Taxi driver mummified like Tutankhamun

SOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV

Last year Alan Billis was a taxi driver in Torquay, now hes become the first person in 3,000 years to be mummified like Tutankhamum -- all in the name of a TV show. Before his death from lung cancer in January, Alan had signed on to be part of a bizarre experiment in mummification, to be filmed for Channel 4. In a bid to better understand how the ancient Egyptians were able to preserve pharaohs perfectly for millennia the 61-year-olds corpse was put through a variety of special techniques. Scientists now think -- thanks to Alan -- theyve been able to crack the mystery of mummification and say their finding turn much accepted wisdom about the process its bandaged head. Dr Stephen Buckley, a chemist and research fellow at York University, has spent 19 years trying to discover exactly how the ancient Egyptians preserved bodies. Ive come up with fantastic new insights that tell us a very great deal, says Stephen Buckley. What I was able to do was to look at things in quite a different way, and in doing so get information that perhaps people had missed. Its turned current understanding, including my own, completely on its head. Alan Billis, a taxi driver from Torquay in Devon who died in January 2011 at the age of 61, has become the first person for three millen

nia to be mummified like Tutankhamun, the pharaoh who died in 1323BC aged around eighteen and whose magnificent tomb was discovered in 1922. Diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, Alan read a news story about the Channel 4 mummification project and decided to donate his body to the experiment after his death. His decision has the full support of his family and he appears in the documentary

alongside his wife, Jan.

He just said, Ive just phoned someone up about being mummified, said Jan. I said, youve what? Yes, Ive phoned up someone about being mummified. And I thought here we go again. Whats going to go on now? Its just the sort of thing you would expect him to do...

The worlds largest edible Taj Mahal sculpture

US actress sues IMDb for publishing real age

SOURCE: WEIRDASIANEWS.COM

A food artist had set a new world record for building the worlds largest edible Taj Mahal sculpture using curry ingredients from pilau rice and poppadoms to Bombay potatoes. Prudence Staite spent more than 5 days creating the 3ft X 10ft X 5ft poppadom palace -- complete with the iconic white domes of the Taj Mahal made from Chipati bread. Commissioned by Food Network UK to celebrate the launch of its new series Reza, Spice Prince of India the edible Taj Mahal sculpture, pilau rice creates the main structure of the Taj. Poppadoms make up part of the garden with green chillies placed as trees and mango chutney adding more garden decoration Mmm yummy garden decoration. Nick Thorogood, of Food Network EMEA says: Our new show Reza, Spice Prince of India sees Reza exploring the magnificent palaces of Rajasthan, learning about the history and sampling local cuisine - so its only fitting that we created the most famous Indian palace out of food, giving people a unique taste of India here in the UK! Reza Mahammad, TV chef and host of the show comments: Whilst filming the show in Rajasthan, we visited the most extraordinary royal palaces, all which took years to complete, so it was incredible to watch this beautiful, edible Taj Mahal being constructed with such detail, and even better to taste it! Reza, Spice Prince of India premieres on Food Network UK on Monday, 24th October at 6.30pm. A US actress is seeking $1m damages from Internet Movie Database because the website revealed her real age. The unnamed Texan says that she never gave IMDb permission to publish her real age and their doing so has cost her work. Its claimed the woman looks too young to play roles of her own age and since beginning working in Hollywood in 2003 had been cast as much younger. However since IMDb published her real age, the actress says she has repeatedly lost out on a number of roles and blames this on the publication. She now hopes to receive $1m or more in punitive damages and $75,000 or more in compensatory damages if having your age on the internet is worth that sort of money, Im 31! If one is perceived to be over the hill, ie approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as the plaintiff, to get work as she is thought to have less of an upside, the actors complaint reads. [The] plaintiff has experienced rejection in the industry for each 40-year-old role for which she has interviewed because she does not and cannot physically portray the role of a 40-year-old woman.

Strip-search calls at World Scrabble Championship

SOURCE: NEWSLITE.TV

There were calls for a contestant at the World Scrabble Championship in Warsaw to be strip-searched -- after one of the tiles went missing. British letters man Ed Martin had been accused of hiding an all important letter G during a match with a Thai player. This is said to haveprompted his opponent to call for Martin to be taken toilet so he could be search. However, authorities refused and as no evidence was presented to support the Thai players allegation, Martin was declared the winner. New Zealander Nigel Richards took the overall title after scoring 95 points with the word omnified, scooping a 12,700 prize. 3 BuGils Bi-Weekly - Issue #44 - November 02, 2011

Half in U.S. support legalizing marijuana use, poll finds

SOURCE: NEWSLITE.

