Steel is the most important multifunctional and most adaptable of material. The development of humanity would have been impossible but steel the back born of development economics has was laid on the strength and inherent used of steel. Steel is an alloy of iron and small percentage of carbon and other elements in varying percentage with the increase in carbon content, the strength, hardness & brittleness of steel increase and ductility of the material. Steel compared to other material of its type of low production cost the energy required for extracting iron from ore is 25% of what is needed for extracting aluminum steel is environment friendly as it can recycled 5.6% of elements iron is present in earths crust, representing a secure raw material base. Steel production is 200 times higher as compared to production of ferrous metals put together. Different type of steels is obtained by varying composition. In general they are classifying as mild steel, medium carbon steel ,high carbon steel and low allow steel are generally used for steel structure. Iron & steel are the worlds cheapest and most useful metals.these4 are the durable metals are using in making 100s of products from paperclips to cars machine made of iron and steel help to produce almost everything we use on daily basis to meet personnel needs domestic requirements. Steel is produced by refining iron and alloying it with other metals. Iron maybe through of as fine basis material of steel. Iron & steel industry is one among the worlds most vital industry employing large number of people. Iron & got its industrial origin in India in 1874; it was during that period the 1st iron & steel industry in India in Barracker. Iron works was started in Bengal. But the real growth of industry took place only in 1907, when sri. Jemeshedji Tata started TATA IRON AND STEEL COMPANY LTD.(TISCO)

During April-December 2005-06 production of finished steel recorded a growth of 4%.Over the corresponding period of the previous year to reach 28.3 million tones. This growth rate, however, was lower than the growth rate in the preceding two years. Consumption of finished steel grew by 5.9% and increased to 24.9 million tones during the same period. World steel prices rise from December 2001 onwards. The price increase of hot rolled (HR) coils, during January 2002 to December 2004 was from US$140-175 per tone to about US$ 550-600 per tone. The prices of steel melting scrap rise from a low of US$ 1993-94 per tone to US$ 275-285 per tone. China remained the worlds largest crude steel producer in 2006 also (349.5 million metric tone).followed by Japan (112.47 million metric tones) and USA (93.89 million metric tones).India occupied the 8th position (38.008 million metric tones). In 2005 world crude steel output at 1129.4 million metric tones was 509% more than the previous year.

CHAPTER II

PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION
Production, in economics, all those activities that have to do with the creation of commodities, by imparting to raw materials utility, added value, or the ability to satisfy human wants. Production is the conversation of input in to output. The factors of production and all other things which the producer buys to carryout production are called input. The goods and services produced are known as output. Thus production is the activity that creates or adds utility and value. According to Edwood Buffa;production is a process by which goods and services are created. Production was the major thrust of industry until at least the beginning of the 20th century, when sales and marketing began to be considered as equally important in the transference of commodities from producers of consumers. For most kinds of production in modern society, large amounts of capital in the form of machinery are required. Equally essential are land and its natural resources from which the raw materials are obtained and labour which with the aid to capital, extracts and transforms the raw materials. It is the formal that adds value to goods and services, including creation transport and warehousing until used production is an organized process with specific goals. Plant Location Plant location is one of the major factor that determine the smooth and successful running of the business. The plant should be located in such a place where there are good communication, transportation, infrastructure, information technology development etc. The location of a plant will be select by the availability of the raw materials, distribution cost, weather conditions, flood and fire protection etc. The plant Merry peekay rolling mills (pvt) Ltd is located in a city known as the city of hospitality- Kozhikode. The plant is located over here because of direct access to national highway 17,which stretches through the heart of kerala from cochin to manglore.The calicut railway station is mere 5.k.ms from factory. Generally the selection of

the plant depends upon some other factors such as given below.

Reduction in wage difference between regions. Better mobility of workers and management. Improvements in construction methods and design of factory plant. The policy of the government to remove regional imbalances in industrial development between regions. Expansion of market.

