School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering

MSc Structural Engineering

12 months full time, September entry

Introduction
The University of Manchester and its predecessors have for many years provided internationally recognised masters programmes in Engineering. MSc in Structural Engineering was amongst the first of its kind established in Britain, and formed the basis for the present programme which is accredited by the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers. The core of the programme enables graduate students to develop a deeper understanding of structural theory and its applications in analysis and design. Optional modules cater for broader interests, still with a structures theme. A dissertation is completed that focuses on a Structural Engineering research topic of some complexity. This programme attracts students from a variety of backgrounds but generally have a first degree in Civil Engineering or in a closely related discipline. Some examples of past student backgrounds include: Students who, after completion of their first degree wish to specialise in Structural Engineering. Students who need to take an accredited one-year Masters programme in order to complete the educational requirements for becoming a Chartered Engineer. Industrial practitioners who wish to gain up-to-date knowledge and experience to aid their career development . Junior members of staff from non-UK universities who wish to enhance their qualifications and knowledge of the subject area, to aid their career development in their institutes. After completing the MSc in Structural Engineering, a significant number of postgraduates remain within the School for PhD studies, for which scholarships are available on a competitive basis.

Programme Content
The programme commences in mid-September and for the first two semesters students follow a taught component of five core units and two optional units delivered through lectures, tutorials and assignments. This part of the programme is assessed by examinations in January and in May/June. The remaining months, from May to September are spent on a research project and the submission of a dissertation, which must be made by the middle of September. Dissertation work commences at the start of the Second Semester in parallel with the taught modules and, subject to satisfactory examination performance, completed in full-time attendance. The research projects that are offered enable students to develop further their theoretical, experimental, design, and computational skills, depending on the nature of the project selected. They also provide an opportunity for in-depth study in a chosen subject area.
