Assessed Exercise 1
(This assignment constitutes 40% of the total module mark)
A thin plate containing a central circular hole as shown below is made of an elastic and perfectly plastic material with Youngs modulus E=200 GN / m 2 , Poissons ratio 0.3 and yield strength s 100MPa . D=0.4m, L=2m, and W=1.2m. The thickness of the plate is 0.01m. 1. Using FEMLab to find the applied remote stress that leads to the onset of plastic deformation anywhere in the plate. (20 marks for correct solution) Show (a) Your finite element model with mesh and boundary conditions (10 marks) (b) The location where the onset of plastic deformation occurs; (10 marks) (c) The distribution of von Mises stress in the plate at this applied stress; (10 marks) (d) Discuss the relevance of this analysis to engineering design (10 marks) Using FEMLab find the maximum possible stress that the plate can carry before full plastic collapse. (20 marks for correct solution) Show (a) The distribution of von Mises stress in the plate immediately before this applied stress is reached. (10 marks) (b) Discuss the relevance of this analysis to engineering design (10 marks)

Issued by Prof Jingzhe Pan, Oct 2011 In FEMLAB 3.0, the problem is defined using following steps: Analysis Type Click FEMLAB on all programs from Start Ensure New page is shown. Ensure Space Dimension is set to 2D. Click once on +Structural Mechanics Module Click once on +Plane stress Click on Static Analysis Select OK.

Geometry Select Rectangle/Square button from the left hand vertical toolbar Click on (-1,-0.6) drag cursor to (1, 0.6) then release. Select on Ellipse/Circle (Centered). Using the right mouse button, click on (0, 0) and drag the cursor to (0.2, 0) then click again. Press CTRL-A to select all objects Click on the Difference button on the left hand toolbar

Constraints Select Physics->Point Settings. Ensure Constraint page is shown. Click on 1. The bottom left point this corresponds to should be highlighted in red. Click on Rx and Ry, tick boxes to fix this point in the x and y directions. Select OK. Select Physics->Boundary Settings.

Ensure Constraint page is shown Click on 1, the left hand side boundary should be highlighted in red. Click on the Rx tick box to fix this boundary in the x-direction, note that it is not fixed in y direction to allow a Poisson contraction in this direction. Select OK.

Loads Select Physics->Boundary Settings. Click on Load tab to edit this page Click on 4 to highlight right hand boundary of the rectangle. Apply a load of 100MPa in the x-direction by entering 100e6 in Fx text box. Turn on the Edge load is defined as force/area using thickness radio button. Select OK.

Material Properties Select Physics->Subdomain Settings. Because there is only one subdomain in this case, click on 1 to edit its properties. Click on the Material tab. The default material properties are those for structural steel. Click OK to accept these.

Mesh Select Mesh->Initialize mesh Triangular meshed are automatically generated.

Solve Select Solve->Solve Problem.

Post-Processing After Solving the problem, FEMLAB automatically goes into post-processing mode. The von Mises stress is shown as default.

Analysis of the results Select Postprocessing->Plot Parameters Note from the check boxes that the current plot is a surface plot. Click on the Surface tab. Change the predefined quantities to x-displacement to show the displacement in the x-direction. Change the Colormap to grey. Select OK Click on a point within the object and the value of the displayed variable (x-displacement) at that point is shown in the bottom window.

Click on Draw Line For Cross-Section Line Plot from the left hand toolbar. Click on (-1, 0) and drag the cursor to (1, 0) then release the button.

This will plot a figure like above. Note that the displacements have no values where the hole is.

Select Postprocessing->Plot Parameters Click on the Surface tab. Change the predefined quantities to y-displacement to show the displacement in the y-direction. Select OK Click on a point within the object and the value of the displayed variable (y-displacement) at that point is shown in the bottom window.

Select Postprocessing->Plot Parameters

Ensure General page is shown Check the Deformed shape box under Plot Type Click Surface tab. Change the predefined quantities to von Mises stress. Select OK

Now the stress data are shown on the deformed shape.

Elasto-Plastic Material analysis

Select Physics->Subdomain Settings. Ensure in Subdomain Selection 1 has been highlighted Click Material tab and change Material mode to Elasto-plastic material. Click Elasto-plastic material data. Ensure the Elsto-plastic material setting page is shown Change the Hardening model to Perfectly plastic Click OK.

Select Solve-> Solve Problem Click on the Postprocessing mode Ensure General page is shown

Check the Max/min marker box under Plot Type Now the maximum and minimum values of von Mises stress are marked on the surface. In the perfectly plastic hardening model, the maximum value of von Mises stress should equals to the yield stress which is set as 2e8 in this example.

Select Physics->Subdomain Settings. Ensure in Subdomain Selection 1 has been highlighted Click Material tab and change Material mode to Elasto-plastic material. Click Elasto-plastic material data. Ensure the Elsto-plastic material setting page is shown Change the Hardening model to Isotropic Use the default values in this page. Click OK.

Select Solve-> Solve Problem Click on the Postprocessing mode Ensure General page is shown Check the Max/min marker box under Plot Type Now the maximum and minimum values of von Mises stress are marked on the surface. In the isotropic hardening mode, the maximum value of von Mises stress should be larger than the yield stress which is 2e8 and smaller than the maximum value obtained in the first case which is around 3e8.