Plant Lay-Out After the selection of the location or site the next step is to construct factory building in that site. The arrangement of plant and equipments, departments etc depends upon the availability of the floor space inside the factory building. So, due importance should be given for space, special requirements etc to arrange factory and plant layout while constructing the building. The factory layout and factory construction should be considered simultaneously. The activities connected with factory layout are given below. Office area in which administration department is to be accommodated. Plant area, which accommodate production departments and service departments. Technical service like receiving departments, stock room, store room, tool room, inspection department, power house, material handling equipments. Personnel service like parking area, canteen, lunchroom, recreation room, rest room etc. Design of the building The type of material for construction Type of building The management will utilize the service of the experts or architects,

engineers to ensure that the above aspects are given due consideration. The equipments in the peekay rolling mills pvt Ltd is arrange in such a way that unnecessary movements of the workers can be avoided and the time or working hours can be effectively utilized.

Material Handling System The material Handling involves the movement of Materials from One Section to another for the purpose of Processing. They can be moved either manually or mechanically. For this purpose different types of material handling equipments are used. The material handling system in any manufacturing setting plays an important part in the performance of the entire manufacturing system. According to American Material Handling Society, Material Handling is the art and science involving the movement, Packing and Storing of substances in any form. Material handling equipments are used for lifting, moving, dropping, positioning, releasing and stacking materials. Mechanical handling as a branch of material handling covers the use of mechanical aids in the movement, storage and handling of materials. Mechanical handling is of great use for transporting heavy goods, movement of delicate goods, keeping awkward objects mobile avoidance of production stoppage and movement of goods safety around corners. The efficient handling and storing of materials is vital to industry. These operations provide a continuous flow of raw materials, parts and assemblies through the workplace, and ensure that materials are available when needed. Steel making is by melting various grades of good quality scrap, hot briquetted iron,heavy multi scrap,direct reduced iron.The rawmaterials are used to purchase from America and it is carried through ship to cochin.From cochin to factory it is carried through the container.In the factory this container will unload the raw materials in the furnus shed of the factory.Atlast the magnet will pick the rawmaterials and put it in the furnus for production process.

Work study Managing people within the organization is a highly complex activity.In this organization both people and machines are given equal importance.The machines are maintained very well.Likewise people are managed in an efficient manner in this organization.Work study is done effective in this orgnisation to raise output,quality,reduce wastage,enhance reliability and ensure safety. In this company the supervision is done very well.The supervisory staff is the company employees itself.Production is looked after by contractors.For producing one ton they have to pay to contractors.The company staffs are organized in American pattern. The workers are given annual leave, declared holidays,every Sundays is also given leave to them.Salary is paid to employees on the basis of their performance and also extra salary is given to them if they work overtime.Every year performance appraisal is done by higher officer and increments are given.Yearly two bonus, insurance,BSI and provident fund is paid.Company pay good salary to all workers.

PRODUCTION PROCESS
Production process involves the conversion of rawmaterials in to finished product.The rawmaterials are purchased from U.S.A.The rawmaterials used for the process of TMT bars are shreaded scrap,hot briquette iron,heavy multi scrap,direct reduced iron. These rawmaterials are melted at 1500 c.At 1550 c it is in a liquid form and check the sample and find whether the chemistry is correct.When the chemistry is correct,they will make the ingots. The ingots will be 95.k.g.These ingots are taken in to rolling mills.In induction furnus it is reheated.Furnus oil is used in it.It is heated up to 1100 cc to 1150 c.This is rolled and after rolling it

is passed through quenching process.After a precisely monitored quenching process,each TMT bar is moved to a cooling bed for proper self-tempering.The sophisticated cooling bed ensures that each and every barr proceed to individual slots for self tempering.Thus the bar do not touch each other and a uniform cooling is attained. A critical aspect of TMT process is the cooling of the individual bars after the quenching process. Only a perfectly cooled steel bar will have the qualities of a genuine TMT viz a Perfect Round Shape, Perfect Micro Structure and Superior Strength.

