Introduction
The world is moving fast into the knowledge and innovation economy. Countries worldwide have begun making preparation to embrace the changing requirements stipulated by the new economy. Top on the agenda of requirements is the need to strengthen each countrys Science, Technology and Innovation framework, especially in South countries. STI are key drivers of the knowledge economy. Knowledge-driven industries now account for a major share of global economic growth. The future will witness further expansion in the knowledge-driven business where innovation is a major determinant of competitiveness. In recent decades, many South countries have become global ecomonic giants by adopting S&T innovations in the real economy of agriculture, infrastructure and manufacturing rather than generating paper wealth. There are valuable lessons South countries can share with one another. One of the priority objectives of UNESCO is to provide capacity building in science and technology through providing policy advice and exchange of experience and best practices. ISTIC is assisting UNESCO to accomplish this particular objective by South-South cooperation in STI. The following training workshop module details a five-day technopreneurship program to be conducted under the auspices of International Science and Technology Innovation Centre (ISTIC). The program is designed to train participants on the elements of entrepreneurship in relation to the demand of the knowledge and innovation economy. They will also be taught a systematic approach on how to create and build successful businesses which are based on and driven by technology.

Workshop Content
The workshop will deliberate on the following topics: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Understand principles and practices of entrepreneurship. Appreciate the basics of Identifying business opportunities. Distinguish the key elements for venture creation. Understand the key drivers of start-ups. Appreciate growth strategy, competition and business models. Understand the mechanics of marketing and sales. Ability to secure funding for the business. How to make impactful presentation of business plan. Negotiation for the best deals with financiers/industrialist.

Workshop Duration and Venue

The workshop will be held in duration of five days and will be held in USAINS, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia from 26 to 30 September 2011.

Number of Participants
A total of 40 participants will be selected. 20 participants will be from UNESCO member countries and 20 participants will be from Malaysia. The combination of participants from UNESCO member countries and Malaysian participants will allow for exchange of knowledge, ideas and experience as well as opportunities for discussions, networking and possible collaboration.

Criteria for Participants

The participants should posses the following criteria: Have at least Bachelors Degree (B.Sc) in Science/Engineering/Business. Those who have M.Sc or Ph.D in Science/Engineering/Business are preferred.

Participants should be passionately interested in knowing Intellectual Property Management matters and the related commercialization processes. Ideally they should be in possession of inventions or innovations which they are interested in commercializing or directors of commercialization unit of universities and R&D Institutes. Participants must have good command of English, both in verbal and writing. Participants must be in good health (A medical certificate must be submitted together with the application form).

Resource Persons
Resource persons will include experts from industry, as well as other local experts from universities and research institutions.

Modes of Delivery
The training workshop will be delivered by using the combinations of the following methods: Series of lectures. Group discussions and presentations. Case Studies.

Medium of Instruction
The training workshop will be conducted in English.

Certificates
Certificates will be awarded to participants upon successful completion of the course.

Allowances
All sponsored participants will be provided with accommodation, food, insurance and related transportation within Malaysia.

The creation of the International Science, Technology and Innovation, Centre for South-South Cooperation under the auspices of UNESCO (ISTIC) is a follow up of the Doha Plan of Action which has been adopted by the head of States and Government of the Group of 77 and China, during the meeting in Doha, Qatar, from 12-16 June 2005 on the occasion of the Second South Summit of the Group of 77. The Summit urged UNESCO to develop and implement a programme for South-South cooperation in science and technology with the objective of facilitating the integration of a developmental approach into national science and technology and innovation policies, capacity building in science and technology through providing policy advice and exchange of experience and best practices, and creating a problem solving network of centres of excellence in developing countries as well as supporting the exchange of students, researchers, scientists and technologists among developing countries. ISTIC will act as an international platform for South-South cooperation in science, technology and innovation and make use of the network of the G77 plus China and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). The overall goal of ISTIC is to increase the capacity for management of science, technology and innovation throughout developing countries. ISTIC Secretariat is hosted by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) for five years before making ISTIC an autonomous organization. UNESCO functions as a laboratory of ideas and a standard-setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. The Organization also serves as a clearinghouse for the dissemination and sharing of information and knowledge while helping Member States to build their human and institutional capacities in diverse fields. In short, UNESCO promotes international co-operation among its 193 Member States and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. UNESCO is working to create the conditions for genuine dialogue based upon respect for shared values and the dignity of each civilization and culture. MALAYSIA IN BRIEF
Location
Malaysia is located just north of the equator and in the south-eastern Asia, the peninsular bordering Thailand in the north while to the south is Singapore and Indonesia. The east of Malaysia (the states of Sabah and Sarawak) is in the northern one-third of the island of Borneo, bordering Indonesia, Brunei and the South China Sea. Malaysia has a tropical, humid climate with temperatures averaging from 2131 degree Celsius. It is generally warm, wet and humid throughout the year though it is cooler in the highland areas. The major change in seasons is marked by the arrival of the monsoons that bring heavy downpours to the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the north-eastern part of Sabah and the western end of Sarawak (from November to February). Malaysias population is around 25 million. It is a multi-ethnic nation comprising three major races, namely the Malays, Chinese and Indians. There are also smaller groups in the community such as the Sikhs, Eurasians and the indigenous groups like the Ibans, Bidayuhs, Kadazans and Muruts who are mostly residing in Sabah and Sarawak. Bahasa Melayu is the national language, but English is widely spoken and is the language of business. Cantonese, Hokkien and Hakka are spoken by the Chinese population and Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi among the Indian population. Malaysia is 8 hours ahead of GMT and 16 hours ahead of U.S Specific Standard Times. Participants are advised to dress in formal/smart casual. For comfort, participants may use clothing made of cotton. For official occasion, suit, jacket and tie or national costume are the norms. Ladies should be appropriately dressed in office attire. The local currency is in Ringgit Malaysia (RM). Currency notes are in denominations of RM1, RM5, RM10, RM50 and RM100. Credit cards are accepted in most parts of Malaysia. Traveller's cheques may be changed at commercial banks, hotels and authorised money changers. Persons seeking to enter Malaysia must be in possession of valid passports or other internationally recognized travel documents that must be valid for at least six months beyond the period of stay allowed in Malaysia.
