Vintage Keyboard Collection User Manual

WELCOME
With Scarbee Vintage Keyboard Collection your sound will have the flare that your jeans are missing... Scarbee VKC includes 11 sounds and sample sets of classic vintage keyboards from the 60s and 70s! Scarbee sample libraries are hailed around the world for capturing not only the classic tone of these vintage instruments, but also their 'feel', and the new S.E.P. and F.E.P. are no exceptions. With the S.E.P., Scarbee introduces 'Horizontal Release Technology', whereby release samples are chosen from the wave pool depending on how long a key has been held - allowing a staccato played note to create a different release tone to a note which is sustained for a longer period. To achieve this, each key sampled on the S.E.P. has 24 release samples assigned to it alone! The F.E.P. also makes use of Kontakts advanced triggering options to allow the inclusion of the occasional 'off center' string strike, a well known characteristic of the original instrument. Sampled, mapped and programmed with great love and slavish attention to detail, the Scarbee Vintage Collection presents all of these classic electro mechanical instruments in their ultimate form.

THE SOUNDS

SCARBEE C.E.P. (Classic Electric Piano) - is the sound of a hot-rodded wonderful electric piano from the 70s! C.E.P. has expression and dynamics ranging from warm and mellow, to bright and barking, but can also produce a dulcet bell-like tone very suited to jazz, funk and R&B. How much detail is there in the instrument? To start with, all samples are full length and unlooped. Each of the 73 keys of the original instrument was sampled at 12 different velocities ranging from 0 to -26 dB - but this is only half the story. In order to capture that magical feel of really 'playing' the original instrument, we also recorded 'release' samples for each of the 12 velocities, at the exact same level as the corresponding 12 sustain samples. The release tone - a sound created when a damper bounces against the tine as a key is released, is an intrinsic element of what musicians recognise as the original sound. SCARBEE E.E.P. (Edgy Electric Piano) has a dynamic and versatile sound and tends more towards an 'edgier' sound. Certainly, it can deliver a 'soft and sweet' tone, but its light action allows players to easily deliver a performance with more 'bite'. How much detail is there in the instrument? In order to accurately reproduce the dynamics of the original keyboard, both the sustained and release sounds of each of the 64 keys has been sampled at 16 different velocities resulting in a total pool of over 2000 24 bit wav files. All samples are full length and unlooped and we also recorded 'release' samples for each of the 16 velocities, at the exact same level as the corresponding 16 sustain samples. (except those for the top 5 keys which have no damper, causing the keys to ring out to their end).

THE SOUNDS

SCARBEE S.E.P. (Sticky Electric Piano) has a sound that sonically lies somewhere between the reedy bite of the E.E.P. and the purer bell tone of the C.E.P. The result is a vibraphone type tone with a very percussive envelope and almost no dynamic response due to it's "sticky hammers". How much detail is there in the instrument? Well, this unique keyboard used a special technique to produce its charming sound: so-called sticky hammers made from rubber lifted the tine - more or less like a Harpsicord and when a hammer released its tine, this classic sound was produced. This technique means that the instrument is virtually without dynamics - but even so, its got a really cool sound! Sampling 6 velocities more than covers the pianets dynamic range, but as with the F.E.P., S.E.P. takes advantage of 'Horizontal Release Technology', whereby different release samples are chosen from the wave pool depending on how long a key has been held - allowing a staccato played note to create a different release tone to a note which is sustained for a longer period. Due to the simple mechanical design of the instrument it was only necessary to make 5 release samples per key to obtain a perfect simulation of the original keyboard.

