PaaS / NaaS

Curriculum Day Sequence Cloud Computing Day 1 Day 1 part 3 following IaaS Slides loc: Timing [file path of slide stack] 1 hour

Definitions: Objectives/practical applications: Introduce PaaS and NaaS and describe the architecture, billing and business models associated with securing platform and network as a service. Summary paragraph If your company already offers infrastructure as a service, it makes sense to offer platform as a service as well. Some kind of platform will be required to access the infrastructure, so PaaS is a central part of the Cloud Computing Framework. Most mobile network operators provide IaaS and PaaS which will now be known as Network as a Service (NaaS). NaaS is a combinational service of platform offerings (PaaS) and infrastructure offerings (IaaS). With the NaaS model, operators treat their key network assets communications, information, and intelligence as marketable resources that can be offered to third parties on a commercial basis. This now falls closely with VNOs where 3rd parties now have access to use your network to satisfy their needs. PaaS and NaaS contend complex billing models that carry with it potential risks to revenue. It is important to look at the architecture and determine

Terms A list of buzzwords, what you must understand or what you will learn in the module Prerequisite terms Terms students must understand before taking this module VoIP Voice Over IP In a NaaS instance, the customer requires your network to develop a PBX, where licenses are given for X number of telephone numbers, and billing is done accordingly. SIP A signaling protocol, widely used for setting up and tearing down multimedia communication sessions such as voice and video calls over the Internet Requisite terms Terms students will be taught in this module Private cloud For an enterprise like a company or business, a private cloud is an internal network, system or application designed specifically for that company. Public Cloud A public cloud for PaaS is any when customers can use the platform to create their own applications. This leaves the door wide-open for third party developers to create revenue-generating services over a public platform.

Processes These are the major processes described by the module and any sub-processed that spawn off of the main process. System Processes Describe the operations themselves. What the system does AAA Depending on your cloud, its possible that customers will develop applications using your platform. What are the conditions that allow them to do this? What AAA steps need to happen for them to implement their own applications? What are the possible applications with your platform? What are customers legally allowed to do? What are the IXP? What are the agreements with the ISP? For internal clouds how is change management handled? How is the platform accessed? Can changes to the platform be made? Channel Exchange Analysis Where are the security risks? How many customers can the network handle? Is it possible to create an application on the platform and use it outside of the platform? If its a third party offering fee-based applications on your platform, how is money transferred? What is the settlement process?

Margin/Market

What is the CAPEX/OPEX associated with PaaS? How is the cost determined? What plans are offered? When is revenue recognized? How is your product marketed? How is forecast determined? When a customer ends service how is the platform removed? What about applications created? How is a SLA terminated? If a customer offers a service using your platform how is that tracked? People Processes What the people are doing to run the system

Especially for a private cloud, is IT capable of updating and monitoring the systems? Developing platforms When a new product is available using your platform, are changes made automatically or based on demand. Do you know who is on your network and what they are offering? RA Processes What does RA do in terms of compliance on the controls

Controls the list of standard controls what is the control, why is the control, how do you do it, and systems and processes associated w/ the controls (if applicable). Access Architecture Prove that all network elements are secure Service Delivery Billing Architecture Partner Management Prove that usage can be tracked, and that all data records go to the billing system Prove that monthly and daily billing cycles are run effectively Prove which elements are under your control and which ones are not. Prove that all SLA are monitored and followed with accuracy and generate positive margins? Prove that change management procedures are being followed appropriately Prove that ISP agreement is valid and generates a positive margin? Stories and illustrations. Anecdotes that work as examples to provide clarification, origins of how controls were developed. Consider three of the most successful companies of the decade, Facebook, Google and Apple, as platforms and the keyword is application. Each company has developed a world of applications available on their platform.

Consider the value of a cloud service: For example, the price of an eBook is often the same as a real book, but the costs of the two are different. A person is willing to pay more to have their book available on a device.
