INTRODUCTION During my observation classes, at Domingos Ramos high school with EFL I observed many classes in which students

had a high level of participation. Not all of them participate as well as others because some of them are quiet and they do not answer questions unless they are asked to, even knowing the answer. Students always had a strong desire to participate during classes. The students who did not participate in class said that they have lack of vocabulary and that they were afraid to make mistakes. For the purpose of this paper I will write about group work, since it made wonder, why they still have a lack of vocabulary since they have been studying English for six years. Most of the students like English, but they need to learn how to structure better a complete sentence. Some of them said that they do not like group work, or they prefer to work all the time with their friends. During my observations I realized that when they were next to their best friends the classes were noisy, and the Teacher had to call their attention many times. Some students do believe that they are better able to generalize from active class activity than from what they write or listen to. In general students are therefore in need of active classroom involvement. We are able to say that students should work in group because part of their grade in any course will be based on it, also classes should be interactive, and they would be evaluated because of their participation. Tough, students learn best when they take an active part in the learning process. This topic is very important and interesting since students want different classes, dynamic classes in which they are all involved. In general Teacher gives them all the material related to the subject to be taught. By this I have decided to choose group work as my topic because it is important for the students and the Teacher also. To the Teachers it is important to have group work because it is an opportunity for the Teacher to listen to some students who are quiet. We all know that in group work we have many different opinions and we share our idea, so it is good to have different opinions and then we select the best one. But this will happen only if the Teacher has control over group work, otherwise students may get low grades, they may feel unmotivated to participate, since they were not working, and Teacher as a boss, has to make sure if the students are working and if they are also learning the subject. In this case, Teacher play an important role, that is, make students an active part of the learning experience, by getting students

involved. Sometimes an effective class management depends on students being actively engaged supporting each other in order to exchange their knowledge with one another with the help of the Teacher as well. As I said before the topic of my paper is how to manage group work and I will do the review of the literature on the relationship between interactive activities and group work. I believe that it is important in Cape Verde context, because I have attended many classes and students tend to talk about how was their weekend, what they have done, where they have gone and things like that. Cape Verde needs people who speak English, and they will be able to do it, if the Teachers give them opportunity to practice English. Also, the Teacher has to show the students the importance of English, and one opportunity that students have is by participating in group work. I also realized that Teacher talking time is much more than student, which may be a cause for the students to have a low participation in group work. Another cause that may lead students not to participate well in group work is a certain lack of fun with students. Sometimes they are tired because of many assignments to do, and they need to relax a little. Students need interactive activities instead of just going to the board and give the students informations about the topic. As a result there is a lack of participation in group work, and the Teachers are responsible to struggle with this. For the purpose of this paper I will also do the review of the literature between interactive activities and strategies to manage better group work.

METHODOLOGY For the purpose of this paper I have conducted interviews and observation. Therefore, I analyzed the Teachers methodology, the way he deals to manage group work. After that, as there are a lot of theories about group work, I made my research about the topic in order to get more knowledge on it. To identify the problem I have elaborated an observation grid that includes some of particular behavior. I observed the number of students who raised their hands to answer the questions, the students who initiate the answers, and the numbers that offer to answer. Then I conducted interviews in order to take notes from specific students, such as those who have a high level of participation with the purpose to have more data. It was made in order to compare the data collected during interviews in order to know what the problem of how to manage group work was indeed. The purpose of this was to analyze different group of students. To conduct the interview I made use of 12 questions addressed to the students and 5 to the Teacher. The purpose of the interview was to know students background as school, students knowledge and students ambitions regarding English language, and also to know the Teacher since, I made interview semi-structured them as well. The interview is one of the best ways I choose to collect the data I needed for my project. Although there are answer that subjective from the students.