THE TEMPCORE PROCESS The re-bar leaving the last stand of hot rolling passes through a special water cooling section. The cooling is such that a surface layer of the bar is quenched into martensite, the core remaining austenitic. The quenching treatment is stopped when a determined thickness of martensite has been formed under the skin. The re-bar leaves the drastic cooling section, the temperature gradient established in its cross section causes heat to flow from the centre to the

surface. This results in self tempering of martensite. Finally, during the slow cooling of the re-bar on the cooling bed, austentic core transforms into ferrite and pearlite. Peekay TMT is produced by the world's most advanced technology licensed

from Centre de Recherches Metallurgiques (CRM), Belguim, inventors of this process. Tempcore processes are being successfully used in most parts of the developed world. TMT are produced in two grades: TMT 415 and TMT 500. The numbers indicate the proof stress. Because of the unique manufacturing process, TMT bars exhibit an excellent combination of strength and ductility that far exceeds the minimum limits specified by IS:1786. Typical values for yield strength are as high as 465 N/mm2 for TMT (as against IS standards, 415 N/mm2). Ductility as measured by elongation is 21% min (as against standards 14.5% min)..

Excellent bond strength The specially designed deformation pattern of Peekay TMT ensures excellent bond strength between the bars and the surrounding concrete. Typical values of the strength are 200% to 800% more than mild steel plain re-bars as against conventional cold twisted bars that have 86% to 627% more strength than MS plain bars. (Specifications require 40% more bond strength than MS plain bars) Bendability It often happens that for reasons inherent in building techniques, reinforcing steel has to be bent and restrengthened. The tough outer surface and ductile core of TMT bars result in a rebar of excellent strength and bendablity. The bar can be bent and rebent around very small mandrels of 2d and 4d respectively. The advantage at construction sites is obvious. The table below shows that these figures are much superior to IS 1786. Weldability Nowadays, pre-fabricated re-inforcements are increasingly used in all fields of construction. For reasons of profitability these requirements are assembled by welding. User requirements of weldability of re-bars are, therefore, increasing. The low carbon content ensures excellent weldability superior to conventional cold twised bars. All main welding process can be used. Bars can be buttwelded or lap-welded using ordinary rutile coated electrodes of matching strength. No pre-heating or post heating treatment is necessary in case of manual arc welding.

Resistance to corrosion

The TMT process, unlike cold twisting, leaves no torsional stresses in the bar. This result in better corrosion resistant characteristics in TMT compared to conventional cold twised bars Dimensional tolerance Peekay TMT bars are certified to IS:1786-1985 dimensional tolerance. FINANCE DEPARTMENT

INTRODUCTION
Finance is the life blood of the organization. In a firm finance bears as equal position to that of production and marketing. Finance activity of the firm mainly concerned with acquiring the working capital it needs for production purpose and employees it in such activities which produce maximum returns on invested capital. Balance sheet and profit and loss accounts are the main financial information in PEEKAY ROLLING MILLS PVT LTD.Balance sheet provides the complete summary of the financial resources, obligations and measure liquidity and solvency. While the profit and loss account provides the brief idea about the income and the expenditure during the period of functioning out of which the working capital or the profitability of the company can be determined. The company is also maintaining bank reconciliation statement every month.

Functions The department has all the responsibility to manage financial affairs and to accounts the financial transaction in the books of the company. All the payment and receipt are done through finance department. The department has the responsibility to pay off all the wages and salaries The functions of the finance department includes the verification of vouchers receipt, sale invoice purchase bills cash or bank book, journals, ledgers etc. The function also include verification and management of closing stock of raw materials, work in progress, finished goods, consumables, other input etc; they are also responsible for preparation of plans register for providing depreciation at the end of the financial year.

Since the department is directly under Managing Director, it has to take the decisions in the following matters. Besides the fundamental duty of raising and allocation of funds profit planning and understanding capital market are the responsibility of the department. The main responsibilities of the

department are following: All financial activity like collection and the payment etc Raising income To make all statutory payments To make proper cash planning Maintain economic stability in the company Entry of all expense in accounts book Prepare balance sheet and profit and loss account etc Maintain all kind of books of accounts To make timely payment of wages and salaries to employees To conduct top management meeting for providing advices, about production target and sales targets To keep management abstract of the position of the company regarding cash efficiency All the transactions of Peeekay Rolling Mills Pvt Ltd is made through computers.The company wants to know the financial position of their business on a particular date.The business men is not able to remember all the transactions that had taken place in the company mainly chooses computers. They are using the computers inorder to avoid any fraudulent activities.Every day sales has been done . All the sales is through bills.Details about every day sales is clearly entered into the computers.At any moment the details of sales are available to the management. All the transactions are done through bank.Daily sales are done and the amount of sales are gone to the bank.Therefore we can understand that all the transactions of this company is done through bank. Now we can go through the sales of Peekay rolling mills (P) ltd in last few years.

