(b) Discuss with the help of diagrams how the lift coefficient and drag coefficient of a conventional airfoil vary with respect to Mach number explaining the changes in flow behaviour. (a) Discuss different types of drag that are relevant to performance studies of an airplane. (b) Explain minimum drag speed and minimum power speed and their importance in aircraft performance analysis. Explain the equations of motion for steady, level flight. Discuss conditions for minimum drag and power in level flight with the help of diagrams. Explain super critical airfoil and area rule and discuss what they do for the drag rise in transonic flow. (a) What is endurance of an airplane? Derive expression to calculate endurance for propeller-driven airplanes and discuss the conditions for maximum endurance. (b) Derive range equation for propeller-driven airplanes.
