History was made this past week when Radford University became an All-Steinway institution. On Thursday, September 15, 2011 there was a ceremony honoring the distinction of this new title. Founded in 1853 in New York, Steinway and Sons pianos have been reputed as one of the nest makers of pianos in the world. Steinway is comparable to RollsRoyce or Mercedes; they are the top of the line names in the car industries, said Chairman of the Department of Music, Al Wojtera. Whereas, Steinway is the leader in pianos and because of that brand name it is going to reect excellence and high quality for the university. It is something that will be felt throughout the university and in other departments as well, Wojtera said. Oberlin Conservatory paved the way for other schools in 1877 by becoming the rst All-Steinway school. Following in those footsteps are 130 or so schools worldwide, including the Julliard School, Yale School of Music, George Mason University, and James Madison University. Steinway is recognized as the leader in quality and excellence, Wojtera said. For one grand piano, it takes over one year to be built. In order to become an All-Steinway institution, 90 percent of the pianos at that school must be Steinway pianos. Radford University has 37 Steinway pianos, 16 of which are grand pianos. In the near future, signs will be posted around campus designating which buildings contain Steinway pianos.

As Moffett Hall gets a make-over, some students are able to live in Greenhill Apartments which offer a scenic view of the New River and sizable rooms. Greenhill is away from campus, down on the river. Our apartments have more space than the usual, Said Jodie Dunn of Greenhill apartments. The newly renovated apartments got their spruceup in the spring of 2011. Each apartment is fully furnished and each tenant has a separate lease. With Moffett hall being renovated and the largest freshman class coming in, there just wasnt enough room on campus, so Greenhill stepped in to house

With over 100 years of history Radford University has changed a lot since it was founded in 1910 as The State and Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford. The Tartan looks back in RU history this week. Radford University was founded as The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford. According to an exhibit in the McConnell Library, Normal Schools were modeled after the teacher training schools of Prussia, Holland and France. Normal schools were publicly funded teacher training schools and provided a broader curriculum including courses in vocational and agricultural training and liberal arts studies. According to the same exhibit, Normal Schools began to establish in America near the time period of the 1920s, as many education reformers [believed] that the success of a republican form of government depended upon an educated populace. According to the library exhibit, these schools were often located in rural areas and provided affordable higher education to those generally excluded by class, race or gender. At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century there was an increased demand for better-qualified teachers because more students had access to secondary schools, according to