(Reuters) - An artist arrested for applying body paint to a nude model in New Yorks Times Square will have charges against him dropped if his models strip naked only after dark, according to a court agreement reached on Thursday. Police arrested Andy Golub, 45, in July and charged him with violating public exposure and lewdness laws. He has been painting nude models for about three years. Golubs lawyer, Ronald Kuby, argued that New York laws do not prohibit public nudity in the name of art, and a compromise was reached that was the basis of the court ruling. Under the agreement, he is permitted to paint bare breasts any time, anywhere, but the G-strings have to stay on until daylight goes out, Kuby said after a hearing in Manhattan criminal court. State laws against public exposure exempt any person entertaining or performing in a play, exhibition, show or entertainment, Kuby said. Municipalities are allowed to devise their own restrictions, but New York City generally does not do so, Kuby said. Golub, of Nyack, New York, said he likes to paint nude models because their bodies have energy and dynamism that he finds lacking in canvas. I feel that when I do live body painting its a good thing, a positive thing, he said. Charges against Golub will be dropped in six months if he abides by the terms of the agreement and is not arrested again. Charges against Karla Storie, a model from Texas arrested with him, will be dismissed if she too is not arrested again in the next six months. Golub said he was planning to return to criminal court on Friday and paint a nude model in a park near the courthouse.

(Reuters) - Half of Americans now support legalizing marijuana use, a record level, amid growing support for decriminalization that could build pressure to eventually change U.S. laws on the drug, a Gallup poll showed on Monday. The poll showed that support was highest among liberals and adults under age 30, with more than 60 percent of respondents in those categories favoring legalization. Support was lowest, at just 31 percent, among Americans over age 65. Support for legalizing marijuana has been increasing over the past several years, rising to 50 percent today, the highest on record, a summary of the poll said. Another 46 percent said marijuana should remain illegal. If this current trend on legalizing marijuana continues, pressure may build to bring the nations laws into compliance with the peoples wishes, the summary added. Gallup said support for legalization had crept up from just 12 percent in 1969 to 30 percent in 2000 and 40 percent in 2009. Last year, a Gallup survey found 70 percent of Americans favored making it legal for doctors to prescribe marijuana to relieve pain and suffering. California in 1996 became the first state to decriminalize medical marijuana, and a number of other U.S. states have followed suit with their own statutes. Cannabis remains classified as an illegal narcotic under federal law. A separate national survey released last month showed that marijuana was increasingly becoming the drug of choice among young adults in the United States, with nearly 7 percent of Americans aged 12 and older having used marijuana in 2010. The Gallup poll released on Monday showed that Democrats, at 57 percent, were more likely to support legalization than Republicans, only 35 percent of whom favored such a move. Men, at 55 percent, were also more likely to back legalization than women, at 46 percent. By geography, more than half of Americans in the West, Midwest and East supported legalization while in the South, 44 percent favored such a move. The poll was based on telephone interviews conducted between October 6-9 with a random sample of 1,005 adults across the country. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Bank robbery foiled by crooks poor handwriting

SOURCE: reuters

A would-be bank robber was forced to flee empty-handed when staff were unable to read his note demanding they hand over cash. Thomas Love had apparently walked into a WSFS Bank in Delaware and handed over a poorly penned note, which the teller was unable to read. When she told him that she couldnt make out what wanted -- like the scene in Woody Allens Take the Money and Run -- 40-year-old Love stormed off. After realising hed been trying to rob the bank, staff contacted police and gave them his description. He was arrested shortly after. A Delaware State Police spokesman said: We get plenty of notes passed, but none where theyve been illegible. We had to call in the hieroglyphics expert! Even after careful examination of the note, which had been thrown into a nearby bin, officers said they could not fully understand it. 4 BuGils Bi-Weekly - Issue #44 - November 02, 2011

