EAST JORDAN e Charlevoix
Rayders volleyball team accom-
plished a couple of things last week,
as they won their third district title
in a row and in the process, set a new
school record for wins in a season as
they stand 46-4-6 headed for the re-
gionals in Kalkaska.
On ursday, November 3, the
Rayders and the Ramblers of Boyne
City met in the fnals, with
Charlevoix earning the victory 25-
13, 25-11, 25-20.
It feels great winning districts for
the third year in a row, Charlevoix
coach Liz Shaw said. ese two
wins also help to break and surpass
the record for total wins on the sea-
son with 46-4-6, and we are playing
some of our best team ball.
Charlevoix served tough all night
making it harder for us to set up our
oense, Boyne City coach Casie
Parker said. ey are an experi-
enced team, and their setter (Jenna
Way) is one of the best in the state.
We have two of the best blockers in
the conference, but with Jenna set-
ting, it was hard to tell where they
were going with the ball.
Charlevoix was led by Jenna Way
with 20 assists and 16 digs, while
Megan Peters had 12 kills and one
dig.
Also for the Rayders, Kelly Greyer-
biehl fnished with 21 digs and four
aces; Karley Pearsall had fve kills
and three blocks; Chelsie Homan
added 14 digs; Jennaca Holecheck
had three aces; and Anna Way and
Madeline Boss each had three kills.
Kelsey Way was 12-of12 on serve re-
ception and added four digs and
seven kills.
Jenna Way is doing a great job
moving the ball around the net.
Shaw noted. Her ability to do so re-
ally makes it dicult for the blockers
to get a double block on our hitters,
also, our defense is playing the best it
has all season, we are scrappy and re-
ally work together well.
e main dierence from the be-
ginning of the season until now is
my defensive players are very disci-
plined about staying outside the
block and have worked hard to read
the angle of the attacker to position
themselves in the best spot to dig the
ball up, Shaw added. is week we
have Forest Area on Tuesday, if we
continue to play hard and execute
our oense while minimizing our
mental errors, I am confdent we will
leave the court feeling good about or
play.
e Ramblers close out their sea-
son 19-21-8, and were led by,
Heather Nichols with 15 assist,
Ketrin Hocquard had 13 digs, and
Kylie Hicks added nine kills and fve
blocks
All in all we had a great season,
Boyne coach Parker said. e com-
petition in this area is getting better
and better, we also had some great
leadership this year which was nice
since we have a lot of young girls on
the team.

