Math 180.1 Formulation Problems Please define your variables and each constraint carefully.

1) A canning company is contracted to receive 60,000 lb. of ripe tomatoes at 7 cents/lb from which it produces both canned tomato juice and tomato paste. The canned products are packaged in cases of 24 cans each. A single can of juice requires 1 lb of fresh tomatoes whereas the paste requires 1/3 lb only. The companys share of the market is limited to 2000 cases of juice and 6000 cases of paste. The wholesale prices per case of juice and paste stand at $18 and $9, respectively. Device a production scheduling for the company.. 2) A certain company is considering two advertising media for promotion/launching of its product. Currently radio ads cost P16,000 each, while newspaper ads cost P24,000 each. The total budget for the advertising campaign is P285,000 per week. The president of the company wants the total number of ads to be at least 15, with at least two of each type of media, and there should be no more than 19 ads in total. Also, the president does not want the number of newspaper ads to exceed the number of radio ads by more than 25%. If each newspaper ad reaches 6,000 people, 50% of which will respond; while each radio ad reaches 2,000 people, 20% of which will respond. Formulate an LP for this problem if the company wishes to reach as many respondents as possible while meeting all the constraints stated.

3) A bank makes four kinds of loan to its personal customer and these loans yield the following annual interest rates to the bank : First mortgage - 14% Second mortgage - 20% Home improvement - 20% Personal overdraft 10% The bank has a maximum forseeable lending capacity of $250 million and is further constraint by the policies : a) first mortgages must be at least 55% of all mortgages issued and at least 25% of all loans issued (in $ terms ) b) second mortgages cannot exceed 25% of all loans issued (in $ terms) c) to avoid public displeasure and the introduction of a new windfall tax the average interest rate on all loans must not exceed 15%. Formulate an LP for this problem if the bank wishes to maximize the return while satisfying the policies.

4) A radio assembly plant produces two models Hi-Fi 1 and Hi-Fi2, on the same assembly line. The assembly line consists of three stations. The assembly times in the workstations are Workstation 1 2 3 Minutes per unit of : Hi-Fi 1 Hi-Fi 2 6 4 5 5 4 6

Each workstation has a maximum availability of 480 minutes per day. However, the workstations require daily maintenance which amounts to 10%, 14%, and 12% of the 480 minutes daily availability for stations 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The company wishes to determine the daily units to be assembled of Hi-Fi1 and Hi-FI2 to minimize the sum of unused (idle) time at all three workstations.

5) A cargo plane has three compartments for storing cargo: front, center and rear. These compartments have the following limits on both weight and space : Compartment Front Center Rear Weight capacity (tons) 10 16 8 Space Capacity (cubic meters) 600 8700 5300

Furthermore, the weight of the cargo in the respective compartments must be of the same proportion of the compartments weight capacity to maintain balance of the plane. The following four cargoes are available for shipment on the next flight: Cargo C1 C2 C3 C4 Weight (ton) 18 15 23 12 Volume(cubic meter/ton) 480 650 580 390 Profit ($/ton) 310 380 350 285

Any proportion of these cargoes can be accepted. The objective is to determine how much ( if any ) of each cargo C1 , C2 , C3 , and C4 should be accepted and how to distribute each among the compartments so that the total profit for the flight is maximized.

6) A steel company has two mines and three steel plants. Here is the relevant data.
Unit cost of shipping ore From mine to steel plant (cents per ton) From mine

1
9 14 71

2
16 29 133

3
28 19 96

Amount of ore available at mine (tons) 103 197

1 2
Tons of ore required at steel plant

Set up the model describing the shipping of ore from mines to steel plants that minimizes the total shipping bill.
