Reduce
 We reduce the amount of energy
usage in the office by setting the
thermostats to 78-80 degrees in the
summer and 65-68 degrees in the
winter.
 We have installed occupancy sensors
in some of our offices. These sensors
turn lights off when they have not
detected movement for a set period
of time.
 We replaced all incandescent bulbs
with high efficiency Energy Star-rated
compact fluorescent bulbs.
Reuse
Demolished construction materials
were either reused or donated to
Habitat for Humanity. They include:
 Furniture
 Light fixtures
 Wall studs
 Cabinetry
 Ceiling tiles
 Kitchen sink
Recycle
 We have facilitated recycling
collection for paper, plastics and
aluminum cans by creating a space
for collecting these items in the
stairwell landing. Each workstation
also has a recycle bin.
 We participate in the City's Civic
Recycling Program.
 Used print cartridges are returned to
the manufacturer to be reused or
recycled.

What Makes a Building Green?
A green building, also known as a
sustainable building, is a structure that is
designed, built, renovated, operated, or
reused in an ecological and resource-
efficient manner. Green buildings are
designed to meet certain objectives such
as protecting occupant health; improving
employee productivity; using energy, water,
and other resources more efficiently; and
reducing the overall impact to the
environment.
LIGHT FIXTURES:
High efficiency T-8 lighting fixtures that
replaced T-12 fluorescent lighting fixtures
provide indirect light without causing glare.
We selected 40-watt halogen lights for the
hallway.
CEILING TILES
Selected ceiling tiles are made from a rapidly-
renewable resource and have a high
recycled content.
CARPET:
 Carpet fibers are over 60% recycled
material.
 Carpet backing is made of 100%
post-consumer recycled material and
recyclable materials.
 Low VOC adhesives were used during carpet
installation.
 Walk-off carpet in entry reduces the amount
of contaminants introduced to the office
environment.
TEXTILES:
Eco-tex sustainable textiles are woven from
100% post consumer recycled pop bottles,
recyclable polyester.
CORIAN® COUNTERTOP:
 Corian® lasts a long time and can easily be
repaired and renewed.
 Because it doesn't react readily with other
chemicals or elements it has a low impact on
both indoor and outdoor environments,
including ground, vegetation and water
resources.
 The non-porous nature of Corian® means it
will not support the growth of mold, mildew or
bacteria.
 At room temperature, Corian® is non-toxic,
with virtually no "off-gassing" of volatile
organic compounds.
CHAIRS:
Think® by Steelcase are comfortable,
ergonomic and:
 Are up to 99% recyclable
by weight.
 Contain Up to 44%
recycled materials.
 Contain absolutely no
PVCs, CFCs, solvents,
benzene, chrome, lead
or mercury.
 Have a powder-coat painting
that is VOC-free and free of
heavy metals.
 No gluing processes are used in
the assembly process.
 Are easily disassembled for recycling.
PAINT:
We used zero-VOC (Volatile Organic
Compounds) paints throughout the office
to cut down on the release of toxic
emissions. These paints are durable,
cost-effective and less harmful to human
and environmental health.
CORK FLOORING:
 Is made from a rapidly renewable
resource that matures every 10 years.
 Is harvested with minimal impact on the
environment.
 Comes in a variety of colors for optimum
design flexibility.
 Is durable, water, insect and fire resistant
 Absorbs sound.
APPLIANCES:
We used Energy Star-rated Appliances
in the renovation in order to minimize
electric loads.