De Hooi
I came in to De Hooi this morning because we got a new AC installed in the ceiling downstairs and it was doing a bit of leaking from I guess the condensation coming off of the drain pipe. I instructed the AC tech just to wrap it in insulation and cross our fingers that that works. Would have thought he would have taken that into consideration when he installed it, him being an AC tech and all but I guess its not a good idea to assume such things. Now that a new AC has been installed upstairs, a big 5pk standing unit, I can finally say that at least one floor of De Hooi is adequately air conditioned. Hallelujah! Its actually even cooler than the downstairs now but Im working on getting downstairs cooler as well. You might think De Hooi is already a perfect temperature until youre here on a Friday, Saturday or any other busy night and then youll appreciate the extra dingin. Aside from the new AC, 4pk by the way, the other units downstairs are already over 4 years old and I think serviced half to death. Theyre in their death throes. Throes, another great word, wish I could use it more often. So Im campaigning to get them replaced. So Id already done my supervising and was about to leave when the sky turned black and let loose. Im on a scooter so have to wait till the rain stops. I was pretty hungry so decided to have my new menu special Fish Tacos. Hells yeah! Two corn tortillas topped with fried fish, fresh cabbage, guacamole, salsa and aioli sauce served with a wedge of lime. I always keep a good selection of hot sauce on hand so if thats what you like make sure you request it. We have bottled hot sauce from Mexico and a house hot sauce that pretty damn spicy. As you may know Ive been trying to cut back on my drink as Id like to lose some weight and get back in shape. I was just talking to some friends and regulars and they said I wasnt doing such a good job of that on Saturday but I was doing a good job of being entertaining. I wasnt quite sure what happened Saturday but I think towards the end of the night I was setting a good example for my customers. I had such a hangover the next day and couldnt remember most of what happened after a few shots of duck fart which always makes me expect the worst. Then driving in the gate this morning they gave me the slip that lets me know I didnt give them the slip Im supposed to give them as I leave. I always wonder how I get out the gate on those nights. And I thought oh hell. But its never as bad as I expected. Thank God. Always scared there will be stories of me doing something completely out of line. Thanks for making De Hooi Southern Jakartas favorite beer joint. Cheers,

Harry

Match Report
Jasper has lost his balls. Thats what he told me to write.not sure why but being a modest chap he didnt want any mention of the fact that he had just coached BuGils FC to a hat- trick of victories in the league. A rare achievement. Quite possibly unprecedented. Thats what Ray said, although being a former English teacher he preferred to use the alternative phrase aint never appened. Actually its possible that Lens was responsible for the first victory but Jasper was quick to point out that at that stage it could not be called a winning streak. He had a point. As Lens preferred to spend his Saturdays watching men play with odd shaped balls Jasper had taken over the coaching duties, a.k.a. calling the subs. Not an easy task with so many to choose from and its easy to get mixed up. At one point during a game Jasper was heard to shout encouragement to one of our defenders. Great tackle Serge. Unfortunately Serge was still on the sidelines awaiting his first foray onto the pitch. John (who, to be fair to Jasper, is also from Cameroon(!)) was the tackler. Its been a while and I cant remember what was covered the last time so a quick round up of the season to date. Losses to DoIt, The Wanderers and Nomads probably best forgotten followed by narrow wins against the Japanese, the Lions and Murphys. Incidents worthy of any mention seem to be few and far between this season; the Japanese refused to shake hands after the game (note to self practice bowing before return match); Chris, the Lions Scouse skipper, took quite vociferous exception to one incident and was asked to calm down fortunately those on the sidelines refrained from descending into mass Harry Enfield character impersonations, possibly because they, much like most of the readers who have made it this far, have no idea what Im talking about. Heres hoping for continued success on the field, and an end to the dry spell of noteworthy (funny?) happenings surrounding BuGils matches. If you need any proof of the lack of material, they say a picture paints a thousand wordsdo these tell a story??? g.g.

Mappe Monde a Pusage du Roy Par Guillaume Delisle Premier Geographe de S.M. (M0219)
A very attractive early to mid-18th century hand-coloured twin hemisphere map of the world by the great French cartographer Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726), one of the key figures in the development of French cartography who believed passionately in the importance of accuracy. During his lifetime his 100 or more maps were constantly updated to reflect widening knowledge of the world. This duohemispheric map was first produced by Delisle in 1724 in his Atlas Nouveau. This particular map is from a reissue of Delisles Atlas Nouveau in 1730 by the prolific Amsterdam map painters and publishers Covens and Mortier. Excellent condition. Measures 425 x 650mm.
