security Council the power and responsibility to take collective action to maintain itconflict areas and assist ex-combatants in implementing the peace agreements they may have signed. Such assistance comes in many forms, including confidence-building measures, power-sharing arrangements, electoral support, strengthening the rule of law, and economic and social Pedevelopment. Accordingly UN peacekeepers (often referred to as Blue Beret because of their light blue berets or helmets) can include soldiers, police officers, and civilian personnel. UN peacekeeping missions involving Pakistan covers a long and cherished history of Pakistani involvement with the United Nations. Pakistan joined the United Nations on 30 September, 1947. Since 1960, Pakistan has been actively involved in most of the UN Peacekeeping missions and today stands at the top with 10,175 troops and observers serving in current missions. Some of the major contributions were in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Bosnia, Congo and Liberia.

As the world celebrates the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on May 29, this year Pakistan celebrates 50 years of participation in United Nations peacekeeping. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the opening of a photo exhibition celebrating 50 years of Pakistans participation in UN peacekeeping he hailed the dedication of the troops, police and civilian personnel who play a crucial role in helping people around the world recover from war. Peacekeeping is a credit to us thanks to the fine work of our troop-contributing countries, Pakistan a leader among them. The numbers tell only part of the story. The other part is played out in the lives of people recovering from war. From the women who are treated by female members of Pakistans medical unit to children who play football on fields constructed by Pakistani troops, the services rendered by brave Pakistani troops, police and civilian personnel deserve profound gratitude, said the Secretary-General at the gathering held at Pakistans Mission to the UN. Many only know about their role in the incident of 3rd October 1993 in Somalia which was also portrayed in the Hollywood movie Black Hawk Down. During operations carried out by the Task Force Ranger which consisted of an assault force made up of US Army Delta Force, Ranger teams, an air element provided by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, four Navy SEAL Team Six operators and members of the

Air Force Para rescue/Air Force Combat Controllers got stranded and had to be rescued by the Pakistani troops. The grim battle lasted eight hours, the US suffered 17 dead and 77 injured while one was captured, two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were shot down by RPGs and three others were damaged by warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidids forces. After their rescue the wounded were admitted to the Pakistani hospital at Soccer Stadium. Had it not been for the courage, valour and steadfastness of the Pakistani soldiers, the rescue operation could not have succeeded and the trapped US soldiers might have perished. Pakistanis themselves have gained tremendously from UN peace keeping missions and applied their acquired knowledge positively upon returning back home. One such individual is Ambassador Jamil Ahmed Khan who worked as a security advisor with the status of a diplomat in the United Nations, prior to that he served in the Police Service of Pakistan as chief of police and was also an army commissioned officer. He was Pakistans Ambassador to Libya from April 2009 to November 2010 is currently Pakistans Ambassador to UAE. Fifty years of this great contribution has not come without great cost 122 Pakistani military, police and civilian personnel have lost their lives while serving the cause of world peace. These were not just sons and daughters of Pakistan but they were also members of the United Nations family. The world mourns their deaths, the world remembers their lives and we all vow to carry forward their valiant work for peace just as

the father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam defined Pakistans foreign policy towards other countries of the world in 1948, as follows: Our foreign policy is one of friendliness and goodwill towards all the nations of the world. We believe in the principle of honesty and fair play in national and international dealings and are prepared to make our utmost contribution to the promotion of peace and prosperity among the nations of the world. Pakistan will never be found lacking in extending its material and moral support to the oppressed and suppressed peoples of the world and in upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.
