Project 3 Running head: PROJECT 3 GSS SURVEY

Project 3 GSS Survey and Crosstabs Winston Wright Tuskegee University SOWK 300-02 October 29, 2011

Project 3 Hypothesis:

Peoples opinion towards the use of the death penalty for murder is affected by his or her education. The more that someone favors the use of the death penalty the lower their education tends to be. The higher the education of the respondents means the lower the chances for them to favor the use of the death penalty for people that commit murder. People that have graduate degrees 13% of them oppose the death penalty compared to 6.7% that do. The overall relationship between corporal punishment and education will be somewhat similar to the original bivariate relationship for both males and females. However the women will most likely lean more towards opposing the use of corporal punishment. High education levels cause both males and females to oppose the use of corporal punishment but more so for women than men. A larger percent of women with graduate degrees oppose corporal punishment than men. The women percentage is at 13.1% while the men are at 12.9%.

Project 3 Rationale: From the information gathered a persons opinion towards corporal punishment is affected by their education level. The respondents with the higher education levels tend to go away from corporal punishment because they are more educated on it. The respondents that are

less educated know little about corporal punishment and they may feel that is the best way to get justice for the victims family. In every educational level except high school pretty much oppose the use of corporal punishment. People in high school favor corporal punishment more 54.7% of the favor corporal punishment. When the control variable is added to the bivariate hypothesis the results are pretty much the same. The control variable for these sets of variables is sex. With the two different sexes males and females the results of the respondents responses are almost identical. Males and females both feel the same way towards corporal punishment. The respondents with the higher educational levels oppose it and the lower educated people favor it more. Both the males and females with graduate degrees oppose corporal punishment males with 12.9% and females with 13.1%. So with the addition of the control variable it didnt really make a big difference because the results were the same the higher educated opposed corporal punishment more than the lower educated.

Project 3 Discussion: The results of this survey show that once people became more educated they began to fade away from corporal punishment. However there are some exceptions people that had lower

than a high school education also opposed corporal punishment. 13.9% of them favored corporal punishment while 17.8% of them opposed it. But when it gets to respondents with high school education they favor the idea of corporal punishment more with 54.7% and 44.9% oppose the thought of corporal punishment. The results of the survey also show the breakdown of the same results pertaining to males and females. The results of the survey shown in this format lets you know where each sex stands on the topic. The results show that the males and females pretty much share the same thoughts on corporal punishment. Females with a junior college level of education is at 8% that favor it and 7.7% oppose it. While the males of that same level of education have 9.2% that favor it and 6.1 % that oppose it. All in all this survey provides us with information that lets us know that people with a high level of education tend to oppose the idea of the death penalty being used as a means of discipline for murder. The people with the lower level of education is more than likely less educated on that subject than those who have a higher degree of education.