The other goals can be achieved automatically if the financial management follows the goal of wealth maximization. So the financial manager is responsible for maximizing the wealth of shareholders. Investment decision, financial decisions and dividend decisions are the three major areas where financial management focuses its attention, constitute the scope of financial management Functions of Finance Manager The functions of finance manager may be divided into two groups: A. Executive or Managerial functions. B. Routine functions. (A)Executive or Managerial functions These functions relate to financial, investment and dividend decision-making. These functions require administration skill in

planning, financial competence and technical forecasting on the part of financial executive. The following are the important executive functions: Financial forecasting and planning. Procurement of funds. Investment Decision. Management of income. Management of cash. Decision upon borrowing policies. Negotiations for new financing. Analysis and appraisal of financial performance. Advising the top management. Co-ordination and control. Helping in valuation decisions. Tax administration.

(B)Routine Functions These are functions of routine nature. These functions do not require any specialized administrative skill. These are performed by lower level assistants like clerks etc. these functions are important for execution of decision taken by executives. The following are some of the routine functions. Record keeping and reporting. Preparation of financial statements. Managing cash balance. Cash planning and credit management. Safeguarding the valuable, securities, insurance policies etc. Providing top management with information on current and prospective financial conditions of the business.

The financial management of this company is done properly by the finance department of the company.Since the department is organized efficiently all the work under this department can be done without any fail.The department heads may prepare the balance sheet of every year and may identify whether the business is profitable or loss.All the computer transactions related to finance is also managed by the finance department.All the accounting process is also done by the department in an efficient manner.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT

INTRODCTION
Quality, through familiar to every one is one of the most important issues that all sectors have focused on in the last 10-30 years. As markets have been come much more competitive, quality has become a prime focus of business attention because of the impact it has on sustained performance and customer satisfaction. Quality is a relative term. It is generally used with reference to the end use of the product. Quality is fitness for use. According to ISO. Quality is the totally characteristics of an entry that bear on its ability to satisfy stated and implied needs. Quality control department has the responsibility to control and maintain the quality of the output (Billets) and to grade it according to BIS standard and reporting it to the production department. The department has full - fledged metallurgical laboratory to perform this task. During refining the samples are analyzed according top the levels of the samples analyzed. The products of the company are every time subjected to the most stringent and uncompromising quality control test.Peekay Rolling Mills (P) Ltd. is South India's only producer of Fe 500 grade TMT bars. INTRODUCTION
The term HRM means that the company departments charged with finding, screening, recruiting and training job applicants, and as well as administrating employee benefit programs. As companies recognize to gain competitive edge, human resources plays a key role in helping companies deal with a fast changing competitive environment and the greater demand for quality employees. Research conducted by the Conference Board has found six key people related activities that HR completes to add value to a company. Effectively managing and utilizing people Trying to competencies Developing competencies that enhance individual and organizational performance Increasing the innovation, creativity and flexibility necessary to enhance competencies Appling new approaches to process design, Succession planning, Career development and Inter Organizational mobility. Managing the implementation and integration of technology through improved staffing, training, and communication with employees. Personnel management is not a one man responsibility, nor can it ever be achieved by once individual. It is co-operative endeavor that should stem from a common feeling & concept and should progress in a unified co-ordinate manner. Personnel department of Peekay Rolling Mills workers are efficiently and effectively. The personnel department of Peekay Rolling Mills aims at ensuring steady human resource, which can contribute to the successful the enterprise. The existence of an undertaking depends upon the competent co-operative and dedicated performance of its personnel. Employees of Peekay Rolling Mills classified as:-

The maintenance department is divided in to two sections:Electrical section, and Mechanical section ELECTRICAL SECTION

The main function of the department is electrical maintenance. It includes break down maintenance, preventive maintenance and periodical checking. Breakdown maintenance Breakdown maintenance under takes the job of maintaining and repairing the machinery break down or disaster happened. This section is helpful to maintain such problems by mending them temporarily and thus the production function will continue smoothly with out any delays. Preventive maintenance This includes the ordinary works of the company shortly to save company from unforeseen problems due to the electrical disorders.
