What is Post-Impressionism? - Post Impressionism is very hard to define - Post is After which therefore means after impressionism - Where did the name come from? - Its was coin by a Englishman ROGER FRY - Its Retrospective - Invented after the death of the all the Post Impression Artist in a country unrelated to the movement Main Artist of Post Impressionism - Cezanne - Was concern that art was no longer so serious >Cubism - Van Gogh - Using art to express himself and explain himself using color and paint > Expressionism - Gauguin -It was getting too complicated. Wanted to study art in a less developed society. Rejecting the west and civilization > Primitivism Cezanne : Can you track a painting by Picasso to Cezanne ? - First of the post impressionist - Painted a lot like the impressionist at the beginning - However, he felt that it was not the direction Art was directed to - He saw that art has became too shallow and he wanted to recapture the sense of order - He saw art as a Rational and Structured. - Dedicated his life to how we see. - The Basket of Apples (1895) - Mount Sainte Victoire (1885) - Reducing the structure to cones and sphere - Creating foreground and background - Still Life with Cupid (1895) - Everything was constructed from the cone, cylinder and a sphere 1. Returning art to the basics of how we see 2. Looking at the solidity and performance of the object 3. Painting in a multi-perspective (Painting the object more then one spot then one time) - Why cant we see from more then one angle (Breaking the foundations of Art) - Cezanne planted the seeds Picasso picked up form it - Art moving away from being a copy of the real world - Its now a interpretation of the world 4. Alternative to linear perceptive using color HOW does this link to Picasso - The Ladies of Avignon - Shattered picture painting - Taking Cezannes concept further - Primitive forms of art with the ladies in some of the African like mask - Greek structures

- The influence of primitive art and the influence of the multipoint perspective - Evolution not revolution - Traditions subject matter - background foreground, frozen moment in time, perfect bodies GONE - Subject matter becoming less important and Technique - ART is not an accident. Its carefully compose constructed and arranged. Van Gogh - The Idea of expression through the paint and canvass - Personal art done to express himself -Yellow=Happy . Blue=Turmoil - The world you cant see Using technique over subject matter as means of communication - How you put paint of the canvass is more important (Starry Starry Night) - The Scream ( Edvard Munch) Paul Gauguin - Today we have poison art. Trying to put a price of art that it is destroyed. Art is reduced - Going back to the savages , societies that has no art school, organized religions. - Because art has a function in those society - Looking for primitive civilization - Attempting to unlearn art of modernity and pick up the art of the primitive - Gauguin believed that pure art can be found in primitive society EXAM: 1. Post Impressionism : Knowledge of the name and the artist involved and what they said and what they tried to achieved. Do all three of the artist involved? 2. Picasso : When u look at the painting at first you will not like it. Past and Present and its connection to Picasso