METHODOLOGY Throughout the development of this paper I have faced many problems, since Academic paper demands a lot from a student. At the very beginning I was nervous, afraid and I remember once I said that I could not do it, because it was too much for me. Then, my whole family supported me by telling me that I was very able to do it. My friends also helped me in this process. I wanted to write about classroom management. I remember a conversation that I had with my supervisor and she suggested me to change the topic to How to Manage Group Work. Another issue that I would like to mention is that I was moved from one class to another during the internship and this led me with stress. However, it was not the end of the world, and I was ready to know the new class. After that I was observing and analyzing the way Teacher deals on the how to manage group work, and also he uses any interactive activities during his classes. I would like to say that, even when I was doing the trainee process I did not receive a single help from our support Teacher, and as a result I was mad, worried angry. I remember once, I had a topic to be taught about Fame VS Success, I was prepared to teach and I was told that I would not teach that day since the Teacher was preparing the students for their final exam. As another consequence the internship was made only from February to June, and we had no time no observe was going on with the students and the Teacher, that is, we did not know them as well as we were supposed to. We were not aware of what were students backgrounds. For it was hard because, I was teaching for the first time in my whole life, but it was also worthy since, I want to be a fluent Teacher with good writing and grammar. When I drew strategies to collect data for my final project, when I was interviewing the students, they were able to answer the questions, but they did it in a hurry, in kriol because they were worried about all the P.G.I exams that they have to do. I took notes while they were answering the questions, and as a result maybe the data that I collected was not that good that clear as I really wanted to, because I tried to write down all the information that they were giving me. In this case time did not help me, but anyway I tried to my best. Seven students were selected to have a conversation with me in order to work on the topic that I selected for my final project. Students asked me why I was asking them all the questions and I told them that I had to because it was my final project, and they decided to answer the questions without problem. I asked them to be honest with me, and they decided to be. To conduct the interview I chose a focus group, but the observation section was made before the

interviews, otherwise it would be a mess. While I was observing I realized that they were three observable behaviors which is related with group work (their participation in class). I was not expecting to observe two different classes of 12 grades, since we were told at the very beginning that we were supposed to observe H1 in February, then I was moved to CT1, and the problem was already identified. I was surprised, but I always believed those who take the lead, if they did so it was necessary. Then I started thinking in a new topic, because the students from H1 were so quiet, my topic was how to motivate them. Students from CT1, on the other hand were motivated, so the topic did not fit. After several observations, I decided with my supervisor that the topic would be a new one. During my internship, I was supported by my support Teacher, but I believe that I deserve much more support that I had received, since I was trainee, I had no experience in teaching so far, and I needed help. Anyway he helped me and I thank him a lot. I remember once I was teaching about Famous People. In that class students were working in group. That class was noisy because students were so excited to talk about Fame VS Success. I remember that during feedback session my Supervisor and support Teacher told me that when a class is noisy, and when students are working in group there are some procedures to be taken: give clear instructions to the students; they have to know what they are going to do and why; give every student a task in each group. I will never forget these instructions. And when I finally start teaching I will apply these informations in order to avoid noisy classes and to manage well group work.

DATA ANALYSIS AND DATA INTERPRETATION Throughout this project I came to a conclusion with the main results that are interesting and vital information for the purpose of this paper. I also would like to add, that when I was doing my observations, I realized some important issues about students lack of discipline when they work in group and also I would like to point out that I had observed a class in which the Teacher used a different technique in order to get all the students involved in the lesson. I saw all the students motivated to participate in class, and even when they were working in group they were quiet. I have realized during my observations that when we give clear instructions to the students, that is, when they know what they are supposed to do, when each student have a task, they stay quiet and all of them participate without making too much noise. During that class even the weakest students raised their hands to participate, and the Teacher gave them the opportunity to speak, and I realized that they were happy. For instance, while we have group work there is no need to listen to the same students over and over again, that is, the strongest ones all the time. Even the weakest ones have the capacity and ability to participate in class, to give their contribution to the class. But, the Teacher needs to use different types of interactive activities in order to make their contribution into account. I became aware during my observations, that the Teacher spends most of the time speaking, that is, giving the students informations and with all that amount of information he had no time to get students knowledge about the topic. It is a fact that he asks the strongest students most of the times and the weakest ones stay quiet most of the times. Besides, it would not be the same if the Teacher cares about students no matter if you are strong or weak. It is a fact that most of the Teachers tend to ask the strongest students to answer the questions, since the weakest ones are quiet most of the times. But all of them can give useful informations for the classes. The Teacher in this process play a very important role, that is, help the weakest students to improve in order for them to have a better level of engagement in the learning process. In the classroom, students who always participate, or have a high level of participation have tried to pay attention during the classes. However, a good strategy is to split the best friends from each other, otherwise they tend to talk with their best friends. The Teacher encouraged the strongest students when they participate in class, by praising them. On the other hand the weakest students do not feel motivated to participate, since they know that the talkative ones would answer the questions. I had the opportunity to interview 7 students, 5 of them participate well, or have a high level of participation, and 2 of them have a high level of participation. After this information, I became

aware that the students who have a low level of participation and those who do not have a high participation in class have not been called, motivated and encouraged by the Teacher to participate in class, whereas, those that have a high level of participation are always called and asked by the Teacher to answer or to participate in class. INTERVIEW WITH THE STUDENTS The following names of the students are the names by which they are called by the Teacher and colleagues
