Republic of Croatia

• External debt: 30 billion $ or app 83% of GDP,

• Internal state debt: 55 billion of Kunas,
• Number of unemployed: 308.000 (rate of 22%),
• Export-import ratio: app 47%,
• GDP per capita´: app 8.500 $,
• GDP growth per year: app 4,5%,
• Industrial manufacturing growth of 5,1%
• Work productivity in industry: 3,6%

1. Overview of the recent issues in the
interim Republic of Croatia

Republic Croatia has an excellent geo-traffic and geo-strategic position

1. Sea depth near operative coast is up to 30 m.

2. Economically developed countries in the primary gravitational zone which traffic

demand is estimated at app 6 Mil TEU – 37 Mil t/y up to 2025

3. International public transportation represents a key input for development of

Croatian traffic and economic system

4. Croatia develops new intermodal nodes in port hinterlands where it ensures

conditions for construction of new factories for industrial production of goods, new
rail stations and international navigable channels.

5. By providing different VAS to goods in the international public traffic, Croatia

expects GDP growth > 4.5% directly from traffic industry.

Basic functions of Croatian intermodal nodes

Almost all intermodal logistic centres in Croatia have a status of:

• (1) Public international traffic nodes and
• (2) Free zones
Own four basic functions:
• Traffic
• Industrial
• Commercial and
• Distributive
• Strategically they connect Western Europe (the EU) – with Near and
Far East as the biggest world markets

shipping” company that operates in Rijeka port.

2. Development of container trains Rijeka – Budapest – Prague, Rijeka – Zagreb –

Belgrade, Rijeka – Ljubljana – Vienna respectively Munich.

3. Construction of “Blue rail” Rijeka – Raša – Italy (Venice) and new RO-RO and
HUCKEPACK terminals on the area of port basin Raša-Bršica in Istria.

4. New railway line for transportation of alive cattle from countries of North, East,
partially West and South Europe to terminals for alive animals in port basin

interim 5. Conclusions

1.Republic Croatia is confronted with numerous traffic and economic difficulties.

2.For solving economic and transitional problems Croatia should use FDI (Foreign Direct
Investments).

3.For attracting the FDI Croatia uses development of the modern intermodal nodes where it
ensures conditions for providing the numerous services (logistics) of VAS for the
international public traffic goods since it owns enormous comparative advantages for
attracting the new international traffic on its strategic traffic routes.

4.Latest researches indicate that container traffic demand on the North Adriatic area is
estimated at app 6 Mil t/y up to 2025 respectively it exceeds 37 Mil t of cargo up to 2025.

5.Croatia constructs big parent container terminal in Rijeka port, new two-track railway
Rijeka-Hungary, new navigable channel Vukovar-Šamac, new intermodal nodes near main
traffic routes and international corridors – more than 70% of new arriving traffic demand
are prognosed at Croatian territory.

6.Liner sea and rail routes are being introduced between sea ports and their gravitational
fore-land and hinterland.

interim 6. Contribution to regional
development aims

Which strategic goals the Republic of Croatia can and should achieve
through the development of intermodal system?
1. Traffic growth of bulk cargo for 10 – 15 m tons yearly in the next mid-term
developing period - up to 2015

2. More then 5,5 billion Euros for new foreign currency income per year,

3. More then 150.000 new work places,

4. Decrease of import and increase of export for more then 35% in comparison to
the existing situation,

5. GDP increase for 3,5 – 5% in comparison to the present situation,

6. Income growth for state budget and budgets of local self-regulation units on
main traffic routes for more then 1,5 million Euros yearly,

7. GDP growth for more then 12.000 EUR per capita',

8. Decrease of foreign assignment, return of the accepted foreign debt rates etc.
