Historic Perspective

At the end of XIX century B.L.Yavorsky established the link between the vocal side of the verbal speech and expressiveness in music. Investigations led the scientist to revealing the concept of intonation. It is precisely the intonation i.e. the vocal side of the verbal speech that is the main decisive factor of its expressiveness.

What is

INTONATION?

Hearing is guided by the presence or absence of the intonation of rising and lowering, increase and decrease, quickening and drawling, joining and dividing, respites and stoppages.

Hearing defines mood or the general contents of the conversation Performance of the same dramatic play by different actors produces different impression solely due to reproduction of the words of this work in spite of the appearance of the actors, their mimic and plastic acting. And even separate persons posses the ability to pronounce one and the same word repeatedly giving it another expression

When

we listen to the conversation in the language unknown to us we, being unable to define the subject of the conversation, often guess about the mood, the contents of the conversation itself.

When

we hear the sounds of the human speech behind the wall or hereabout we, failing to make out words, always define faultlessly define whether it is conversation, narration or reading aloud.

Voice Tells a Story

With all the hype surrounding convergence, content, mobility, and multimodality, the single most powerful application that unifies and clarifies all forms of communications is the sound of the human voice.

Paralinguistic

Intonations Stress Pause

paralanguage

We convey feelings, moods and attitudes through a variety of voice qualities, which are sometimes called paralanguage. Among these qualities are volume, pace, intonation, stress and juncture.

Volume and Pace

Volume and pace should be used in a careful, controlled way. You can let your voice rise to a crescendo, the pace and volume quickening until you reach a peak of excitement. Or you can drop to a dramatic whisper.

Stress

Stress is another important element of paralanguage. The way you emphasize words can change the meaning of your sentences. As you speak, be conscious of the effects of sense stress on the meaning you're trying to convey. Use stress to help your listener understand the sense in which you use words and to show which words you consider to be important

Pause

Can change the entire meaning of your conversation Right pauses.for the right period It helps the message to sink in

Voice is the first choice and provides an intimate sense of connection

human voice intonations assign a specific meaning to our speech

For example, voice can relay concern from a grandparent or express the joy of a newfound relationship that goes beyond the meaning of the words used in the conversation.

Very important in todays business communication

Every voice tells a story It reveals the personality, it may reveal what one wants to concealalso reveal what u want to reveal but without saying it!

Voice Related to Body Language

A voice naturally comes out with a strong emotion . Through experiences, people could guess a situation through an emotional voice. Because of the nature, some elemental vocal sounds might psychologically effect to common feelings, just like colors do.

A voice can be sent in the darkness or an invisible situation Making a voice/sound for getting other's attentions or warning had to be important to survive for people

Voice can make rhythm related to time. This nature of voice has been useful for conducting a group to do something together such as carrying heavy things, pounding rice, rowing a boat etc.; this had to be very important to build cooperation.

These kinds of vocal traditions are handed down for a long time as local calls/labor songs, easing each individual heart by the long term links.

The voice tells the real story!!!

Voice cannot be

Seen Held It just fades away.. It has a very very short life span. Unlike written words which can be reviewed

Vocal expressions are alive!

Strictly speaking, a vocal language changes the expression for each time with the emotional background, also words and the system change in time influenced by other cultures. Because of this changeable nature, vocal languages are alive and attractive, creating dialects and slang terms easily.

And finally

When you speak, your voice speaks in ways that go far beyond the words themselves. A variety of voice qualities convey feeling, moods and attitudes.

When George Bush ran for president in 1988, he hired a voice coach to help him lower his voice an octave. Why? Because the candidate's highpitched voice had helped saddle him with the "wimp" image, even though Bush had proved his valor as a Navy combat pilot during World War II.