THE SOUNDS

SCARBEE F.E.P. (Funky Electric Piano) has a big round 'twanging' bottom end and a top end which is wiry and tight. For many, this is as close as they will ever get to a sound which could compete with the cut of an electric guitar. In the the sharp tone and percussive playing style made it a first choice for many funk recordings where it complemented funk guitar rhythms like no other instrument. How much detail is there in the instrument? In order to accurately reproduce the original keyboards dynamics, both the sustained and release sounds has been sampled at up to 20 different sustained velocities - including samples of the occasional 'off center' string strike, a well known characteristic of the original instrument. All samples are full length and unlooped and with the F.E.P., Scarbee introduces 'Horizontal Release Technology', whereby release samples are chosen from the wave pool depending on how long a key has been held allowing a staccato played note to create a different release tone to a note which is sustained for a longer period. To achieve this, each key sampled on the F.E.P. has 24 release samples assigned to it alone! This was the only way to reproduce the very special action and soul of the original instrument. We sampled each of the 4 standard pickup settings: CA (Lower Pickup), CB (Upper Pickup), DA (Phase reversed), DB (Both Pickups) - in both a standard version and a version with mutebar switched ON, resulting in 8 unique sounds! We also made it possible to switch Standard/Mute with Mod-Wheel.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Compatibility Obviously, the FULL versions are the most demanding in terms of memory, RAM and CPU requirements, while the LITE versions are a smaller burden on your system. While authenticity, number of samples and quality are different between FULL and LITE, all three versions are fully compatible, i.e. you can replace an FULL version with an LITE version at any time. The sound will retain its character, response and functionality. Original Noise adjustment For each instrument we recorded the original noise before we removed the noise from the samples using clever noise-reduction. We made certain that samples were not degraded in quality after the removing of the noise - not even the highest frequences.

Release samples All the keyboard sounds that comes with VKC uses release samples for ultimate realism. Whereas the key release sound of CEP and EEP is quite conventional: release sound becomes quieter the longer you hold key, the action of SEP and FEP is different and more complex. With these instruments the release sound will be different when holding key for a longer time - on FEP the bass string even reacts completely different than the treble string! So we invented "Horizontal release sample technology" which makes it possible to imitate the action of these keyboards. The result is a very inspiring and authentice playing experience, which we find is very important when creating music. Parameter Noise Level Description Default setting is the exact original level of noise. Noise will play along with other samples when you hit a key and since the noise sample is mapped to 1 note polyphony you always get the same amount of noise whether you play 1 or 30 keys. Feel the magic when you turn down noise to zero!! Here you can adjust the release time of the noise. Default setting is 50. If you want noise to be present the whole time in a song or live you may set it longer.

Noise Release

C.E.P. - the "Classic"sound - EQ Although most owners of the origigal keyboard record their instrument by connecting to the socket on the front panel and set the "Bass Boost" knob in the middle position (actually a bass cut!) - this is what we call the "Classic" sound. Since we decided to record directly from the harp, bypassing the passive tone control on the front panel, in order to capture the full frequency range of the instrument and minimise unwanted noise, we needed to create the "Classic " sound - simulating the behaviour of the passive tone control, by the use of EQ. The precise calculation was done by italian wizard Thomas Serafini.

PROGRAM DETAILS
There are three ways to get this sound using VKC: 1) Buy Scarbee Vintage Keyboard FX and use Preamp. Set Bass in middle position. This is the ideal solution. F.E.P. Pickup Switches On the original instrument you can press 2 switches to filter change the pickup settings. We have sampled each of the 4 standard pickup settings: DB, DA, CB, CA - in both a standard version and a version with mutebar switched ON. F.E.P. Click and Bass Strings adjustment

Only included in Scarbee Keyboard Gold Bundle.

2) Load the "Classic" C.E.P. program and adjust Bass/Treble knob. This is not the exact behaviour. When playing the original instrument with Mutebar ON you get much more clicks on the release of the string - even on a well adjusted instrument. This is probably due to the fact that mutebar presses string a bit closer to the board making the "Escape" shorter. This only affects the thinner Treble strings (from E2 and up). 3) Make EQ setting in Cubase SX or your chosen VST Host. To simulate the "Bass Boost" knob at middle position you need to set a -3.6 bass roll-off at 715 Hz. (Exact calculation) and since the passive tone controls on the real instrument dampens a lot of the high frequences you may want to reduce the "sparkle" to for that duller 'old school' sound. Please feel free to make other EQ settings to suit your own taste! Since the instrument was sampled with new strings for the brightest and most preferred sound there is a significant difference in volume - at least 8 dB - between the hardest velocity of the 3 bass strings (F0-D#2) and the much thinner treble string. In real life you adjust you playing style so left hand plays softer, but it has often been a wish among musicians to be able to adjust the volume of the bass strings. This is now possible.

