    An Improved Battlesight Zero for the M4 Carbine and M16A2 Rifle


    1. CurrentArmy/MarineCorpsbattlesightzeroandit'sproceduresarewelldescribedinTM9100531910,theM16/M4 operator'smanual. Thecurrent300meterbattlesightzeroisafunctionofthesightsontherifleandIpersonallyfinditshootstoohigh forthevastmajorityofcombattargets,includingtheArmy'squalificationranges.Theprocedurelistedheretakes betteradvantageoftheflattrajectoryoftheseriflesaswellastheuseofcivilianranges,whichareseldomsurveyed inmeters. Whenzeroedat200meters,adistancetwicethatofnormalcombatengagements,theserifleshaveaveryflat trajectorythatislessthen2"fromlineofsightatallintermediatedistances;adistancethat'ssmallerthanthenormal dispersionofarsenalorfactoryloadedammunition.Thistinytrajectoryarcallowsverypreciseshootingoutto250 meterswherethebulletisonly2"belowlineofsight. A200meterzerohasthehappycoincidenceofaninitialtrajectorycrossoverat50yards,adistanceavailableon almostallcivilianrangesincludingmanyindoorranges.Thismakesiteasytoachievea200meterbattlesightzero withoutrecoursetosurveyingyourownrange.If200metersisavailableyoucanfinetunethezeroatthereal distance.Andshouldwhenyougetthechance. Thelowestsightsetting,however,onthesesightsis300meterssothesightneedstobemodifiedtopreservethe markingsonthesight(despitethefactthatnooneeversetsarangeontheseintherealworldotherthanaUSMC range).Thesightneedstobesettobottomoutat8/32clicks.Thiswillbethenew200metersetting. a) b) Fliptherearsightbacktotheunmarkedaperture.Thiswillrevealaholeinthetopofthehandle. Battlesighttherifleperthe10withthefollowingexceptions: a) Sightshouldbeat8/32clicks,thatis,allthewaydown,notupaclick.Pleasenoteremovablehandle sightsaremarked6/3(ratherthan8/3);alsosomeareinhalfclicksaswell.Thereshouldbe3clicks between3and4ontheknob.Ifthereare6clicksthenthesightneedstobesetat4clicks(insteadof2). Smallaperture,nosetofiringhandleweld. Distanceis50yards. Pointofaimshouldbepointofimpactofbullet.

    Rememberyou'readjustingtheFRONTSIGHTforelevation,nottherear,andthateachclickisabout1/2"(actuallya littlemore)at50yards.Youwon'tgetitcloserthanthat.Don'tfrustrateyourselftrying. You'redone.Leavethesightinthispositionfor99%ofyourshooting. IfyouhavetoshoottargetsyouKNOWare300metersawayormore,justclicktotherightnumberonthesight.

    abovebutwithalarger,easiertoseethrurearsight.UsethissettingifyoualsohavetheM68mountedasit'squicker totransitiontoifthesightfails.

    [Editor's Note - there is some variance with the offset of the A2 aperture - they SHOULD be a 2 click difference - however some manufacturers produce them with larger offsets. Setting the sight to 3 then flipping to 0-2 might now work for your AR. Check it at the range, you want the group to be centered at 50y, you might need to set the sight at 3 +2 or even 4 to get the large aperture to be correct]
