BAMBA/GANZE INTERGRATED WATER PROJECT Projected Outcomes

Excavation of 3 earth dams fitted with filtering systems will avail safer water for domestic use and reduce the water search time from 8 hours to an average of 1 hour. Hygiene education will be conducted in the 3 communities to emphasize the need for a clean and healthy environment. The catchment areas will be protected through reforestation and construction of 45 ECOSAN latrines. Establishment of 100 kitchen gardens will provide fresh vegetables for healthy eating in the targeted households and surplus can be sold for income generation to meet other household needs e.g. clothing, school fees and medical services. 1,200 people will be trained on environmental conservation, soil and water conservation, tree nursery establishment and management, hygiene and sanitation. 100 people will be trained on nutrition, kitchen garden establishment and management. 45 committee members will be trained on leadership skill, bookkeeping, earth dam management, participatory monitoring and evaluation.

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

1. Dam excavation

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the three dam sites i.e. Kafodzohini in Migumomiri, Kavilani in Tsanzuni and Hawe Yaa in Bandari to determine any negative environmental impacts of the dams and come with possible mitigation strategies. The sites were found to be suitable for the construction of the dams. Survey of the three dam sites to facilitate the design of the dams was successfully done. 12 supervisors (4 for each site) were trained on the basics of dam construction, supervision of the daily activities during the dam construction and how to keep records and prepare the payment vouchers. Excavation work on the dam sites is now complete. Communities were also assisted with excavation tools i.e. hoe, shovels, metal pans, and wheel barrows.

2. Environmental conservation Training on soil and water conservation in Tsanzuni, Bandari Migumomiri villages.159 communitiy members were trained on how to control soil erosion in their farmes and the surrounding environment. Topics covered during the trainings were; 1. Causes of soil erosion and environmental degradedation. 2. Methods of soil and environmental conservation conservation 3. How to use leveling boards and the A-frame to lay terraces in their farms Planting of indeginous and exotic trees to control the impacts of global warming was emphasized. So far 300 trees have been planted.

3. Construction of Ecosan latrines Communities in the three dam sites have been sensitized on the relationship between poor sanitation and water borne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid and dysentery. The communities realized the need to have proper disposal system for human waste. The process of making the toilets has began. They have now been trained on how to make them and are now in the process of constructing the toilets:

Kitchen gardening 193 farmers (80 in Migumomiri, 27 in Tsanzuni and 86 in Bandari) have been trained on how to establish and manage vegetable nurseries, kitchen garden establishment and vegetable growing. 107 farmers have already established kitchen gardens of 10m x 10m plots. The gardens are divided into four sections, composed of 14 zai holes, 3 fertility trenches, 3 ridges and a portion of deep tillage. The farmers intend to compare the produce from each section with an aim of adopting the method which will give more produce using less water. 80 farmers have started harvesting kales, brinjals and okra from their kitchen gardens.
