    AsIinformedyouafewweeksago,OccupyWallStreethasengagedmanymembersofthe universitycommunity.Iwouldliketoupdateyouonasituationthathasoccurredoverthe lastseveralhours. OnThursdayatabout5:00p.m.,agroupofprotesterslefttheStudentWeekofActionrally inUnionSquareheadeddownFifthAvenueforLowerManhattan.WhentheNYPDblocked FifthAvenueat14thStreet,agroupentered90FifthAvenue,aprivatelyownedbuildingon thecornerof14thStreetthathousesourStudentStudyCenter.Afterthecrowddispersed andthemajorityofprotesterscontinuedtheirmarchdowntown,thegroupat90Fifth remainedandpostedsignsonthewindowinsupportofOWS. TimMarshallandIenteredthebuildingtospeakwiththeprotesters.Whiletheywereclear thatthisisnotanactionagainstTheNewSchool,theyrefusedtogiveupthespace.Ina courteousexchange,wereachedanagreementthatTheNewSchoolwouldnothavethe protestersforciblyremovedatthistime.Inturntheyagreedthattheywouldnotdisrupt classes,interferewithothertenantsinthebuilding,orviolateitslegaloccupancylimit.

    t.I reiteratedmyexpectationsthattheymaketheirsandothers'safetyapriority,thatdamage toourpropertywouldnotbetolerated,andthatthereshouldbenodisruptionofother students'accesstoanyofoureducationalprograms(otherthanstudyingintheStudent StudyCenter).Thelinesofcommunicationbetweenusremainopen;sofarwehavebeen abletoresolvesatisfactorilytheissuesthathavecomeup. Irecognizethatthisisaconsiderableinconveniencetoourstudentsandotherswhowork inandusetheStudentStudyCenter;ourprimaryresponsibilityistoourstudentsand maintainingunimpededaccesstoeducation.Wehavearrangedtoextendaccesstothe FogelmanLibrarysecondfloorreadingroomtonightandtomorrownight.Beginningon Sunday,theendofsemesterschedulebeginswithmorebroadlyextendedhours. Whiletheuniversitytakesnopositioninthisoranymovement,TheNewSchoolsupports freeexpressionandtherighttoprotest.Communitiesaroundtheworldarerespondingin sympathytothosewhofeelthattheirvoicehasnotbeenheard.Whileitisnotwithoutcost, providingaspaceforthosevoicesispartofouruniquemission.
