Maintenance Technologist Entrance Exam Group A Candidates Users Guide

INTRODUCTION This document is intended to familiarize the candidates with the hiring process and the entrance exam for the position of maintenance technician at the CBC. This process requires that the candidates meet the qualification prerequisites identified in the job posting. A copy of the job spec is available from CBCs Human Resources department. In addition to these requirements the candidate must: Have a high school diploma plus two years of technical school or the equivalent experience as recognized by the CBC and Write and pass an entrance exam designed to confirm their technical knowledge as it relates to the job of a maintenance technician. They may also have to write and pass a practical exam if stipulated in the job posting. After having met these conditions and following a review of their resume, the candidate may be invited to participate in a job interview. The interview will also give an opportunity to the candidate to ask questions relating to the prospective position. THE ENTRANCE EXAM Part 1: Knowledge exam The entrance knowledge exam contains 50 multiple-choice questions that are closely tied to the published job specs. The required pass-mark is 60%. The exam duration is 3.5 hours. A typical exam might comprise exam questions distributed among the knowledge areas as follows: Application of Ohms law Circuit analysis Discrete components Circuit analysis Integrated circuits Power supplies Measurement techniques Digital logic circuits Computers 5 questions 10 questions 10 questions 5 questions 5 questions 5 questions 10 questions

Part 2: Specialty exam To gain some appreciation of a candidates work experience, 30 supplementary questions are included in the test. These deal with work specialties in 3 main areas: Audio Television Transmitters 10 questions 10 questions 10 questions

Total:

30 questions

Normally these specialty questions do not count towards the final mark. However, in instances where the candidate fails but gets more than 52% on the general knowledge exam then, at the discretion of the manager, the candidates score on their related specialty questions (Audio, TV or Transmitters) can be included. If the combined mark (general knowledge & specialty) is 60% or greater then the candidate will be given a pass. The exam will be conducted online at a CBC location. A computer and a scientific calculator will be provided at that time. The candidate will be allowed to bring one lettersized sheet of paper containing whatever notes and/or formulae he or she chooses. This paper will be submitted along with the completed exam. How can you prepare for the exam? To give some familiarity with the type of questions used, we have provided one sample question from each of the categories. These questions are found in the appendix. The answer to each of the questions can be found at the end of the appendix The candidate may wish to review some or all of the material that he/she can expect to find in the exam. Many reference books are available in libraries and book stores that cover the required material. The following references will provide a good starting point. Please note that newer editions may be available: 1- Introductory Circuit Analysis (12th Edition, 2010) By Robert L. Boylstad; Charles E. Merrill Publishing Division of Bell and Howell Company 2- Electronic Principles (6th Edition, 1998) By Albert Paul Malvino; McGraw Hill Book Company 3- Basic TV Technology: Digital and Analog (4th Edition, 2005) By Robert L.