Infuenza has arrived in northwest
Michigan and is one the rise accord-
ing to local public health ocials.
Over the last three weeks, schools re-
porting fu-like illness to the
Health Department of Northwest
Michigan have steadily increased.
Last week, nearly 200 students were
absent from school in Antrim,
Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego
counties with fu symptoms.
e single best way to prevent
getting the fu is to get vaccinated
every year, said Joshua Meyerson,
MD, Medical Director for the Health
Department of Northwest Michigan.
ats why the Health Department
oers Community Immunization
Clinics throughout the four-county
health district. Meyerson said ap-
pointments for fu vaccine, and many
other vaccines, are still available at
three clinics:
Tuesday, November 8 at Petoskey
Middle School at 4 PM to 7 PM.
ursday, November 10, at Gay-
lord Intermediate School at 4 PM to
7 PM
Saturday, November 19 at North
Central Michigan College at 10 AM
to 2 PM (at the Health & Fitness
Fair)
To schedule an appointment at any
of the Community Immunization
Clinics, call the Health Department
of Northwest Michigan at 800-432-
4121 during regular business hours.
e charge for fu vaccine at Health
Department clinics is $25; charges
for additional vaccines vary. We can
bill Medicare, Medicaid, and several
private health insurance companies
for immunizations, said Pat Fralick,
the Health Departments Director of
Family & Community Health. Fral-
ick said the Health Department does
not turn away anyone age 18 or
younger for inability to pay for im-
munizations required for school.
She noted anyone under age 18 must
have their parent or guardian accom-
pany them for immunizations.
Fralick highly recommends mak-
ing appointments at the Community
Immunization Clinics. We do quite
a lot of preparation to make sure
people can get in and out as quickly
as possible, she said. When we
know how many are coming, we can
bring plenty of vaccine and have ade-
quate nursing sta. We can also
identify any other vaccines individu-
als may need by checking Michigan
Care Improvement Registry in ad-
vance and give them at that same ap-
pointment.
In addition to annual fu vaccina-
tion, other actions to take to avoid
the fu are
Avoid close contact with people
who are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose.
oroughly clean your hands.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or
mouth.
Infuenza viruses are spread when
someone who is sick with the fu
coughs, sneezes, or speaks,
releasing viruses into the air for
other people to breathe. When these
viruses enter the nose, throat, or
lungs, they begin to multiply, causing
disease. e viruses can also be
spread when a person touches a sur-
face with fu viruses on it and then
touches his/her nose or mouth.
e Health Department of North-
west Michigan is mandated by the
Michigan Public Health Code to pro-
mote wellness, prevent disease, pro-
vide quality healthcare, address
health problems of vulnerable popu-
lations, and protect the environment
for the residents and visitors of
Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Ot-
sego counties. For additional infor-
mation, or to schedule a fu vaccine
appointment, call the Health Depart-
ment at 800-432-4121.
For more information about fu
vaccine, visit www.cdc.gov/fu. To
schedule an appointment at a Com-
munity Immunization Clinic, call the
Health Department at 800-432-4121
during regular business hours.

A recent report by the Biodiversity Research Institute,
Great Lakes Commission and the University of Wisconsin-La
Crosse cited that while environmental controls have limited
the amount of new mercury pollution in our Great Lakes re-
gion, the levels of mercury found in some species of fsh in
local waterways have continued to increase.
Most locally-caught fsh are a healthful, low-fat source of
protein and can be safely eaten. However, consumption of
some fsh should be limited. For this reason, the Michigan
Department of Community Health (MDCH) issues the
Michigan Fish Advisory to help people choose fsh that are
low in mercury and other contaminants.
With the evidence of increasing mercury levels in some
areas, its important for local residents to consult the Michi-
gan Fish Advisory when deciding which fsh to consume,
said Joshua Meyerson, MD, Medical Director for the Health
Department of Northwest Michigan.
Unlike other chemicals sometimes found in fsh, you can-
not reduce the amount of mercury in fsh by cleaning and
cooking it a certain way. You also cannot see or taste mercury
in fsh. e only way to detect mercury in fsh is by having it
tested by a laboratory.
is is why flets from fsh taken from lakes and rivers
around the state are tested each year for mercury and other
chemicals at the MDCH Laboratory. e results from these
tests allow MDCH to determine which species of fsh are
more likely to have higher levels of mercury than others.
MDCH uses the test results from the fsh flets to develop
consumption advice that protects everyone who eats the fsh.
e results, published in the Michigan Fish Advisory, can
help you choose fsh that are safe to eat for your entire family.
Since Michigan has more than 11,000 lakes, streams and
rivers to fsh in, not all bodies of water have had fsh tested for
mercury. e MDCH Statewide Mercury Advisory provides
general information on safe fsh to eat from lakes that have
not been tested and included in the Michigan Fish Advisory.
You can use the MDCH Eat 8 tool to help you select store-
bought fsh that are lower in mercury. Eat 8 features com-
monly purchased fsh that have been assigned points based
on the amount of mercury reported by the United States Food
and Drug Administration. Eat eight points or less per month
to stay within the accepted limits of mercury consumption to
avoid health eects.

