Modifications to Industry Standard (IEEE 841) The following clause numbers refer to IEEE 841 - 1994, which is part of this Specification. The text in each clause below is an addition to IEEE 841 unless it is noted as an exception. Clause numbers not appearing in IEEE 841 are new clauses to be inserted in numerical order. Clause number appearing in IEEE 841 that are not modified are not repeated in this specification. 1 1.1 1.1.1 Overview Scope (Exception) This specification shall only be used for motors rated 480 V and below and up to and including 185 kW (250 HP). Motors specified for fin fan service shall also meet the motor requirements of API STD 661 which are more stringent than this specification. 1.3 Explosion Proof Motors Where explosion proof construction is specified or required because of the area classification, the motor shall meet the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listing requirements of UL 674. Motors for use in Class I or II, Division 1, hazardous locations as defined by ANSI/NFPA 70 shall bear the UL listing mark. Explosion proof motors do not have to conform to the requirements of IEEE 841.
Exception: Motors certified by agencies other than UL are acceptable with the concurrence of the Coordinator, Electrical Systems Division, Consulting Services Department.

1.4

Motors for Class 1, Division/Zone 2 Locations Motors specified for Class 1, Division 2/Zone 2 hazardous locations shall meet NEC requirements for this application. NEC requirements permit squirrel-cage induction motors that do not contain unprotected arc producing devices. Unless the space heaters are approved for Class 1, Division2 /Zone 2 locations, the temperature exposed surfaces of space heaters (based upon a 50C ambient) shall not exceed 80% of the ignition temperature in C of the gas or vapor involved when operated at the specified voltage.

1.6

Inspection Requirements Refer to Saudi Aramco Inspection Requirement Form 175-170200, for inspection requirements.

2 3 3.2

References Service Conditions Unusual Service Conditions a) Unless otherwise specified, motors conforming to this specification shall be suitable for operation in accordance with their rating while exposed to ambient temperatures in the range of 0C to 50C.

4 4.1

Ratings Basis of Rating Motors shall be applied within their rating based on a 1.0 SF (service factor) in a maximum 50C ambient temperature.

4.3

Voltage and Frequency Ratings (Exception) Motors supplied under this specification shall be rated 480 V or below.

4.5

Enclosures Motors shall be fitted with replaceable shaft seals of the non-contacting while rotating type. Seals shall be fitted on both the drive end and non-drive end of the shaft.

5 5.2

Electrical Performance Motor Designs and Starting Characteristics a) When specified or required because of the load characteristics of the driven equipment, NEMA Design C motors may be supplied. NEMA Design E shall not be supplied without the concurrence of Coordinator, Electrical Systems Division, Consulting Services Department.

5.4

Insulation System and Temperature Rise b) (Exception) When operated at rated (nameplate), voltage frequency, and horsepower, the temperature rise of any phase of the stator

winding shall not exceed 70C above a 50C ambient. This corresponds to a maximum total motor temperature of 120C.
Commentary Note 5.4 b): This meets NEMA MG-1 requirements for adjusting Class B temperature rise to a 50C ambient. The Class F insulation system is required to operate with the cooler Class B temperature rise.

6 6.1

Mechanical Features Bearings and Lubrication c) Conrad deep-groove or spherical roller thrust bearings are required for vertical flange-mounted motors with thrust loading. Thrust bearings of other constructions shall not be supplied. Where the motor shaft is solidly coupled to the driven apparatus, the thrust capacity of the thrust bearing shall be sufficient to carry the weight of the rotating element of the motor and the external axial thrust loads (in either or both directions), as well as the radial load specified. For vertical motors which are designed for external thrust loads, the thrust bearings shall also be rated for an AFBMA L-10 minimum life of 5000 hours continuous service at 200% of the maximum (during operation at rated capacity, stopping, or starting) specified up and down thrust.

d)

6.6

Drains If an explosion proof motor is provided with a drain it shall be an explosion proof drain fitting with a UL listing mark.

9 9.3

Tests Additional Tests Current input shall be measured at rated frequency with the rotor at standstill. This may be taken single-phase or three-phase at rated or reduced voltage.

10 10.1

Nameplates Nameplate Marking Nameplate marking shall include the specified 1.0 SF and 50C maximum ambient temperature.

17-SAMSS-503 Severe-Duty, Totally Enclosed, Squirrel Cage Induction Motors to 250 HP

Motors marked for continuous operation at 1.15 SF in a 40C ambient are accepted as equivalent provided that they meet all the requirements of this specification, including requirements for satisfactory operation at 1.0 SF in a 50C ambient with a maximum 70C winding temperature rise (120C total winding temperature). Commentary Note 10.1: This specification requires motors to be designed for operation in a 50C ambient at 1.0 SF. When operated in a 50C ambient, all components of motors nameplated for operation at 1.15 SF in a 40C ambient but operated at 1.0 SF must provide equivalent durability, reliability, and life expectancy to motors designed for operation at 1.0 SF in a 50C ambient.

11 11.1 11.2

Space Heaters Motors rated 75 kW (100 HP) and above shall be equipped with space heaters. Motors less than 75 kW (100 HP) shall be equipped with space heaters if specified in Data Schedule 1.
