Educational Aims
The aims of this topic are to enable students to:

l act as a therapeutic practitioner

l apply infection control practices and risk management strategies to the care of patients with a variety of
illnesses in the stable/unstable illness trajectory across the life span

l apply the concepts of prevention, primary health care and community care to the care of patients with a
variety of illnesses in the stable/unstable illness trajectory across the lifespan

l understand the nature of illness, chronicity and its self-management by patients

l understand how pain is assessed and managed across a variety of illnesses in the stable/unstable illness
trajectory across the lifespan

l understand how wounds are assessed and managed

l further develop their understanding of continuity of care and discharge planning required for a patient with a
variety of illnesses in the stable/unstable illness trajectory across the lifespan

l understand and develop strategies required for assessing and supplying education to a patient across a
variety of illnesses in the stable/unstable illness trajectory across the lifespan

l further develop health assessment skills required for caring for people with a range of illnesses in the
stable/unstable trajectory across the lifespan

l more deeply understand their professional role within the health team when working within the clinical
setting

l apply clinical reasoning when caring for clients with a range of illnesses in the stable/unstable illness
trajectory across the lifespan

l understand the particular care needs of the elderly.

On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

l demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice taking into account the context of care

l provide evidence for and demonstrate responsibility and accountability for their nursing care

l apply the process of clinical reasoning to the care of patients with a variety of illnesses in the stable/unstable
illness trajectory

l analyse the need and the provision of continuity of care in relation to a range of diseases in the
stable/unstable illness trajectory across the lifespan

l demonstrate health assessment skills for patients with a variety of illnesses in a range of diseases across
the lifespan

l perform a range of therapeutic interventions/processes accompanied by adequate justification

l apply time management principles to the planning and implementation of nursing care for a range of patients

l evaluate their nursing care using an evidence-based practice process

l design and implement a teaching session for a patient and their family

l explain the nursing implications of prescribed medication for patients in their care

l produce accurate, precise, meaningful, legal and comprehensive nursing documentation using an accepted
framework

l analyse the particular care needs of the elderly based on physiological psychological changes in the aged

l apply and integrate nursing inquiry, pharmacological and pathophysiological principles to their nursing care.
Syllabus
This topic uses frameworks of health assessment, illness trajectories and continuity of care to consider the nursing
care needs of people at different stages of the lifespan, with a particular emphasis on the elderly. Students will
continue to develop nursing competencies in the nursing laboratories and on clinical placement. There will be a focus
on wound and pain management, risk assessment and infection control and patient education. Clinical reasoning and
reflective practice skills will continue to be developed.