health problems of vulnerable populations, and protect the

Local public health ocials are
reminding everyone to be safe
this winter and not put families
in danger of being poisoned by
carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is an odor-
less, colorless, and tasteless gas
that kills more than 500 Ameri-
cans each year and up to 50 a
year n Michigan. It is produced
by all forms of combustion. Car-
bon monoxide poisoning is com-
pletely preventable. Warning
signs include headache, nausea,
vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness,
and confusion.
Now is the time to ensure that
gas-fred furnaces, hot water
heaters, and carbon monoxide
detectors are working properly,
said Joshua Meyerson, MD, Med-
ical Director for the Health De-
partment of Northwest
Michigan. Carbon monoxide is
dicult to detect so its important
to evacuate the area of contami-
nation immediately and seek
medical attention if you suspect
you have been exposed to carbon
monoxide.
Never use generators, grills,
camp stoves, or other gasoline or
charcoal-burning devices inside
your home, basement, garage or
near a window because these ap-
pliances give o carbon monox-
ide. Running a car in an enclosed
garage can create lethal levels of
carbon monoxide in minutes.
Michigans carbon monoxide
poisoning tracking system
counted 39 unintentional deaths
and 1,340 non-fatal uninten-
tional carbon monoxide poison-
ings in Michigan in 2009 alone.
More than 60 percent occurred
during the winter months and
happened most frequently at
home.

lems of vulnerable populations,

adjoining, and spacious kitchen area.

is is the best
time to buy a
home. Home prices
are more aordable than theyve
been in decades and mortgage rates
are at all time lows. Even if you were
able to qualify 3 years ago, and even
if your credit score has not changed,
you may not be able to qualify today.
ere are 2 main reasons why peo-
ple are not able to buy a home, but
there is also hope and the American
dream of home ownership might
still be within your reach.
You may be one of millions of
people who have recently been
turned down for a home loan by the
bank. One of the most common rea-
sons good people get turned down
for a loan is because they have less
than perfect credit.
1. Less an Perfect Credit. If you
notice, I didnt say bad credit. A
few years ago, banks were lending to
everyone who wanted a loan. Banks
were lending to people who had
credit scores in the mid 500s just a
short while ago. Just recently it was
announced that the minimum credit
score, yes the minimum for a FHA
backed mortgage is 640. But, even if
you have a score in the mid to high
600s, you may still be required to
put down a hey down payment. A
score of 720 or higher is considered
good credit, and is whats required
for a low-down payment loan today.
ere are many reasons that
credit scores can become less than
perfect. Maybe you have had a bad
event in your life such as a medical
emergency or a divorce. ese
events may be unavoidable, but
wreak havoc on a credit score.
Maybe you pay your bills on time,
but you have had to run up the bal-
ances on some credit cards so the
bank runs its formula and tells you
that your debt to income ratio is too
high. Maybe you were a victim of
the economic recession and lost
your job, but youve been diligent
and found a new job, but because of
being out of work you missed some
payments on some of your accounts.
e banks dont look at your situa-
tion and give you a break, they run
your credit through their automated
system and if the result comes back
less than perfect, you dont qualify.
2. Not Enough Cash. Even if you
do have perfect credit, 100% loans
are hard to come by today. You see,
banks got into a lot of trouble with
the easy lending standards of the
past by loaning too much money on
houses. Banks used to loan 90%,
95%, 100% and even more of the
value of the home that secured the
mortgage, and then when the econ-
omy turned and people had trouble
making their payments, the banks
had to take big losses on these loans.
Lending standards have changed,
the pendulum has swung far back
the other way and banks are more
heavily regulated than ever before. If
you do not have an extra 5 to 10
grand burning a hole in your pocket
and a credit score in the mid 700s,
youre going to be hard pressed to
qualify for an average, modest home
for your family.
You see, no one teaches us this
credit game in school, but it is
something that aects our entire
lives. It is like coming onto the feld
in the middle of a football game
without knowing the rules. It is im-
possible to win a game you dont
know how to play. Once you know
the rules, however, you can not only
compete, but you can win!