In Cubase SX open the mixer and locate VKC. Set the bass EQ (lowest - "active" icon is green) to 715 Hz and dB to -3.6. For that "Old school" sound - set the treble EQ (top - "active" icon is green) to 2500 Hz and dB to -24.

PROGRAM DETAILS
Parameter Click Level Description Default is original level of "click" - you can turn it complitely off if you prefer a cleaner sound. Since it is a special set of samples the rest of sound will not be influenced by this adjustment. Here you can adjust the volume of the bass strings (F0-D#2). Don't turn it completely down as the releative levels of all velocities then will be "flattened out" and have same velocity - which isn't good at all. A level between -0 dB to -5 dB should work fine for most players.. F.E.P. Mutebar To the right of the keys on the original instrument you have a Mutebar. By pressing it full up sound will be muted. We recorded all sounds with Mutebar on and with the "X" programs you can switch between normal and muted sound using the Mod-Wheel. S.E.P. Release Sound adjustment

BassStr Level

F.E.P. 'off center' string strike Musicians who have played the real instrument probably remembers the occasional 'off center' string strike, a well known characteristic of the original instrument. We have included that too and programmed it to appear as often as the original instrument. And since we didn't use random "round-robin" features, but instead mapped it to particular velocities it IS possible to edit the sound away - if you think your track wasn't perfect F.E.P. 'pitch bend" If you press a key harder on the original instrument, the note will pitch slightly. We have recreated this to be controlled with aftertouch. We also made it possible to use normal pitchbend. F.E.P. Filter Switches On the original instrument you can press 4 switches to filter out different frequences. This is a complicated behaviour that can not be reproduced using normal EQ's. So we decided to create a special FX plugin that comes with the Vintage Keyboard FX and Keyboard Gold Bundle packages.

The original instrument used a special technique to produce it's charming sound - so called "Sticky hammers" (rubber) sucked the tine, more or less like a Harpsicord and when hammer lifted from the tine the sound was produced. This means that the instrument is virtually without dynamics - but a cool sound indeed! However the release sound could be annoying for some since it almost sounds as "clicks". Therefore we decided to add an option for S.E.P. to turn down for the click - but offcourse we recommend keeping it natural as it adds charm to the sound. Parameter Rel Level Description Here you can adjust the release sound volume until you feel comfortable!

S.E.P. & W.E.P Vibrato We have recreated the Vibrato amount and speed of the original instruments and mapped Mod-Wheel to control this. You can then adjust the amount of the vibrato by turning Mod-Wheel up. Notice that on the S.E.P. there was just one setting which is around Mod-Wheel value 64 (middle).

Only included in Scarbee Keyboard Gold Bundle.

THE BETA TEST TEAM

The Scarbee C.E.P. would never have been the same without my 12 beta testers! They were all great! Lars helped me out on the E.E.P. too and Christian Vinten was a most important voice of both E.E.P and especially F.E.P. - as he is a wizard on this funky keyboard - and happens to be the owner the instrument I sampled! Christian Vinten, Jules Bromley, Ian Stewart Cairns, Rick Chadwick, David Govett, Didier Icart, Nick Manson, Lennie Moore, Alfonso de Prisco, Thomas Serafini, Justin Schwinghamer, Lars Daniel Terkelsen, Larry Thompson, Stefan Kengen Apart from playing and testing the C.E.P. some of the guys made cool demoes for internal use (testing sound) or for official demoing: Lars, Lennie, Nick, Didier, Ian and off course Christian. Lennie was the chief in the C.E.P. tuning department - he borrowed a Peterson Strobe Tuner from Eric Percing (Thanks!) and did the Stretch tuned versions too. Chadwick did a scaring list of all timbre-fixes - ouch! He really made me work hard for many days... Lars - who is the owner of the instrument we sample for C.E.P. was off course an expert in the sound and feel - he was really satisfied when we did the "Old School sound!! Phew! Initially I had borrowed his favourite keyboard for two weeks - nine months later it was still in my house! (Sorry) Thomas Serafini. did the calculations on the "Classic sound" EQ and he and Alfonso de Prisco worked on some new secret Scarbee stuff ...
