SUBMITTED BY: Raman Kumar Garg 08BCE251

1. Introduction:
ENGLISH IS IMPORTANT IN BOTH OUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIVES Modern English, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant language or in some instances evens the required international language of communications, science, information technology, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. Its spread beyond the British Isle began with the growth of the British Empire, and by the late 19th century its reach was truly global. A working knowledge of English has become a requirement in a number of fields, occupations and profession such as medicine and computing as a consequence over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level. It is one of six official languages of the United Nations. English had been established in Malaysia since the colonial era and affecting our personal lives and careers until today. Communication with others, when meeting with friends who cant speak in the native language the English language will be used. Skills in English language also allows us to have high self-esteem, enhance the image and provide encouragement to develop themselves further in English when you are among friends who speak in this language. While traveling abroad for leisure allows us to communicate with others for example if we are to European countries. Most of the European people speaking in English. If we are not fluent in English how to communicate with them. Language skills in English also allow us to influence others and open their minds to the country and our culture. Everybody loves their hobbys for example cooking, fishing, camping, reading or collecting. Hobby requires knowledge of English for example reading books or a good reference materials comes from overseas authors. All the books written in English, it is impossible for those who do not know English to read books. As we all know, English is the one of important language in this world. If we cannot speak English even a little bit, we are called as a very poor in this community. We also cannot improve our life if we worst in English. We will feel loser if we in the group that use English as a medium to speak. According to the research that have been made by the group of University Malay, 70% of undergraduate student especially Malay student are not use English as a medium to speak. Its show that most of the students do not want to use

English as a main language in their life. People always said that we must use our country language so that it indicates we love our country. The statement is not fault but we also must learn English for our future life such as to find a job, to communicate with foreigner, easy to understand if we find information through online and easy for student to survive in university life because most of the university in Malaysia use English as a medium to speak. One of the reason why we must learn English in our daily life is English is important to get a job. In this era, many people are jobless eventhough they have a degree. It is because they do not have a soft skill. Eventhough we got the best result in examination but we cannot speak in English, it is hard for us to find a job. Example is, if we want to work with a giant company such as Petronas, Sime Darby, Schlumberger and etc we need to face many process. One of the processes is interview. Interview is one of the important processes for us to face if we want to work with a giant company. Many giant companies have a francais at the other country. So, they use international language that is English as a medium to communicate among the others. Therefore, they must do an interview in English to find an employee. If we have a soft skill like can speak fluently in English, the company will not hesitate to take us as one of their employee.... English is currently the most wide spread language in the world, it is second only to Mandarin Chinese in terms of the amount of people which speak it, but second to none in terms of the number of people learning it. It is currently the primary language used on the World Wide Web, in the political and business arenas. It has even become the language of today's pop culture. So yes, I definitely think that learning English is important. While English may not have as large a quantity of speakers as Mandarin it is still more widespread and herein lays its importance. Mandarin Chinese is hardly spoken outside Chinese communities, however in many regions of the world where English is not the native language, it is still widely spoken and integrated in the curriculums of educational institutions. In many countries Malaysia, for example, where there various ethnic groups with their own unique language, English is used as a means of communications between all of them. So we see that the importance of English doesn't lie in the quantity of people that speak it but in way we use it.

Today the USA's influence on world information is dominant, English, being their native tongue, the same is true for Britain. The music and other types of media that come out of these two countries are broadcast around the world. Most of the world's largest pop stars record English albums, which are played and requested in all the corners of the earth. Imagine feeling baffled and confused when you hear a song on the radio, you don't know what is being said because you didn't bother to learn English and all around you the rest of the world is singing along. With the world steadily heading towards economic globalization it is essential that English is taught and understood around the world so that the common man can keep up with world issues.

2. Current trends in English for Professional and Academic Purposes

Specialised languages usually refer to the specific discourse used by Professionals and specialists to communicate and transfer information and knowledge. There are as many specialised languages as there are professions. This is what has usually been known as Languages for Specific Purposes or,when applied to English, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), i.e., the special discourse used in specific settings by people sharing common purposes. It is not our aim to define the term or to carry out a historical review of the topic, as many authors have already done so in the last 50 years). Neither do we want to get involved in the debate over whether English for Academic Purposes (EAP) should be considered a subfield of ESP or if they are now two different areas of teaching and research within Applied Linguistics. That is the reason why we are continuing with the term English for Professional and Academic Purposes (EPAP). The term EPAP is much clearer and more specific to cover the domain we are dealing with here. The relevance of English in academic and professional settings began some decades ago, in the 1960s, and it has not decreased. Orr (2002: 1) said that ESP is an exciting movement in English language education that is opening up rich opportunities for English teachers and researchers in new professional domains. The spread of science and technology all over the world, together with the globalisation of the economy and the fact that the university world is becoming more international, has all helped to make the English language the current lingua franca of international

communication. Despite the research carried out so far in the field, we still believe that much more ought to be conducted. If systematic attention to actual needs continues to be its hallmark, ESP will clearly advance further in its study of specialized English discourse and in its development of effective methodologies to teach it. EAP refers mainly to the academic needs of students and of future professionals who would seek a career in the academic environment and English for Professional Purposes (EPP) refers to the actual needs of (future) professionals at work. As this distinction is currently widely accepted by many scholars, it is also true that those two broad fields or categories also involve many different areas and fields of interest and research. EPAP can cover hundreds of research topics as well as put them into practice in hundreds of academic and professional settings.
