Resume Tips
I recently had a conversation with a true advocate for the unemployed, our topic turned to resumes and what constitutes a good resume from a bad resume. My first thought was that a good resume is one that lands the candidate an interview while a bad resume doesnt. You would be surprised at the amount of people that I visit with that tell me they have applied to possibly 100s of positions with their resume and they gotten no response. My response is simple; rewrite your resume, its obviously not working. My quest, with this entry, is to walk through a guideline of what to do and not to do with your resume. I sent out a simple question, to about 40 different hiring managers, Human Resource Manager, and other department managers that I know are involved in the hiring process and asked what it is that grabs their eye when they are looking for a candidate? While the response to that question was as broad as the subject itself, I was able to come up with some consensus as to what attracts attention from these managers. Contact Information Make sure you have your name and a good contact number that is clearly stated on your resume. On a side not, if you are leaving a good contact number, please make sure that there is a professional message on your voicemail, you dont want an unprofessional voicemail being the first impression a potential hiring manager gets when they are trying to reach you to line up an interview. Email Address - Let me sum this point up with two good examples. Would you rather see icankillakeg@beerlover.com or does john.doe@gmail.com read a little better on the resume? What are key words? Key words are the reason why so many resume help websites, recruiters and hiring managers tell you that you should tailor your resume to each position. Resume databases searches are something that; Recruiters, H.R. Managers and other hiring managers sometimes use in order to scan their internal system to find resume and potential candidates for a position. This database allows the person using it, to select certain words or a phrase that tells the computer to pull all the resumes with those words or phrases in them for the manager to review. One tip: Where do the hiring managers get the keywords? Usually from the job posting, since theyve usually helped with writing the description. Spelling and Grammar Mistakes Proffreading is something that needs to be done before eash resume submission. Can you see why? An & And remember that when you mean to say and, that it is and, leaving the d off is still a correctly spelled word, however its not used in the correct form. Objective/Goal Statements, Yes or No? - Most all of the hiring managers told me NO they would rather see that space devoted to a stronger understanding of the candidates previous position or skill set. Professional Photo - The only issue that received a resounding NO was a picture on your resume. Not only is it a distraction, there are legal implications because of individual status, gender, and race. Anything that will provide protected or individual status is a big no. Hobbies/Family/Past Times - No. Never disclose your marital status, how many children, or grandchildren, you have or what you do in your spare time. Also, no birthdates, wedding anniversary dates, or years you graduated high school or college. Fonts/Scripts - Keep it simple, 10-12 point font size, no scripts even if you think they are pretty they do not set you apart, and the wrong ones can be rather annoying to try and decipher. Professional Certifications By all means, make sure that the professional certifications that you hold are spelled out. Do NOT make the hiring manager guess as to what your certification is, or more importantly how in pertains to the position you are applying for with their company. Do I include my volunteer work, if I am unemployed? Yes! This shows the hiring manager that you are still actively involved in the community and you are at least trying to build a network that could prove useful in your new role.
Is there a correct way to use dates for your previous positions? - No hard and fast rule on this one, however one thing
I always tell people is never just use from year to year, i.e. 2007 to 2010. Make sure to include a month along with the year. Should you have a job within the same year (2010-2010) it is acceptable to include a short sentence as to why you left the position. Chronological vs. Functional Resumes? - This question elicited a very mixed response. I found that the responses that said chronological were mostly for positions that Ive known not to be technical in nature. What do I mean? I see that I.T/Engineering and other Science based positions, those hiring managers like to see functional, compared to accounting, administrative, and other more non-science based positions were drawn to the Chronological. Summation if it is science related functional is fine, but for most of the people reading this, chronological. I have too much experience for just one page. The short response to that statement is, No you dont. The Human Resource Managers I spoke with all said the same thing stick to a one page resume. 10-15 years of work experience is plenty, and we are all hoping that is just one page for you. What about my responsibilities- A lot can be said about the verbs that you use in your resume. For the most part, some of the words/phrases to stay away from are: Responsible for Good Communicator Experienced Can work on a deadline Team Player. Dont just use these words, show where these skills were applicable in your previous positions. References upon request - References will be requested, and hopefully those references that youve already reached out too and let them know they maybe getting a call from this company. There is not use to have this statement on your resume.

Smart
Resumes
Introduce yourself. How do you turn your life story into a quick read? Visit a library or book store and spend an hour getting familiar with current resume formats. You will see that current styles emphasize skills and accomplishment rather than long job descriptions. Most resumes start with a summary of qualifications at the top. With this introduction, you summarize your experience and highlight the skills you want to showcase. Too often, job seekers bury critical information at the end. If you have 7 years experience in your field, a college degree and speak Spanish - those all go in your introduction. Capture the readers interest right away by stating your strengths in the first few lines.
